Notes: Copper films were epitaxially grown on (100)Si substrates at room temperatures utilizing low kinetic-energy particle bombardment of growing copper film surfaces. The crystallographic structure of the film, such as (100) or (111) orientation, was selected by controlling the energy of incident particles. Low-temperature, damage-free substrate surface cleaning has also been realized by the low kinetic-energy particle process, which has made it possible to form ideal metal-semiconductor contacts without employing any alloying heat cycles.

Notes: By employing stress compensation technology in conjunction with an ultrahigh vacuum ion implanter, we have obtained two orders of magnitude smaller reverse-bias current levels in n+p junctions annealed at 550 °C as compared to the previous data. When samples are made with an optimum stress compensation condition, the magnitude of reverse-bias currents in n+p junctions as well as the carrier deactivation during post-implantation anneal becomes smallest. In order to further reduce the reverse-bias current level, it is shown that the elimination of contamination involvement during the implantation process is most essential.

Notes: Butanol-extracted water-soluble adjuvant (Bu-WSA) obtained from Bacterionema matruchotti was mitogenic to murine splenic B lymphocytes, but not T lymphocytes. When murine splenic cells were cultured in the presence of Bu-WSA and concanavalin A (Con A) together. [3H|thymidine uptake of the culture cells synergically increased. The mechanism of the synergy of Con A and Bu-WSA and the participation of interleukin (IL) 1 and 2 in the synergy were studied. The proliferation cells in the synergy were I yt-1− 23− lymphocytes.’la-positive accessory cells were required for the response. When separated cell populations and Marbrook-type culture vessels were used, a mixed cell population of T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes or macrophages (Mφ) produced some active factor(s) after co-stimulation by Con A and Bu-WSA, and the factors enhanced DNA synthesis of another Con A-activatcd T lymphocyte population. Supernatants obtained from the spleen cell cultures or the mixed cell cultures with T lymphocytes and Mφ in the presence of Con A and Bu-WSA contained greater amounts of IL-1 and IL-2 than those from cultures containing Con A or Bu-WSA alone. An addition of exogenous IL-1 or IL-2 to spleen cell cultures with Con A resulted in a proliferative response like that obtained through co-stimulation by Con A and Bu-WSA. These results suggest that the synergistic effect of Con A and Bu-WSA on the proliferative response in murine splenic cells is sustained by the enhancement of production of these T-lymphocyte growth factors.

Notes: Summary In the activated sludge treatment plant of Onoda City, bulking has often been caused by filamentous bacteria, types 021 N and I-2. Bulking disappeared when Trochilioides recta increased in the mixed liquor of the aeration tank. T.-recta was observed to ingest types 021 N or I-2. It may therefore be anticipated that this type of bulking could be controlled by T. recta.

Notes: Summary Global features of tropical convection, sea surface temperature (SST) and atmospheric circulation associated with the Pacific-Japan Oscillation (PJO) are examined by using monthly mean global data for 6 years (1979–1984). It is shown that the PJO is not a local phenomena limited to the western-Pacific but related to global-scale atmosphere-ocean variations. The PJO highly correlates with interannual variations of SST in the tropical Pacific. During summers in which positive SST anomaly occurs in the tropical western Pacific, convective activity in the western Pacific especially near Philippines is strongly enhanced but that in the whole equatorial eastern Pacific is greatly suppressed due to negative SST anomaly in these areas. The Walker circulation is intensified in the equatorial Pacific and twin cyclonic cells at 200 mb are generated in the subtropical Pacific of both hemispheres. Strong anticyclonic circulations take place in the northern middle latitudes extending from East China to Northwest Pacific. Anomalous circulations are also generated in the other extratropical regions in the both Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
