Notes: Abstract Atmospheric aerosols are a crucial link in the physical processes, involved in the formation and growth of precipitating clouds. Extensive aerosol measurements in surface air and in the lower troposphere were made at inland and coastal stations of different regions in India. At inland stations, the hygroscopic fraction of the total aerosol content is found to be a useful characteristic for distinguishing between the monsoon and summer airflow, as well as an indicator for a good or a badly developed monsoon. At coastal stations, however, this feature is not observed. Measurements as a function of height brought out that the aerosol varied widely in air over different seasons. During monsoon, the hygroscopic fraction was found highest at the cloud base level and was closely linked to the development of rain. Details of these investigations are presented.

Notes: Summary Aircraft observations were made on cloud droplet size distribution in 19 cases of seeded warm cumulus clouds in three meteorologically different regions. An examination of the data suggested the following: (i) In all the 5 cases at Bombay (maritime), and in 6 out of the 7 cases at Poona (modified maritime) the values of median volume diameter, maximum cloud droplet size and liquid water content showed increase after seeding as compared to what they were before. The increases noticed in the median volume diameter ranged up to 48% at Bombay and 478% at Poona. The liquid water content and the maximum droplet size respectively increased upward of 56% and 25% at Bombay and 60% and 31% at Poona. (ii) In 4 out of the 7 cloud cases at Rihand (continental), the values of the parameters referred to above showed increase. The median volume diameter increased up to 372%. The liquid water content and the maximum droplet size increased upward of 160% and 66% respectively. (iii) In the cloud cases wherein the values of the parameters decreased after seeding, the decreases noticed ranged up to 94%. (iv) More unstable conditions prevailed on the days when the seeded clouds showed visible rain than on the days when they did not.

Notes: Abstract Hepatic echo patterns and “right lobe to left lobe longitudinal diameter ratio” were compared in age- and sex-matched 100 normal subjects and 76 patients with diffuse liver diseases (38 cirrhotics and 38 noncirrhotics) in a prospective sonographic study. Various echo patterns, assigned to cirrhotic livers (bright liver, micronodulation, beam attenuation), could not differentiate cirrhosis from other diffuse liver diseases. In cirrhotic livers, the right lobe manifested a significant shrinkage, while the left lobe exhibited almost no alteration. Considering the right to left lobe ratio of 1.30 as a discriminatory value, the cirrhosis could be diagnosed with a sensitivity of 74%, a specificity of 100%, and an accuracy of 93%; the sensitivity rates were seen to be higher in postnecrotic cirrhosis than in alcoholic cirrhosis.

Notes: Abstract A prospective sonographic study was undertaken in ageand sex-matched normal subjects and patients with portal hypertension to evaluate the effects of a meal on the portal venous system. Postprandial increase in portal vessel diameters was proved to be statistically significant in normal individuals, with mean variations of 27.9% (16–60%), 46.5% (25–83%), and 45.2% (20–75%), respectively, for portal, splenic, and superior mesenteric veins. In contrast, this effect was insignificant in the hypertensive portal venous system. A diminished meal-related caliber variation in portal, splenic, and mesenteric veins less than 16%, 25%, and 20%, respectively, could be diagnostic of portal hypertension.

Notes: Abstract Important electrothermographic characteristics such as charge acceptance, surface-potential decay with and without exposure to infrared radiations, retention of surface charge, contrast potential and residual potential of pure and sensitized cellulose acetate layers have been investigated. An attempt has been made to explain the results on the basis of electrical properties. Leucomalachite Green (LMG) is found to be very effective in controlling the thermosensitivity in the cellulose acetate layers. Cellulose acetate layer sensitized with 20% by wt of LMG shows a suitable high-contrast potential of 890 V with zero residual potential on heating its surface to 62° C and is a suitable material for electrothermographic and related applications.

Notes: Abstract The diffusion coefficients (D) of Au in three binary amorphous Zr x Ni100−x (x=61, 65, and 67) alloys were measured in the temperature range 549–623 K using the technique of the Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS). The D values were found to lie in the range 1.0×10−21–9.0×10−20 m2s−1 for different alloys. The activation energy (Q) was calculated in each case on the basis of an observed Arrhenius temperature dependence of D. The activation energy was found to scale with the crystallization temperature (T x) of the alloy. Other published measurements for Au diffusion in amorphous Zr-Ni alloys also appear to follow the scaling relation between Q and T x.

Notes: Summary Certain problems in optical scattering are best understood when the more complicated exact scattering theory is replaced by an approximation. The Fraunhofer approximation is a well-known example. In the past ten years a considerable amount of work has been done in various disciplines towards assessing the usefulness of a new approximation referred to in the literature either as the eikonal approximation or as the high-energy approximation. The purpose of this paper is to provide a much needed review of this work and in addition to examine the historical evolution of this approximation which essentially started in optics when Bruns introduced the term eikonal in 1895.

Notes: Extraction of lipids from whole peanut kernels can be accomplished much faster in an automatic solvent extractor with a lower solvent: seed ratio than by immersion or in a Soxhlet extractor. A possible explanation of the function of moisture in the extraction of lipids from the whole peanut kernels has been put forward. This mode of extraction is expected to produce economically fat-lean kernels, while oil is obtained as a co-product.
