Notes: The electric field induced localization and decoupling of quantized levels (FILD) in double quantum wells is studied both theoretically and experimentally and is shown to result in a novel blue shift of optical absorption peaks. The absorption edge of doubly coupled 54 A(ring) GaAs wells separated by a 5.7 A(ring) AlAs inserted barrier is found to shift by 8 meV toward the higher energy under a moderate field (〉30 kV/cm). Considering the field-induced variation of quantized levels and excitonic effect, the observed shifts of most peaks are well explained by the simple effective mass theory. Device applications of this novel electro-optic effect (FILD) are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Five male Japanese subjects, undressed, were investigated at rest and during ergometer work at 30°, 25°, 20°, 15° and 10°C and the results were compared with similar measurements on Caucasians. The metabolic rate and mean skin temperature were higher at temperatures below 20°C than in Caucasians, while the correlation curve of metabolic rate versus skin temperature was similar. The rectal temperature decreased with lowering of the air temperature in these subjects in contrast to the observations in Caucasians. The thermal conductance of the Japanese was higher at the control air temperature, but became lower or equal in cool air as compared with that of Caucasians. The lower critical temperature was around 24°C. The results indicate that Japanese men react to cold with a mixture of both metabolic and insulative adaptation which differs from the response of Caucasians. The difference may be due to the environment, living habits and bodily constitution.

Notes: Abstract The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of adrenergic β-blockers on agonistic behavior in male mice, using quantitative ethological methods. Agonistic behavior was evoked using a resident-intruder paradigm. The following drugs were administered orally at four dose levels (vehicle, 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg) to either resident or intruder mice: dl-propranolol, practolol, d-propranolol, and l-propranolol. When the resident was treated with either dl-propranol or l-propranolol, aggressive episodes (offensive sideways posture, attack bite, tail rattle) were suppressed significantly in a dose-dependent manner, whereas practolol and d-propranolol were ineffective. All treatments except the high dose of l-propranolol failed to affect the resident's solitary behavior (locomotion). When the intruder was treated with β-blockers, agonistic behavior was not altered. Since practolol does not cross the blood-brain barrier, the differential suppression of agonistic behavior is due to the central action of β-blockers. d-Propranolol does cross the blood-brain barrier but is devoid of β-receptor blocking property; hence l-propranolol suppression of agonistic behavior implies inactivation of brain adrenergic β-receptors. The findings seem to indicate that β-blockers such as dl-propranolol and l-propranolol have a psychotropic action.

Notes: Summary The spatial and temporal pattern of oscillating temperatures on the cell surface of a plasmodial strand ofPhysarum polycephalum was measured with a sensitive thermal image camera. The longitudinal tension of the strand was studied simultaneously. In the absence of chemical stimulation, the phases of the temperature oscillation observed at various portions of the strand were entrained with almost coincidental phase. The temperature and tension oscillation were synchronized, although the phase difference between them was occasionally changed. With local chemical stimulation, the phase of the temperature oscillation advanced in the portion to which the plasmodium would be induced to migrate. The phases between temperature and tension oscillations then became constant. The mechanism by which the plasmodium processes local information of chemical stimulus to global information for the migration is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Six fasciolicides, bithionol, bromofenofos, DS-6, nitroxynil, oxyclozanide and tribromsalan, were tested for mutagenicity in theSalmonella reverse mutation test usingS.typhimurium tester strains TA100, TA98, TA153, TA1537 and TA1538 and the micronucleus test in mice. None of the fasciolicides increased the number of revertant colonies in any tester strain in the presence and absence of S9 mix, nor did they induce a significant increase of the micronuclei in erythrocytes. Taking the high correlation between mutagenicity and carcinogenicity into consideration, these results suggest that the fasciolicides tested in this investigation are devoid of carcinogenic action.

Notes: Abstract The mixed passive hemagglutination (MPHA) test was used for the first time in an attempt to diagnose human pulmonary dirofilariasis in a comparison with the results of ELISA. Eight of nine patients tested with the MPHA test were positive and one was false-positive; these results coincided exactly with those of ELISA. Qualitative agreement between the MPHA test and ELISA was 90.4% of 374 human sera. The present study indicates that the MPHA test seems to be a promising diagnostic tool for human pulmonary dirofilariasis.
