Notes: Summary Rat brain tumor was used as a model to evaluate radiation therapy with and without misonidazole. BD-IX rats were implanted intracerebrally with an ethylnitrosourea-induced glioma. Three series of experiments were performed, with radiation given 14 days after inoculation of the glioma clone. In each series, the following radiation doses were given: 500 rads once, 1,000 rads once; and 1,000 rads twice, every time with or without two different doses of misonidazole. Radiation therapy significantly prolonged survival when compared to the longevity of the control group. The dose of 1,000 rads given twice was highly effective and the life-span of tumor-bearing rats increased from 72% to 121%. Misonidazole plus irradiation negated the prolongation of survival, achieved with radiation therapy alone.

Notes: Abstract Undifferentiated gliomas of the brain stem were confirmed surgically in two young children. The patients were treated by aggressive irradiation of the entire neuraxis, similar to that administered for medulloblastoma. Therapy resulted in a good prognosis and there was no tumor recurrence.

Notes: Abstract The in vitro identification of copigmentation was carried out using anthocyanins, such as malvidin 3RGac5G, petunidin 3RGac5G and delphinidin 3RGac5G and the flavone isovitexin. These are major pigments of Iris ensata. These anthocyanins brought about copigmentation, i.e., the bathochromic shift (bluing effect) of visible λ max due to increased concentrations of isovitexin, and 32 to 35 nm were estimated as the magnitude (Δλ max) of each shift. In addition, the absorption spectrum of 0.1 mM malvidin 3RGac5G, 0.07 mM petunidin 3RGac5G and 0.7 mM isovitexin mixture closely matched those of the fresh outer perianths of the bluish purple cultivars, ‘Suiten-isshoku’, ‘Hekikai’ and ‘Yakonotama’ which belong to the malvidin 3RGac5G - petunidin 3RGac5G type of I. ensata. Therefore, these results indicated that the bluing effect on the flower color of the bluish purple cultivars of this species was caused at least in part by the copigmentation between these anthocyanins and the flavone isovitexin. For the copigment effects of isovitexin among malvidin 3RGac5G, petunidin 3RGac5G and delphinidin 3RGac5G, λ max and Δλ max of delphinidin 3RGac5G was slightly higher than those of malvidin 3RGac5G or petunidin 3RGac5G, and the copigmentation of delphinidin 3RGac5G was characterized by a higher concentration of isovitexin. Finally, the breeding for blue flowers due to copigmentation of delphinidin 3RGac5G with isovitexin in I. ensata was discussed.

Notes: Summary The anthocyanins in outer perianths of seven varieties and one telotrisomic line of Japanese garden iris, Iris ensata Thunb., were analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography procedures. Two new anthocyanins, peonidin 3RGac5G and cyanidin 3RGac5G were putatively detected in this species, and peonidin 3RGac5G was the major anthocyanin for all the varieties except ‘Telotri-1’ and cyanidin 3RGac5G the major anthocyanin for ‘Telotri-1’. Moreover, cyanidin 3RGac5G and peonidin 3RGac5G are useful anthocyanins for the breeding of red and magenta flowers. Finally, the breeding strategy for new flower varieties using cyanidin 3RGac5G and peonidin 3RGac5G was discussed.

Notes: Abstract Shell effects are found in the size distributions of fission fragments from doubly-charged silver clusters. The energy differences between parent cluster and sum of a pair of fragmented clusters are calculated for various fission channels using the theory of shell corrections. Oscillative structures observed in the size distribution are shown to be due to shell effects of fragments. It is also found that the cluster deformation due to shell effects produces the even-odd alternation in the size distribution.

Notes: Abstract Symmetric fragmentation of multiply charged alkali-metal clusters consisting of several tens of atoms is studied. The energy variation during the fragmentation process is calculated using the theory ofshell corrections, in which total energy is written as a sum of the liquid-droplet and shell correction terms. It is found that the variation of the shell correction term is much larger than that of the liquid-droplet one if the parent cluster is metastable. Fragmentation into nearly-magic cluster is most favored regardless of parent size since the barrier height for fragmentation is mainly determined by the shell configuration of fragments rather than that of the parent.
