Notes: Abstract  We report a case of refractory anemia with excess of blasts in transformation with the translocation (8; 21), which is frequent in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) but not in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Bone marrow blasts were 1.6% and an extensive myeloid differentiation was noted. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis revealed the presence of 21q22 translocations in mature neutrophils, indicating that clonogenic blast progenitors could actively undergo terminal differentiation to mature end cells in vivo. We consider that t(8; 21)+ MDS may represent a rare clinical manifestation of M2-AML, in which blast progenitors have an extensive differentiation potential to mature neutrophils without maturation arrests.

Notes: Abstract A hairy root clone (M8) of Atropa belladonna, producing high levels of tropane alkaloids, was established by transformation with Agrobacterium rhizogenes (MAFF 03-01724). Littorine, an intermediate of tropane alkaloids, was detected by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the alkaloid fraction of the hairy roots and identified by nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Littorine was also detected in the non-transformed root culture of A. belladonna.

Notes: Abstract Interaction between laser light and a micrometer-size spherical particle causes an optical resonance in its interior since a spherical wall acts as a cavity. The present work seeks to investigate the preparation of organic-inorganic particles containing laser dyes and demonstrate their lasing behavior. Rhodamine 6G was incorporated into organic-inorganic spherical particles of micrometer-size using sol-gel technique. Phenyl triethoxy silane was used as a starting material for particles. Particle size was 1–10 μm and dye content was 1–7 × 10-5 mol/g. A particle was set on a glass plate in air and pumped by a second harmonic pulse of Q-switched Nd-YAG laser (532 nm wavelength). From a particle of 6 μm in diameter, a strong laser emission peak was observed at 598 nm wavelength which corresponded to the whispering-gallery mode resonance.

Notes: Abstract Hairy roots of Coleus forskohlii were induced by infection with the Agrobacterium rhizogenes MAFF 03-01724 strain. Growth and forskolin production of two hairy root clones cultured in various liquid media were examined. Hairy root clone B9 grew well in woody plant liquid medium and showed a high forskolin yield (ca. 1.3 mg/ 100 ml flask) after 5 weeks of culture. The time course of growth and forskolin production of the clone B9 cultured in woody plant liquid medium was also examined. Rapid growth started at week 2 and continued until week 5. The highest forskolin yield (ca. 1.6 mg/100 ml flask) was obtained at week 5. Productivity was much higher than that previously reported.
