    Notes: A mass spectrometer beam system using a double focusing sector analyzer and an electron impact ion source has been developed for trace analysis. The molecular beam, formed through a focusing glass capillary array, serves as the gas inlet of the system. Closed cycle cryopumps and ion pumps are used to generate the high vacuum. System roughing is achieved using sorption pumps. Clean and oil free vacuum was obtained by nonmechanical pumping. System normal mode sensitivity is about 107 counts/s/Torr. System low pressure mode sensitivity can be three orders of magnitude higher when sample pressures are below 30 mTorr. A parts-per-billion range system detection capability was accomplished. Slow response time for adsorptive species measurements is a major drawback of the sample inlet system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ohmic contacts to heavily C-doped AlGaAs were made using PdGeTiPt that had specific contact resistances Rc, as low as 1.7×10−6 Ω cm2 when annealed at 600 °C. The less heavily doped samples annealed at temperatures between 350 and 500 °C were non-Ohmic, and Rc decreased with increasing annealing temperature between 500 and 600 °C. For the more heavily doped samples, Rc decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Rc increased for all samples at annealing temperatures above 600 °C. Rc rose quickly by 102 when the samples were reannealed at 300 °C for 20 h, but remained unchanged with further reannealing for up to 100 h. This behavior is consistent with partial compensation generated by the rapid out-diffusion of Ga at low annealing temperatures and the subsequent in-diffusion of Ge into the Ga vacancies left behind. The lower Rc obtained with the 600 °C anneal can be explained by an increased As out-diffusion and the subsequent in-diffusion of Ge into the As vacancies at the higher annealing temperatures. Interfacial reactions and elemental diffusion of the contacts investigated via transmission electron microscopy and elemental depth profiles obtained by Auger electron spectroscopy are also consistent with this mode. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the present study, we performed the retrograde tracing method using the neurotropic pseudorabies virus bartha strain (PRV-Ba) and immunohistochemistry against CGRP, to identify whether CGRP exists in the gastric monosynaptic vagal circuit between dorsal motor nucleus of vagus nerve (DMV) and nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS).At the results, PRV immunoreactive neurons were found in both DMV and NTS. However, CGRP-immunoreactive cells were present only in NTS, which contained no double-labeled neurons for PRV and CGRP.These results suggest that CGRP may not have a neuronal function in gastric vagal circuit of rat.

    Notes: We employed the retrograde neural tracing method using the pseudorabies virus bartha strain (PRV-Ba) to investigate the projection from accessory trigeminal nucleus (Acc5) or accessary facial nucleus (Acc7) to hypoglossal nucleus (HP). After injection of PRV-Ba into the bellies of the digastric muscle, the PRV-Ba containing neurones were observed in Acc5 of the cranial belly injected rats and Acc7 of caudal belly injected rats ipsilaterally, but not in HP. These results suggest that Acc5 and Acc7 may not project to HP and that movements of the digastric muscle are not related to cooperation with tongue movements during mastication.

    Notes: Pericellular arborization is reported to be the self-regulating structure in sensory ganglia. Although the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or substance P (SP) immunoreactive pericellular arborization appeared in the sensory ganglia, there was no available information that CGRP and SP colocalize in this structure. As the attempts to resolve the question described above, the present study was undertaken to identify the coexistence of CGRP and SP in pericellular arborizations of the goat nodose and trigeminal ganglia by double immunohistochemistry. As the results show, CGRP immunoreactivity was present in every pericellular arborization containing SP immunoreactivity in trigeminal ganglia, however, pericellular network containing CGRP or SP immunoreactivity was not present in nodose ganglia. Unexpectedly, a few small satellite elements were observed to contain intense CGRP and SP immunoreactivity at the periphery of CGRP and SP immunoreactive neurones in nodose ganglia. Therefore, these results suggest that CGRP and SP coexsit in pericellular arborizations, and that satellite cell as well as pericellular arborization may be involved in intraganglionic regulation of goat sensory ganglia.

