Notes: Summary The alternating current values,i dl. sat. corresponding to the saturation point of the surfactants at a potential corresponding to maximum desorption have been determined using tensammetric technique (alternating current polarography). The calibration curves follow an equation of the type of theLangmuir isotherm for all the compounds studied. It is observed that the value ofi dl. sat. thus obtained can be used successfully for comparing the polarity of a series of closely related organic compounds in aqueous solution, which are known to exhibit tensammetric waves.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden die Oberflächenaktivitäten eng verwandter organischer Verbindungen durch tensammetrische Studien mit der Methode der Wechselstrompolarographie bestimmt.
Notes: Summary Surface activity of closely related organic compounds are compared by utilising the optimum concentrations corresponding to more negative peaks and concentrations required to remove or to suppress less negative reduction peak due to organic compound and due to metal ion to maximum extent instead of tensammetric peak by a. c. polarography. Surface activity measurements are pH dependent. The correlation between optimum concentrations of surface-active substance and the amounts of reducible species would be of great significance in suppressing the polarographic maxima in d. c. polarography.

Notes: Summary An analysis of the surface properties of unsized, untreated, “Thornel-50” graphite fibers was made using measurements of adsorption from solution. The technique used was continuous flow solid-liquid chromatography. The specific surface area of the “Thornel-50” fibers was found to be 1.3–1.4 m2/g. The shape of the adsorption isotherms, and calculated isosteric heat of adsorption data, showed evidence for at least two energetically different kinds of adsorption sites on the surface of “Thornel-50”. These were identified as the sides (edges of basal planes) and the tops (faces of basal planes) of graphite crystallites on the surface of the fiber. The fractions of these two kinds of adsorption sites were found to be approximately 0.25 and 0.75, respectively. All the solute molecules studied, including the polymer molecules, physically adsorbed in a horizontal (flat) orientation on the fiber surface.

Notes: Summary Unit discharge evoked in gastric afferents by tactile stimulation of the frog's stomach was inhibited by electrical stimulation of gastric vagi and facilitated by cervical sympathetic stimulation. The inhibition or the facilitation of the evoked response depended on the mode and parameters of stimulation used. The tactually-evoked activity was also inhibited by gastric distention in well-fed animals (Type-I). This inhibition was released by gastric vagotomy, while cervical sympathectomy had no appreciable effect on the evoked inhibitory response. In Type-II animals (animals kept on chronic food deprivation) the tactually-evoked activity was facilitated, rather than inhibited, by coupling tactile stimulation with gastric distention. This facilitation was abolished by cervical sympathectomy, but was not significantly affected by gastric vagotomy. It appears that the differential modulating control of gastric mechanoreceptor activity is biased by the state of energy balance and is brought about by a dual efferent control system mediated through autonomic nerves, gastric vagal fibers being inhibitory, and cervical sympathetic nerves being facilitatory to the tactile response.

Notes: Summary The effect of gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride and Telodrin both in absence and presence of ammonium and nitrate nitrogen carriers on shoot and root growth and carboydrate and nitrogen constituents of sugarcane was studied. The pesticides induced shoot emergence and development of tillers and roots. Shoot growth, nitrogen intake and insoluble nitrogen content invariably increased by pesticide application while soluble carbohydrate and soluble nitrogen content of the shoot decreased. Pesticides also increased the water-soluble nitrate content of the soil. The effect of pesticides was not confined to ammonical source of nitrogen rather the pesticides proved equally effective under nitrate source of nitrogen and also in absence of additional nitrogen. Beneficial effect of pesticides on growth and development of sugarcane appears largely on account of more efficient utilisation of soil and fertilizer nitrogen. The results raise an interesting possibility of using these pesticides as growth stimulators to increase the efficiency of sugarcane plants growing under sub-optimal conditions of nitrogen

Notes: Summary An endeavour was made to assess the prevalence of Toxoplasma infection in sheep and goats in Hissar using the indirect haemagglutination test. The incidence in sheep was 6·6 per cent and in goats 11·5 per cent and was higher in the female than in the male in both species.

Notes: Summary The fine structure of the neural sheath, glial cells and nerve cells in the brain of adult male houseflies is described. The neural sheath is composed of neural lamella and perineurium. The neural lamella consists of an external lamina and collagen-like fibrils which are embedded in an amorphous matrix. The perineurial cells form a continuous layer around the brain. On their inner surface, perineurial cells form junctional complexes with glial cell processes. A cortical cellular layer composed of neurons and glial cells surrounds the centrally located neuropil. Three types of glial cells are identified. Glial cells differ in size and in relative development and distribution of organelles. Thin processes of glioplasm completely surround the cell bodies of the neurons. Five types of neurons are described. Most of the neurons are monopolar, a few are bipolar.
