    Notes: Summary Two forms of ribonuclease H (RNase H) have been identified both in uninfected and Herpes simplex virus (HSV-)infected BHK cells. Identical RNase H species were detected in control- as well as in infected cells. RNase H I and II have not been found to be associated both with host cell DNA polymerase α and β and HSV-induced DNA polymerase. Infection of BHK cells with HSV type 1 does not lead to a pronounced alteration of RNase H II activity but to an increases (3-fold) of the extractable RNase H I activity. RNase H I activity increases to a maximum between 8–10 hours p.i.; the bulk of HSV-DNA synthesis occurs between 6–8 hours p.i. From these experiments we draw the preliminary conclusion that RNase H I is involved in the degradation of the RNA primer which is covalently linked to newly synthesized HSV-DNA strands.

    Notes: Summary The thymidine kinase-complex isolated from herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) is associated with the following enzyme activities: ATP:dThd (dCyd) deoxypyrimidine kinase, ATP:dTMP thymidylate kinase, ADP:dThd- and AMP:dThd5′-phosphotransferase. In kinetic experiments it is shown that ara-AMP inhibits AMP:dThd- and ADP:dThd phosphotransferase activity, while acyclo-GMP impairs ADP:dThd phosphotransferase reaction only; the inhibition was found to be non-compertitive. The functional subunit ATP:dThd kinase was not affected by either compound.

    Notes: Abstract The dissociation of the gorgonian Eunicella cavolinii (Koch) into single cells was successfully accomplished. These cells readily formed aggregates of a size of 2 100 μm during incubation in roller tubes; no aggregate formation was observed in non-rotating Petri dishes. The formation of aggregates was not influenced by Ca++, urea or trypsin; it was also independent of temperature (4° to 30°C) and pH (5.5–9.0). The intercellular material of the gorgonian contains a galactose-specific lectin, as determined by double diffusion experiments and haemagglutination inhibition experiments using a series of galactoglycoconjugates. This lectin converted the aggregation-susceptible cells to aggregation-deficient cells. These findings are summarized in a novel model, in which it is assumed that the lectin masks the function of the cell surface-associated aggregation molecules.

    Notes: Abstract The homogeneous poly(A)-specific 2′,3′-exoribonuclease from calf thymus gland, which cleaves both 3′,5′-and 2′,5′-linked oligoriboadenylates, does not degrade (xyloA2'p)2 xyloA, the xylofuranosyladenosine analogue of the 2-5A core. This oligonucleotide, which is supposed to enter intact cells rapidly, was found to possess an increased stability and an enhanced antiherpesvirus activity compared to the natural (A2'p)2A (Eppstein, D. A., Barnett, J. W., Marsh, Y. V., Gosselin, G. and Imbach, J.-L. (1983) Nature 302, 723–724). The poly(A) anabolic enzyme, poly(A) polymerase (Mn2+-dependent), from the same source, which is initiated by (A3'p)2A and its higher oligomers, does not accept 2–5A core and its xyloadenosine analogue as primer. Both oligonucleotides exert no influence on endoribonuclease IV and on the integrity of the poly(A)-ribonucleoprotein complex.

    Notes: Abstract To demonstrate the affinity of RNA-containing polyribosomal components (isolated from L5178y cells) to microtubules, microtubule protein was attached to an insoluble matrix. In contrast to ribosomes, poly(A) (+) mRNA and poly(A)-RNP were found to bind to the matrix. Using synthetic polyribonucleotides, no significant differences in the binding properties of single- and double stranded polymers of different base composition to microtubule protein were observed. However, binding is dependent on the size of the polymer; a minimal chain length of 12 nucleotide units is required.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les propriétes optiques des terres rares divalentes europium et ytterbium mesurées par transmission et par reflection dans le domaine spectral de 0.3 à 4.0 eV à temperature ambiente montre la relation endroite entre ces deux métaux et les métaux alcalinoterreux. La structure de la partie réele de la conductivitéσ(ω) est attributée á des transitions optiques interbandes sur la base de récents calculs de bandes pour l'europium. La similarité des courbes experimentalles d'absorption de l'europium et du barium suggère une structure de bandes presque identique dans le domaine spectral considéré, et par conséquent les électrons de la couche 4f de l'europium n'ont pas d'influence sur le spectre optique de ce métal.
    Abstract: Abstract Optical properties of the divalent rare earth metals europium and ytterbium, obtained by transmission and reflection measurements in the spectral range 0.3–4.0 eV at room temperature, demonstrate the close relationship between these two metals and the alkaline earth metals, especially barium. The structure occurring in the real part of the conductivityσ(ω) could be assigned to optical interband transitions by means of recent energy band calculations for europium. The similarity of the experimental absorption curves of europium and barium suggests, in the spectral range considered, an almost identical band structure of the two metals and, moreover, no effect of the 4f-electrons of europium in the optical spectrum exists.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die optischen Eigenschaften der zweiwertigen Seltenen Erdmetalle Europium und Ytterbium, welche durch Transmissions- und Reflexionsmessungen im Spektralbereich 0,3–4,0 eV bei Zimmertemperatur erhalten wurden, zeigen die nahe Verwandtschaft dieser beiden Metalle zu den Erdalkalimetallen, speziell zu Barium, an. Die im Realteil der Leitfähigkeitσ(ω) auftretende Struktur läßt sich mit Hilfe von kürzlich durchgeführten Bandrechnungen für Europium optischen Interbandübergängen zuschreiben. Aus der Ähnlichkeit der experimentellen Absorptionskurven für Europium und Barium kann geschlossen werden, daß im betrachteten Spektralbereich die Bandstruktur der beiden Metalle im wesentlichen dieselbe ist und daß außerdem kein Einfluß der 4f-Elektronen im optischen Spektrum auftritt.

    Notes: Experiments were carried out to test the hypothesis that fibronectin is involved in reaggregation of dissociated sponge cells. Cells from the siliceous sponge Geodia cydonium were extracted with urea to solubilize fibronectin from cells of higher multicellular organisms. The crude extract was further fractionated by DNA, heparin, and collagen affinity chromatography; they were termed Geodia fibronectinlike fractions. The fibronectinlike fractions contained a series of proteins with molecular weights different from that of the genuine fibronectin. The Geodia fibronectinlike fractions did not react with antiserum, produced against human fibronectin, under formation of a precipitin line. Using this antiserum the sponge cells could not be specifically labeled with FITC-anti-IgG antiserum. Radioimmunoprecipitation experiments revealed that the Geodia fractions contain - if at all - 0.1% fibronectin or fibronectinlike protein at the most. In the crucial experiments it was shown that the Geodia fibronectinlike fractions, human fibronectin, and antifibronectin antiserum exerted no influence on adhesion of Geodia cells either in the absence or in the presence of the soluble aggregation factor. Based on these findings, we conclude that fibronectin is apparently not present on Geodia cells and does not play a role in aggregation of this biological system.
