Notes: Summary In order to study the influence of the colloid osmotic pressure on albumin and total liver protein synthesis, rat hepatocytes were isolated by collagenase perfusion and incubated in Krebs-Ringer-buffer for 4 h. The colloid osmotic pressure produced by different bovine serum albumin (BSA) or dextran 60 concentrations varied from 3 to 80 mm Hg. A physiological colloid osmotic pressure of 20 mm Hg was obtained with 5.7 g BSA or 3.7 g dextran 60 per 100 ml of buffer. Albumin synthesis was measured by Laurell rocket immunoelectrophoresis. Total liver protein and total secretory protein synthesis were determined by the measurement of 1-14C-leucine incorporation. Albumin synthesis was not primarily regulated by the colloid osmotic pressure as was demonstrated by a lack of inhibition after addition of BSA. There was no significant influence of the oncotic pressure on the incorporation of14C-leucine into total liver proteins. The incorporation into total secretory proteins was inhibited by an increasing colloid osmotic pressure, mediated either by BSA or dextran, suggesting an inhibition of the secretion of plasma proteins other than albumin.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Abstract 1. A description of the technique of the self-guiding catheter (miniature catheter) of the right heart and the pulmonary artery without X-ray visualisation according to Grandjean is presented. 2. Preliminary tests were carried out to estimate the range of error of the method, and to determine technical difficulties, particularly those that arise in infants and children. 3. Examples are given which demonstrate the practical application of the technique in infants and children. 4. The limitations of the method, especially the difficulties that risea in introducing the self-guiding catheter, as well as the complications and dangers of the self-guiding catheterization technique of the heart are mentioned. Extrasystoles which sometimes occur in rapid succestion were regularly encountered, as well as even more dangerous disturbances of the cardiac rate. In three cases a loop and knot formation of the miniature catheter was observed. 5. Indications and contraindications of the self-guiding cardiac catheterization technique are discussed. The method is not suitable for the pretive diagnosis-opera of angiocardiopathies. It can supplement the usual cardiac catheterization; it is excellently suitable for controlling the course, and checking up pre- and post-operative cases. The greatest advantage of the method is that it can be used in out-patients.

Notes: Summary Chemotherapy of the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus in man with high oral doses of mebendazole has only been partly successful. In order to improve effective pharmacotherapy of this disease with mebendazole, the optimal time for blood sampling has been assessed and the mebendazole concentrations acting on the parasite have been compared with their viability. The optimal time for blood sampling was analysed in 14 patients during longterm treatment with mebendazole. The plasma level 4 h after the morning dose exhibited the best correlation with the average 24-h concentration, suggesting that the plasma level should be monitored 4 h after the morning dose. In 22 patients undergoing surgery for hydatid disease, the mebendazole concentration in cyst fluid was significantly correlated with its plasma level 4 h after the morning dose. In 13 of them the free drug concentration was determined by equilibrium dialysis and it was almost identical with the free mebendazole concentration in plasma. Results of viability tests in 12 cases revealed viable cysts in 6 cases and possibly viable cysts in 6 other cases. Even patients treated for more than 12 months still had viable cysts.
