Notes: Ion vibration gives rise to a new pulsing dipole moment which affects the long-range interaction with the target molecule. This pulsing long-range interaction mechanism has been applied to the proton-transfer reaction NH+3(ν)+NH3→NH2+NH+4 in which the vibrational mode-specific depression of the reaction rate is observed. Significance of the vibrationally induced dipole moment of NH+3(ν) has been clarified in such a way that the origin of the depression is ascribed to the interaction of this pulsing dipole moment with the permanent dipole moment of NH3. The results of calculation agree qualitatively well with the experimental result [Chupka and Russell, J. Chem. Phys. 48, 1527 (1968)].

Notes: A dry surface passivation of GaAs using the combination of H2S gas with an ArF excimer laser was examined. Native oxides at the surface were etched away by laser irradiation in vacuum. By subsequent laser irradiation in a H2S gas ambient, the surface was covered with sulfur atoms. The dry passivation technique in this study is comparable to the wet passivation process using (NH4)2Sx treatment in terms of the sulfur coverage ratio.

Notes: The atomic structure of (001) surfaces of c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) thin films was studied by low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) after annealing in ultrahigh vacuum. This is the first report on the surface analysis of superconducting oxide evaluated by ISS. A clean surface of YBCO (001) 1×1 is produced by annealing at around 500 °C. The surface structure is discussed in terms of the blocking and the nonblocking effects caused by the desorption of O(4) atoms. We conclude that the (001) surfaces are stabilized by Cu(1)-O chains.

Notes: Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) are the most numerous cell population among the cellular infiltrates in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and play important roles in the host-defensive system in the gingival crevices. We determined the percentage of neutrophils, cosinophils and basophils in total PMNLs by light microscopic observation using Randolph-methylene blue staining, then assessed flow cytometric differences in the expression of CR3, FcγRIII, FcɛRII. LFA-1α, and LFA-Iβ on PMNL in GCF and peripheral blood (PB) from 21 patients with adult periodontius (AP) and 13 healthy donors. Percentages of basophils and eosinophils were higher in GCF than in PB. In both AP patients and healthy subjects, expression of CR3 and FcɛRll was higher while FeγRIII was lower in GCF than in PB. The statistical analysis showed that the expressions of FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs were lower in AP patients than in healthy subjects. Expressions of LFA-1α and β on GCF were similar to those on PB PMNLs. PB PMNLs stimulated in vitro with Porphyromonas gingivalts culture supernatant and fMLP displayed an expression pattern of CR3, FcγRIII and FcɛRII on GCF PMNLs. However, C5a and IL-I failed to induce changes in FcγRIII and FcɛRII. The results indicate that GCF neutrophils are activated, present enhanced adhesion and a decreased IgG-binding ability which would reflect that they are at the terminal stage of activation, and that GCF contains a larger eosinophil fraction than in PB. Moreover, these GCF eosinophils appear to be activated.

Notes: Mucosal blood flow in the human palate was measured by a temperature controlled thermoelectrical method based on the thermal conductivity of mucosal tissue using a blood flow monitor and a non-invasive surface probe. The effect of mechanical pressure on the palatal mucosal tissue was studied. Mechanical pressure (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 or 15.0g mm−2) to the mucosal surface was exerted circumferentially around the surface probe. In five out of seven subjects, the blood flow showed a tendency to be almost constant under the mechanical pressures which are 10.0g mm−2 or higher. The effect of the duration of the pressure (10.0g mm−2) exertion on the blood flow was also investigated and it was revealed that the blood flow tended to be constant after 60s in every subject. In the present study, it was also demonstrated that the temperature controlled thermoelectrical method is appropriate for studying the blood flow dynamics in oral mucosa.

Notes: Abstract The role of hydrogen in carbon deposition on Ni has been studied at H2/CO 〈 1 and 698 K by determining the respective rates of the carbon-forming reactions: (1) CO + H2 →-C + H2O and (2) 2CO → C + CO2. The steady-state rate of reaction (1) increases in proportion to H2 pressure. On the other hand, reaction (2) is facilitated by the addition of an extremely small amount of H2, so that the rate becomes about eight times that for pure CO but hardly varies as more H2 is added. Similarly, there is a great difference in catalytic activity for ethylene hydrogenation between spent catalysts obtained in the deposition with and without H2. These findings suggest that hydrogen, even in a small amount, makes free Ni surface area larger than for pure CO.

Notes: Abstract Effective acid sites for the dehydration of 2-propanol and isomerization of 1-butene were found to be generated by glass formation of calcium metaphosphate. The number of these sites with strong acidity remarkably decreased by the crystallization of the glass, where the condensation of hydroxyl groups were significant. Thus, the sites must be the monohydrogen phosphate protons.

Notes: Summary The need for reproducibility in the classification of acute leukaemia has made it necessary to incorporate information derived from new techniques which have become essential for the study of these disorders. In addition to classic morphology and cytochemistry (FAB proposals), it is necessary to add immunology and cytogenetics (MIC proposals), as well as to investigate further the biological and diagnostic significance of molecular events. As a result of these investigations a new group of leukaemias merit recognition as distinct entities. These include three types of ALL with specific chromosome abnormalities, namely, i) t (9; 22), ii) t (4; 11) and iii) t (1;19) and four subtypes of AML, i) with minimal differentiation or AML-M0, ii) with basophilic precursors or M2Baso, iii) AML (M4/M5) with t (8; 16) and iv) AML with trilineage myelodysplasia. Biphenotypic acute leukaemia constitutes also a distinct entity with features of ALL and AML and represents a malignancy probably affecting multipotent stem cells. We propose an objective evaluation system for biphenotypic leukaemias based on a score in which the various lineage markers are graded according to their known specificity.

Notes: Abstract Two enzymes were purified from the green algaCodium fragile, collected in 1988 at Fukuoka, Japan, by batch-wise ion-exchange extraction, affinity chromatography and ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using Boc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Arg-pNA as a substrate. The molecular weights of the enzymes were estimated as 38 000 and 39 000, using gel filtration HPLC. The enzymes had the same optimal pH range of 7 to 9 for both activities, and an exclusively hydrolyzed peptide bond on the carboxyl-terminal side of theL-arginine of peptidep-nitroanilides. The ratios of the enzymatic activity for X-Arg-pNA to X-Lys-pNA were larger than 100. The enzymes exhibited 30 times higher activity toward Boc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Arg-pNA when compared with trypsin. The activities were strongly inhibited by diisopropyl phosphofluoridate (DFP), and partially inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), benzamidine, leupeptin and antipain. The isolated enzymes were presumed to be trypsin-like serine protease from their primary substrate specificities and inactivation behavior.
