    Notes: The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio is enhanced by 35% by inserting the nano-oxide layer (NOL) at the Ta/Co interface in the FeMn-based top spin valves (Ta/NOL/Co/Cu/Co/FeMn/Ta). The enhancement is attributed to specular reflection, resulting in a large resistance change and small sheet resistance. However, the formation of NOL at the interface of Ta/Co suppresses the (111) texture, resulting in small exchange fields. Top spin valves with NOLs show good thermal stability up to 200 °C annealing. The MR ratio is further increased after annealing at temperatures below 200 °C. Enhancement of the MR ratio by 61% can be achieved by annealing at 150 °C. For bottom spin valves (Ta/NiFe/FeMn/Co/Cu/NiFe/Ta), NOLs formed at FeMn/Co and NiFe/Ta interfaces increase MR ratios, but NOLs at Co/Cu or Cu/NiFe deteriorate the differential spin scattering and significantly reduce MR ratios. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A rf-driven discharge is used to produce a beam of metastable krypton atoms at the 5s(3/2)2 level with an angular flux density of 4×1014 s−1 sr−1 and most probable velocity of 290 m/s, while consuming 7×1016 krypton atoms/s. When operated in a gas-recirculation mode, the source consumes 2×1015 krypton atoms/s with the same atomic-beam output. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper presents new findings on ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of zirconium hydroxyl acetate precursor drops whose sizes were precisely measured using laser light diffraction technique. Precursor concentration plays a predominant role in determination of product particle size. At 0.01 wt% precursor concentration, conventional spray pyrolysis at 750°C using precursor drops 5–8 μm in diameter, generated by an ultrasonic nebulizer at 2.66 MHz, yielded uniform spherical yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) particles 73 nm in diameter measured by scanning electron microscopy. The YSZ particle diameters were much smaller than those predicted by the one-particle-per-drop mechanism. Under similar reaction conditions, the high-throughput ultrasound-modulated two-fluid (UMTF) spray pyrolysis of larger precursor drops (28-μm peak diameter) also yielded spherical dense particles; they were significantly smaller in size than those produced by the low-throughput conventional ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of smaller drops (6.8-μm peak diameter).

    Notes: An efficient and morphologically stable pyrimidine-containing spirobifluorene-cored oligoaryl, 2,7-bis[2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)pyrimidine-5-yl]-9,9′-spirobifluorene (TBPSF), as an emitter or a host for blue organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), is reported. The steric hindrance inherent with the molecular structure renders the material a record-high neat-film photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 80% as a pure blue emitter (PL peak at 430 nm) of low molecular weight, and a very high glass-transition temperature (Tg) of 195 °C. Blue OLEDs employing this compound as the emitter or the emitting host exhibit unusual endurance for high currents over 5000 mA/cm2. When TBPSF is used as a host for perylene in a blue OLED, maximal brightness of ∼80 000 cd/m2 had been achieved, representing the highest values reported for blue OLEDs under dc driving. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High dielectric CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) thin films were epitaxially grown on (001) LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Microstructural studies by x-ray diffraction, pole figure measurements, and transmission electron microscopy show that the as-grown films are good single crystalline quality with an interface relationship of (001)CCTO//(001)LAO and [100]CCTO//[100]LAO. Dielectric property measurements show that the films have an extremely high dielectric constant with value of 10 000 at 1 MHz at room temperature. It is interesting to note that the twinned substrate results in the formation of twinning or dislocations inside the CCTO film. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Carbon nanotips with a high-aspect ratio were directly grown on Pt films. Carbon nanotips grew up to 5.4 μm length and 64 nm diameter under a −120 V bias. Compared to the hollow structure of carbon nanotubes, transmission electron microscopy images indicate its solid body, which is made of graphite. Carbon nanotips possess good field emission characteristics, that is, a turn-on field of 1.5 V/μm and 761 μA/cm2 under 2.2 V/μm. The Pt films provide a good conduction path for electron transport from the cathode to the emission site and do not act as catalysts. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Vertically well-aligned, high-aspect-ratio carbon nanotips have been directly grown upward on the gated device structure with 4 μm gate aperture. The nanotips rapidly nucleate and grow without any catalyst. In addition, selected area deposition of nanotips is achieved by using a Pt layer as inhibitor in the bias-assisted microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition. The field emission current of nanotips on the gated structure is 154 μA (at a gate-to-cathode voltage of Vgc=50 V). This results from the following reasons: (i) short gate-tips spacing, (ii) small gate aperture, and (iii) the high-aspect ratio of nanotips. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: When a magnetic fluid thin film is subjected to a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the film, a portion of magnetic particles is condensed out from the initially monodispersed magnetic fluid and forms magnetic columns. These columns evolve from a disordered column phase to a two-dimensional ordered structural pattern as the field strength reaches some critical value, Hh. The structural pattern formative process of the ordered structures that follows depends on the condition of the disordered column phase. In the letter, the effect of the initial disordered column phase, which can be altered by changing the initial field strength, Hi, on the formative process of the ordered structures is studied, and a phase diagram on the H–Hi plane is constructed. With an initial field strength that exceeds Hh, the structural pattern formative process goes through a plateau, a transition phase, and another plateau. On the other hand, if the initial field strength is less than Hh, the columns in the disordered column phase split and new columns emerge in the magnetic fluid film as the field strength increases. Finally, the structural pattern reaches a plateau. In both processes, the distance between columns in the structural patterns converges to that of a pseudostatic case. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Optical properties of GaN/Al0.2Ga0.8N superlattices have been investigated by Raman scattering and photoluminescence measurements. It is found that the A1(LO) phonon decreases in frequency with decreasing quantum-well width. The frequency shift is attributed to the effect of phonon zone folding. Through the study of photoluminescence, we show that our observation of the zone-folding effect on optical phonon in GaN/Al0.2Ga0.8N superlattices is due to the sharpness of the interfaces between barrier and well layers. The sharp interfaces prevent the appearance of mixed interface modes which mask the phonon effect of zone folding in previous reports. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A multicolor infrared photodetector was realized with two superlattices separated by a blocking barrier. The photoresponse is switchable between 7.5–12 and 6–8.5 μm by the bias polarity, and is also tunable by the bias magnitude in each wavelength regime. In addition, our detector exhibits advantages including little temperature dependence of the spectral response and the same order of responsivity in the two wavelength regimes. The measured peak responsivities in the two regimes are 117 mA/W at 9.8 μm under 1 V and 129 mA/V at 7.4 μm under −0.8 V, respectively. Also, the detectivities are comparable with the conventional multistack detector. The zero background peak detectivities are 2.3×1010 cm Hz0.5/W at 50 K and 9.8 μm under 0.7 V, and 8.7×1010 cm Hz0.5/W at 70 K and 7.4 μm under −0.7 V. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
