    Notes: The expressions for the intensity distribution in birefringence images and computer-simulated images of a straight, pure screw dislocation with Burgers vector a[111] viewed end-on in cubic crystals have been obtained for the first time by considering the anisotropy of both elastic and photoelastic properties of the material. The effect of elastic and photoelastic anisotropy on birefringence images of screw dislocation viewed end-on has been discussed. And the computer-simulated images have been compared with the experimental images observed in Ba(NO3)2 crystals grown from aqueous solution.

    Notes: Deep levels related to iron in n-type silicon have been investigated using thermally stimulated capacitance (TSCAP) combined with minority carrier injection. The TSCAP measurement reveals two traps of EV+0.31 and EV+0.41 eV. The trap of EV+0.41 eV is a donor due to interstitial iron. The trap of EV+0.31 eV, due to a complex of interstitial iron and hydrogen, is observed in the sample etched chemically with an acid mixture containing HF and HNO3 and annihilates after annealing at 175 °C for 30 min. It is demonstrated that interstitial 3d transition metals such as vanadium, chromium, and iron tend to form complexes with hydrogen in n-type silicon, and the complexes induce donor levels below the donor levels of the isolated interstitial species. This trend is related to the interaction between the metals and hydrogen in the complexes. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Defects induced by B+ implantation at 0.7 MeV into n+p diodes were investigated using leakage current and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). Leakage current increases drastically by implantation to a dose of more than 3×1013 cm−2. DLTS spectra reveal two hole trap levels in the shallower region than the projected range of B+. One level at 265 K (Ev+0.65 eV) is associated with point defects around dislocation kinks formed by B+ implantation to doses of more than 3×1013 cm−2. Another level at 290 K (Ev+0.67 eV) is mainly responsible for the excess leakage current. This level was, for the first time, found in p-Si after high-energy ion implantation followed by annealing.

    Notes: Two sympatric morphs (type A with a vertebral number of 25 and type B with a vertebral number of 24) of striped jack Pseudocaranx dentex (Bloch & Schneider) were analysed genetically. A part of the 16S–rRNA region of mtDNA was amplified with polymerase chain reaction for 24 specimens, and a restriction enzyme fragment polymorphism showed significant differences between the two types. While all specimens sampled in Ogasawara were identified as type B, about 90% of striped jack in Oita were type A and 10% were type B. Although the spawning areas of these two types are still unknown, significant genetic differences between the two sympatric morphs show that recruitment and migration patterns might differ from each other. The current system suggests the possibility that the juveniles of type B in Oita may migrate from the Ogasawara Islands.

    Notes: Isozymes and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were used as genetic markers to evaluate the reproductive success of transplanted stocks of ayu Plecoglossus ultivelis in a highly stocked Japanese river, the Shinano. Two major alleles at the MPP and GPI-A* loci and 26 mtDNA clonal genotypes were demonstrated and surveyed in two non-native source populations and five collections from the Shinano River. Contributing populations were clearly discriminated in their isozymes and mtDNA composition. Despite the stocking of large numbers of non-native fish, they have had little effect on the genetic characteristics of the native population. Maturation and migration of the stocking and native populations was traced by genetic markers to clear the mechanism of this event. All the contributing populations join together in the migration toward the spawning ground throughout the spawning season but these contributing populations occur independently of each other in other sites of the river.

    Notes: To determine the effect of environmental factors on otolith increment deposition in Japanese eel, Anguilla japonicaT. & S., a total of 337 elvers with a tetracycline time mark in the otolith were reared for 50 days under various experimental temperatures (12, 19 and 25°C), feeding rations (fed and unfed) and salinities (one-third sea water of I 2k and fresh water). Fish were sequentially sampled after 5. 15, 30 and 50 days and their sagittal otolith increments were observed. Under fed conditions at 19 and 25°C, daily increment deposition was observed throughout the 50-day period. In unfed groups and/or at 12°C, the rates of increment deposition were reduced sharply after the fifth day and no clear increments were added. No difference was obtained in increment deposition rates between one-third sea water and fresh water groups. Increment deposition rate was independent of otolith and body size.

