    Notes: In order to obtain 100% bi-epitaxial 45° grain boundary junctions of YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO), we have systematically examined the in-plane epitaxy of CeO2 films grown on MgO substrates. The inevitable presence of CeO2[110](parallel)MgO[100] causes mixtures of in-plane rotation of 0° and 45° between YBCO/CeO2/MgO and YBCO/MgO. We have further developed a new structure, namely YBCO/CeO2/Yttria-stabilized ZrO2/MgO and YBCO/MgO boundary, so that 100% in-plane rotation of 45° can be routinely obtained. The model of the in-plane epitaxial relationship between the multilayers using near coincident site lattices was proposed. The critical current density of the junctions made on the boundary is 3×103 A/cm2 at 77 K, while the order of the Jc of YBCO films on both sides of the grain boundary is 106 A/cm2. The current-voltage characteristics of the junctions show resistively shunted junction behavior. The better epitaxy of our new structure can lead to a better control of grain boundary critical current density. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Aims:  To investigate whether localization of β-catenin is helpful in differentiating primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma and colorectal adenocarcinoma metastatic to the ovary. Extra-ovarian cancers which metastasize to the ovaries, especially from colorectal adenocarcinoma, frequently mimic primary ovarian carcinomas, particularly endometrioid and mucinous types. Distinguishing primary ovarian carcinoma from metastatic colorectal carcinoma is important for both therapeutic and prognostic reasons. Even after thorough histological examination, metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas are still often mistaken for primary ovarian adenocarcinomas. Although some tumour makers have been advocated and are helpful in most cases, sometimes the distinction between primary mucinous carcinoma and metastatic colorectal carcinoma remains a problem. Activation of Wnt signalling through mutations of APC or β-catenin is a key event in the development of colorectal cancer. These mutations lead to nuclear localization of β-catenin, which can be demonstrated immunohistochemically.Methods and results:  Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens from 43 primary ovarian mucinous carcinomas and 23 metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas were included in this study. Sections were immunostained with antibodies to β-catenin, cytokeratin (CK)7, CK20 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Nuclear localization of β-catenin was found in 83% (19/23) of metastatic colorectal cancers and 9% (4/43) of ovarian mucinous carcinomas. Ovarian mucinous carcinomas were usually positive for CK7 (34/43, 79%). For comparison, 40 non-mucinous carcinomas of the ovary and 42 metastatic adenocarcinomas from other organs were also immunostained with antibodies against β-catenin. Although nuclear localization of β-catenin was occasionally seen in non-mucinous carcinoma of the ovary and metastatic adenocarcinoma from other organs, such tumours were usually distinguishable by their clinicopathological picture and rarely raised diagnostic problems.Conclusions:  Immunostaining of β-catenin is a useful marker for differentiating between ovarian mucinous carcinoma and metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma.

    Notes: We describe the implementation of a scanning Hall probe microscope of outstanding magnetic field sensitivity (∼0.1 G) and unprecedented spatial resolution (∼0.35 μm) to detect surface magnetic fields at close proximity to a sample. Our microscope combines the advantages of a submicron Hall probe fabricated on a GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As heterostructure chip and the scanning tunneling microscopy technique for precise positioning. We demonstrate its usefulness by imaging individual vortices in high Tc La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 films and superconducting networks, and magnetic bubble domains.

    Notes: Excellent quality La2−xSrxCuO4 epitaxial films of 0.07≤x≤0.34 in (001) and (103) orientations have been successfully grown in situ on SrTiO3, LaAlO3, and Y-stabilized ZrO2 substrates using 90° off-axis sputtering. A record low ion channeling minimal yield χmin of 1.9% is observed for the first time, and a χmin of 3% is routinely attained. The surface exhibits a featureless morphology under high-resolution scanning electron microscope, suggesting a roughness ≤30–40 A(ring). Superconductivity is maximized at Sr=0.15 with a typical Tc (R=0) of 35 K, a Jc (4.2 K) of 1–3×106 A/cm2, and a normal state resistivity two to three times lower than single crystals. Tc shows a marked reduction with thickness, and the results are interpreted on the basis of partially relieved strained-layer growth coupled with a sensitive dependence of Tc on uniaxial stress.

    Notes: The two fold degeneracy inherent to epitaxial growth of high Tc films on (101) perovskite substrates has been removed successfully. This is demonstrated by single domain, (103) oriented La2−xSrxCuO4 films of 0.04≤x≤0.34 on vicinal (101) SrTiO3 substrates using 90° off-axis sputtering. (101) substrates that have the surface normal rotated about [010] by 0.5°–3.5° produced essentially single crystal films with the c-axis direction determined by the sense of the miscut. Misoriented antidomains (103)' have been eliminated effectively to a percentage less than 1 part in 104. The mechanism for symmetry breaking is understood on the basis of a surface step model in which the energetics promoting single domain growth is derived from nucleation and epitaxy on the (001) face found at surface steps of vicinal substrates. Furthermore, the incommensuration of the c axis interplanar spacings with the a, b, plane lattice parameters in the La2−xSrxCuO4 structure provides a natural selection of (103) domains over (103)' domains. The model predicts the application to other high Tc materials such as the Bi2Sr2CanCun+1Ox, and the Tl2Ba2CanCun+1Ox families.

    Notes: Abstract High levels of arginase have been detected in gastric adenocarcinoma. To examine the hypothesis that this is due to macrophage infiltration into the tumour, we localized the cellular distribution of arginase by immunohistochemical staining. We examined gastric adenocarcinomas and their corresponding normal tissues (n=45), leiomyomas (n=2), leiomyosarcomas (n=3), human gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines (n=3), and benign gastric ulcers (n=4) by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique. Macrophages with strong arginase immunoreactivity were observed infiltrating both gastric normal and cancer tissues. No arginase immunoreactivity was observed in normal mucosal gland, muscular and serosal tissues or benign gastric ulcers. The immunoreactivity of arginase was positive but heterogeneous in most specimens of gastric adenocarcinoma (62.2%) and was absent from gastric intestinal metaplasia, leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas. Among the 28 neoplasms with arginase immunoreactivity, scattered immunoreactivity was also noted in adjacent dysplastic glands in 12 (42.8%) specimens. Arginase immunoreactivity was observed in all three gastric cancer cell lines. Arginase is present in the cytoplasm but not in the nucleus. These data suggest that the high arginase levels in adenocarcinoma cancer tissues originate largely from cancer cells.

    Notes: Abstract The normal state transport properties (resistivity, Hall effect) of La2−xSrxCuO4 have been studied over wide ranges of Sr doping and temperature. The familiar T-linear resistivity and the strongly T dependent Hall effect RH(T) are found only near the optimal hole concentration (x ≈ 0.15–0.18). The charge dynamics changes significantly in the non-superconducting overdoped range with RH(T) becoming constant above a characteristic temperature T*, and p(T) ∝ Tn (n 〉 1; n ≈ 1.5±0.1). The temperature scale T*, decreasing with increasing hole concentration, provides a link between transport and magnetic properties.