    Notes: In the skull of the Korean native goat, the parietal region was classified into four types by the degree of the fusion of the bones, the os interparietale, the os parietale and the squama occipitalis of the os occipitale, and the structural variations of these fusions. The fusion appeared first in the sutura inter-parietoparietalis and that of the sutura sagittalis of both ossa parietalia was followed. There was no fusion between the os parietale and the squama occipitalis of the os occipitale. These results suggest that the os interparietale developed independently but fused to the os parietale after birth, and the os parietale were developed as paired bones in prenatal life and then fused together according to age.

    Notes: Abstract. A mistletoe lectin was isolated from water extracts of Korean mistletoe, a subspecies of Viscum album, grown on Quercus mongolica using CM-Sepharose chromatography followed by an affinity chromatography on a concanavalin A-Sepharose column. The compound proved to be a mistletoe lectin II with D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine specificity. Matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectroscopy showed it to have an average molecular mass of 62.7 kDa and to consist of two subunits of 30.6 kDa and 32.5 kDa. It was a basic protein with isoelectric points of 9.4 and 9.6 by capillary isoelectric focusing and was cytotoxic to Molt4 cell.

    Notes: Abstract: Location of the bladder neck and its dynamic motion are believed to be influenced by body position. This study was designed to evaluate factors affecting bladder neck mobility in both supine and standing positions. The parameters of 75 GSI patients and 49 controls were compared by Student’s t-test. Receiver operating characteristic curves and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the effects of potential contributing factors on bladder neck mobility. We were unable to find any significant correlation between bladder neck hypermobility and GSI. We also failed to demonstrate that bladder neck hypermobility in the supine or standing position relative to previous believed risk factors, including parity, vaginal delivery, menopause, cystocele, rectocele, uterine prolapse or body mass index. In order to elucidate the pathophysiology of bladder neck mobility clearly, changes in intra-abdominal pressure and gravitational direction in different positions should be evaluated carefully and scientifically in further studies.

    Impact of physical initialization on cloud forecasts (1995)

    Notes: Summary The impact of initial data on cloud forecasts by the Florida State University Global Spectral Model (FSUGSM) has been investigated. This work has shown that improving the information content of the initial data by physical initialization has a very strong, positive impact on cloud forecasts. Model spin-up of clouds is considerably reduced. There is an overall better representation of high, middle, low, and total clouds over the tropics and there is a discernible improvement in the prediction of clouds. A strong correlation between cloud shortwave forcing and longwave forcing has been noted in model forecasts with the physically initialized data. This result compares very well with observations from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE).

    Notes: Abstract To produce a large quantity of the angiotensin-converting-enzyme(ACE)-inhibiting peptide YG-1, which consists of ten amino acids derived from yeast glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, a high-level expression was explored with tandem multimers of the YG-1 gene in Escherichia coli. The genes encoding YG-1 were tandemly multimerized to 9-mers, 18-mers and 27-mers, in which each of the repeating units in the tandem multimers was connected to the neighboring genes by a DNA linker encoding Pro-Gly-Arg for the cleavage of multimers by clostripain. The multimers were cloned into the expression vector pET-21b, and expressed in E. coli BL21(DE3) with isopropyl β-d-thiogalactopyranoside induction. The expressed multimeric peptides encoded by the 9-mer, 18-mer and 27-mer accumulated intracellularly as inclusion bodies and comprised about 67%, 25% and 15% of the total proteins in E. coli respectively. The multimeric peptides expressed as inclusion bodies were cleaved with clostripain, and active monomers were purified to homogeneity by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. In total, 105 mg pure recombinant YG-1 was obtained from 1 l E. coli culture harboring pETYG9, which contained the 9-mer of the YG-1 gene. The recombinant YG-1 was identical to the natural YG-1 in molecular mass, amino acid sequence and ACE-inhibiting activity.
