Notes: Abstract High levels of arginase have been detected in gastric adenocarcinoma. To examine the hypothesis that this is due to macrophage infiltration into the tumour, we localized the cellular distribution of arginase by immunohistochemical staining. We examined gastric adenocarcinomas and their corresponding normal tissues (n=45), leiomyomas (n=2), leiomyosarcomas (n=3), human gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines (n=3), and benign gastric ulcers (n=4) by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique. Macrophages with strong arginase immunoreactivity were observed infiltrating both gastric normal and cancer tissues. No arginase immunoreactivity was observed in normal mucosal gland, muscular and serosal tissues or benign gastric ulcers. The immunoreactivity of arginase was positive but heterogeneous in most specimens of gastric adenocarcinoma (62.2%) and was absent from gastric intestinal metaplasia, leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas. Among the 28 neoplasms with arginase immunoreactivity, scattered immunoreactivity was also noted in adjacent dysplastic glands in 12 (42.8%) specimens. Arginase immunoreactivity was observed in all three gastric cancer cell lines. Arginase is present in the cytoplasm but not in the nucleus. These data suggest that the high arginase levels in adenocarcinoma cancer tissues originate largely from cancer cells.

Notes: Abstract. In a previous paper, the concept of a Generic Non Standard-specific Information Flow System (GNSIFS) was discussed [1]. The main feature of GNSIFS is that it can perform data exchange among a group of manufacturing systems, regardless of the operating systems or standards being used. Further research in this field shows that, to enhance the capability of GNSIFS, the database system of GNSIFS, which is considered to be the key constituent of the whole system, should consist of a relational data model that is to be complemented with a free format data model. In addition, the ‘reasoning’ capability of this information flow system can also be advanced if a Rule Knowledge DataBase (RKDB), together with the associated inference engine, can be included in the GNSIFS, resulting in the formation of a Hybrid Manufacturing Information System (HMIS) which manages the information flow from a combination of relational, free format and rule knowledge data models. This hybrid information management feature is favourable to the progressive advancement of the ‘reasoning’ nature of the system, and at the same time, has the benefit of relational data processing. This paper describes the architecture required for the formation of this Hybrid Manufacturing Information System (HMIS), and tests this system in a real company to evaluate its viability in an industrial environment.

Notes: Suspensions of nearly 100% viable golden hamster sperm were prepared by passing washed cauda epididymal sperm through a column of 0.25-0.3 mm glass beads. Incubations of these viable sperm under in vitro capacitation conditions in volumes of 0.1 or 1 ml (2-2.5 × 106/ml) resulted in 85-92% viable sperm after four hours and 45 minutes of incubation. More than 70% of these sperm were judged to have been capacitated after four hours and 45 minutes of incubation on the basis of their having undergone acrosome reactions and the presence of high numbers of sperm exhibiting the activated motility characteristic of capacitated hamster sperm. Thus, for the first time, procedures are available that will yield large numbers of viable capacitated sperm for biochemical analysis and that will also allow other studies of hamster sperm capacitation with minimum interference from molecules released from dead sperm.
