Notes: Summary We report a 7-month-old boy who developed vesicular lesions during the course of exanthem subitum. Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) DNA was detected both in the skin lesions and in the throat, by polymerase chain reaction. IgG and IgM antibodies against HHV-6 were 1:10 and 〈1:10, respectively on the tenth day of the illness, and 〉1:640 and 1:10 on the twenty-second day, respectively. These results suggest that this was primary HHV-6 infection.

Notes: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of vegetable oligopeptides on the reduction of blood ethanol. Studies were done after intragastric ethanol intake of 1 g/kg body weight ethanol in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. Intragastric administered corn peptide caused a significant attenuation of the increase in blood ethanol levels. However, pea peptide did not influence blood ethanol levels. Pea peptide has a similar molecular weight as corn peptide. In the plasma, alanine, branched-chain amino acids, and proline concentrations were significantly elevated by the administrations of all oligopeptides as compared to the control group, but the leucine level was elevated more so by the corn peptide compared to wheat peptide or pea peptide. Consequently, these results suggested that corn peptide may lower the increase in blood ethanol levels after ethanol intake by the marked elevation of plasma alanine and leucine, especially leucine.

Notes: The co-aggregation characteristics between Fusobacterium nucleatum and streptococci were examined to clarify the adherence factors participating in the co-aggregation. Nineteen strains of F. nucleatum were classified into 8 groups according to co-aggregation titer and inhibition by L-arginine, L-lysine and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine (or lactose). The inhibition activity was, however, very different from strain to strain. With two fusobacterial strains, two inhibitors, which were both inhibition negative on their own, completely inhibited the co-aggregation when used together in a mixture. In some co-aggregation pairs, the protease treatment of F. nucleatum inactivated one of the adherence factors, and resulted in the change of inhibition characteristics. These results indicate the multimodal co-aggregation of F. nucleatum with streptococci mediated by L-arginine-sensitive, L-lysine-sensitive, N-acetyl-D-galactosamine-sensitive and some resistant factors, and that the adherence factor or factors participating in the co-aggregation change according to the co-aggregation partners.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary From the studies presented here it seems justified to regard some of the systemic effects of burns to be of immunopathologic nature. After cutaneous burns antibodies may be detected serologically which are directed especially against the walls of small blood vessels; in well vascularized organs (kidneys, lungs), these antibodies may produce injury independent of shock. These considerations of the immunopathologic nature of the post-burn illness represent only a part of the entire problem of immunopathology which to date remains incompletely understood. The immunopathologic results presented here, however, do not permit one to advocate using convalescent serum from burned patients for the immune therapy of the post-burn illness.

Notes: Abstract The wild-type p53 gene suppresses cell proliferation and induces apoptosis when it is transfected into human colon cancer cell lines. Therefore, mutation of the p53 gene, which correlates closely with p53 protein overexpression, would be predicted to activate cell proliferation and limit apoptosis. We tested this hypothesis by correlating p53 protein expression with cell proliferation and apoptosis in 70 neoplasms (29 adenomas and 41 carcinomas) using p53 and Ki-67 immunohistochemical staining and DNA nick end labelling. The p53 immunoreactivity was independent of the Ki-67 positivity. The apoptotic incidence was less frequent (P〈0.005) in tumours with diffuse p53 protein overexpression than in those with the sporadic overexpression, defined as p53 staining of isolated or scattered expression. In addition, apoptotic incidence only correlated directly (P〈0.05) with Ki-67 positivity in tumours with sporadic p53-protein expression. These results indicate that p53 protein that is expressed sporadically in colorectal neoplasms is probably wild-type protein and induces apoptosis in response to active cell proliferation. In contrast, diffusely overexpressed p53 protein in colorectal neoplasms is probably mutant and correlates with a reduction in apoptotic cell death independently of cell proliferation.

Notes: Abstract We report a dural arteriovenous shunt on the superior petrosal sinus at the origin of the petrosal vein, and its treatment. This is the first report of transvenous embolisation of such a shunt through the contralateral occipital and transverse sinuses. It was possible to achieve complete obliteration of the superior petrosal sinus shunt by coils and polyvinyl acetate liquid embolisation, in a combined venous and arterial approach.

Notes: Abstract To elucidate the signal transduction system in the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by porcine tracheal smooth muscle cells in culture (PTSMC), we examined the pattern of arachidonic acid metabolites released from PTSMC and the relationship between bradykinin-stimulated rises in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) and PGE2 production by PTSMC. We next examined the effect of dexamethasone on these parameters. Bradykinin induced a dose-dependent increase in both the rise in [Ca2+]i and PGE2 production by PTSMC. The increase in [Ca2+]i paralleled an increase in PGE2 production. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) revealed that dexamethasone-treated PTSMC were suppressed to release arachidonic acid metabolites such as PGE2 and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). Incubation of PTSMC with 10−6M dexamethasone for 24 h significantly suppressed both the rise in [Ca2+]i and PGE2 production by PTSMC in response to bradykinin, and also significantly suppressed bradykinin-stimulated release of radioactivity from PTSMC prelabeled with 3H-labeled arachidonic acid (3H-AA). When PTSMC pretreated with dexamethasone were incubated with 170 nM prostaglandin H2 (PGH2) or 20 μM arachidonic acid; PTSMC synthesized less PGE2 than control PTSMC. Results suggest that bradykinin stimulates PTSMC to produce PGE2 via the signal transduction system including Ca2+, and dexamethasone appeared to suppress PGE2 production by reducing the activity of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) and PGE2 synthase. However, we failed to demonstrate the suppression of the activity of cyclooxygenase in PTSMC by dexamethasone. Since the elevation of [Ca2+]i is necessary for the contraction of airway smooth muscles, dexamethasone seems to reduce the contraction of airway.
