    Notes: Summary The chorioallantoic membrane of chick embryos was used to examine the responses of three tumour cell lines to anticancer agents, alone and in combination with hyperthermia. Fifteen minutes of hyperthermia at 42.5°C produced the most favourable anticancer effect in the B 16-F 10 grafts. The use of Adriamycin (ADM) alone and the combined use of hyperthermia and either cisplatin (CDDP), cyclophosphamide (CY) or ADM resulted in a significantly higher rate of tumour regression in the B 16-F 10 grafts from a murine melanoma. In the KK-47 grafts derived from a transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, the use of CY alone and the combination of CY and hyperthermia produced a significant tumour regression rate. In the T24 grafts neither the use of CY or CDDP alone, nor the combination of these drugs with hyperthermia demonstrated any significant effect. This method of screening anticancer agents was found to be rapid, simple to perform and inexpensive.

    Notes: Summary Hyperosmolority in the urinary tract inhibits the host defense against bacterial infection. NaCl contributes most to osmolority in the renal medulla and urine. Therefore, we studied the effect of hyperosmolar NaCl on neutrophil function. When osmolarity was increased by NaCl, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) became defective in phagocytosis, intracellular killing of bacteria, chemotactic activity, and superoxide production. This coincided with a decrease in the intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content of PMNL. Both the inhibition of superoxide production and the reduction in ATP content did not occur at 4°C. By increasing ATP content, phosphoenol pyruvic acid (PEP) protected against the decrease in superoxide production. These results suggest that leukocyte function is inhibited by high concentrations of NaCl due to the activation of the Na+−K+ pump. PEP, an ATP precursor, can protect PMNL against osmotic stress by raising the intracellular concentration of ATP.

    Notes: Summary The hypothalamic microdialysis of conscious rats was used to investigate the effects of immobilization stress (20 min) on extracellular noradrenaline(NA) levels. The stress significantly increased NA levels relative to basal efflux by 106% and this elevation continued for 40 min after release from stress.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of L-threo-3,4-dihydroxyphenylserine (L-threo-DOPS) on dopamine (DA) release and metabolism in the striatum was studied in freely moving rats by intracerebral microdialysis techniques. The DA level as well as the levels of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and homovanillic acid were significantly decreased 140 min after the administration of L-threo-DOPS (50 mg/kg intraperitoneally). The results suggest that L-threo-DOPS inhibits the release and metabolism of DA in the striatum.