    Notes: Coregonus peled (Gmelin) embryos at the eyed stage were immersed in tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) solution (600 mg l−1) and fluorescent marks on the otoliths from fish were identified under a UV light microscope. Three weeks after treatment, when the larval fish had hatched, multiple primordia of the sagitta had fluorescent bands whose locations suggest that calcification begins before formation of the otolith's core. Upon hatching, increments were few or absent, and daily increments started forming after hatching. In coregonid larvae immersed in TC solution immediately after hatching, the fluorescent band was only 1 day's growth increment wide in the otolith. The age of larvae based on ring counts after marking corresponded to the actual age, but further studies are required. Triple marks due to 35-h immersions in TC solution separated by 5–7 day feeding periods were clearly readable in the otoliths. One month after treatment the fluorescent marks were identified under UV light on otoliths from every fish. In treated embryos, 38% of fish had marks 3 months after TC immersion, whereas in treated larvae 60–80% of fish grown up to 38.7 mm were marked.

    Notes: The ontogeny of schooling behaviour was investigated in laboratory-reared striped jack Pseudocaranx dentex larvae and juveniles. Mean separation angle between nearest individuals averaged 78 and 82° in 10- and 12-mm fish, respectively, and decreased to 57° in 16-mm fish. In addition, interindividual distance decreased from three times body length in 12-mm fish to twice the body length in 16-mm individuals; this value continued to decrease gradually to 1·3 at 19 mm to 0·79 at 30 mm. Mutual attraction due to visual recognition was observed in 12-mm fish and increased with total length. The optokinetic response (Ro, the ability of a fish to keep station with moving patterns) first appeared in 4–6-mm larvae. In spite of the traditional emphasis of the importance of Ro in schooling behaviour, the onset of Ro was insufficient to result in school formation. The emergence of mutual attraction seems essential for the ontogeny of schooling.

    Notes: Totals of 2.67 x 105 and 7.56 x 105 juvenile red sea bream of three size groups (10, 20 and 40 mm t.l.) marked with a fluorescent substance in the otolith were released in News Bay, Oita Prefecture, Japan, in July 1987 and June 1988, respectively; the aim was to estimate growth and mortality of different developmental stages.Of fish released in 1987 and 1988, 10 618 and 4413, respectively were recaptured during those two years. Released fish remained in the bay until the end of summer, and afterwards migrated out towards open waters. Fish of the 40-mm group released in 1987 grew to over 200 mm t.l. in one year. Mean growth rate for 19 days after release was higher in the 40-mm group (0.87 mm day−1) than in the 20-mm group (0.74mm day−1). Survival rates over 19 days were 59.0 and 10.1 % for 40-mm and 20-mm fish, respectively, in 1987, and those over 30 days were 69.2, 3.3 and 0.0% for 40-mm, 20-mm and 10-mm fish, respectively, in 1988.Cannibalism was indicated by the presence of marked otoliths for 20-mm fish in the stomachs of a few 40-mm individuals recaptured 2 days after release. Size-dependent growth and size-selective mortality were both noted in juvenile red sea bream, i.e. the relative size differential between larger and smaller individuals was maintained in the period between marking and recapture, and mortality was inversely proportional to size.

    Notes: The burrow morphology of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica was studied using in situ resin-casting in a mud bottomed tidal drainage channel adjacent to the Fukui River in Tokushima, Japan. Two eels (62·5 and 56·3 cm total length) were initially fished from the burrows to verify that they were being used by A. japonica. Casts were made of 10 burrows that were found to have from one to three openings and main tunnels that were parallel to the axis of water flow in the channel. The maximum depths of the tunnels in the mud were 17·8–30·0 cm. The diameters of main tunnels ranged from 1·2 to 7·9 cm, were almost always wider than the bodies of the Japanese eels examined, and were more variable in the horizontal axis than in the vertical axis. There were no other animals capable of constructing a long and thin burrow in this channel, so these observations indicate that anguillids are able to construct their own burrows in soft mud sediments that may be used for extended periods of time.
