Notizen: Summary We describe the range of phenotypes caused by cell death when larvae of the heat-sensitive cell-lethal mutant,l(1)ts726 ofDrosophila, are subjected to heat treatment at different stages of development. When the treatment extends into the pupal period, certain bristles fail to develop but the disc derivatives are otherwise normal. Earlier treatments cause the replacement of sets of leg and eye-antennal markers by mirror image duplications of neighbouring sets. The results are compared in detail with those expected under a gradient model proposed earlier to account for the phenotype. It is found that although the results for the second leg are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the model, a more elaborate hypothesis is necessary to account for the eye-antennal disc data. Abnormal head patterns fall into several distinct categories, any one of which could be explained by postulating the existence of a gradient, if other categories did not also occur. The markers affected in each case belong to overlapping sets, and each category of pattern can be induced by heat treatments administered throughout the temperature-sensitive period. The statistical distribution of the data is such that only one category of pattern would be detected in a small scale experiment. The possible implications relative to pattern formation in normal development are discussed.

Notizen: Both the logarithmic and derivative kernel integrations for potential problems, solved with quadratic isoparametric boundary elements, contain quartic functions of the integration parameter. It is shown that such functions can be written as the product of two quadratic functions with real coefficients. The derivative kernel integration is then represented as the sum of two integrals, which can be evaluated analytically. The logarithmic kernel integration can be similarly split but needs a Taylor series expansion of the Jacobian of the integration to enable analytical integration. The use of this Taylor series expansion means that the method presented is limited to problems involving weakly curved elements.

Notizen: A description is given of an adaptive finite element method for the simulation of two dimensional compressible flows with moving boundaries. The method is implemented on an unstructured triangular grid and the mesh adaptation is achieved by local grid regeneration, using an error estimation procedure coupled to an automatic triangular mesh generator. Two numerical examples are included to illustrate the numerical performance of the method.

Notizen: A fast algorithm is presented for constructing continuous lines, made up of element sides, which pass once through each node of a general unstructured triangular mesh and which are generally aligned in prescribed directions. The lines are used as the basis of an adaptive fully implicit unstructured grid procedure for the solution of two-dimensional problems of steady compressible inviscid and laminar viscous high-speed flows, where the equation system is solved by line relaxation using a block tridiagonal equation solver. For three-dimensional laminar viscous simulations it is proposed to utilize an implicit/explicit finite-element formulation. In the vicinity of solid walls a grid exhibiting structure in the normal direction is employed while, away from this region, the grid will be totally unstructured. In the structured region, lines in the normal direction to the wall are readily identified, while lines in the surfaces parallel to the solid wall are constructed using the proposed two-dimensional procedure. The implicit algorithm is then used in the structured region and the equation solution is achieved via line relaxation. An explicit form of the solution algorithm is used elsewhere. To illustrate the performance of the proposed method, solutions are obtained for both transonic inviscid and transonic and hypersonic laminar viscous problems in two dimensions. The application of the proposed procedure to the solution of three-dimensional hypersonic laminar viscous flow over a double ellipsoid configuration is also described.

Notizen: An adaptive finite element method for the solution of time dependent strongly compressible flows in two dimensions is described. The computational domain is represented by an unstructured assembly of linear triangular elements and the mesh adaptation is achieved by local regeneration of the grid, using an error estimation procedure coupled to an automatic triangular mesh generator. Problems involving shock propagation are solved to illustrate the numerical performance of the proposed approach.

Notizen: A low storage, computationally efficient algorithm for the solution of the compressible Euler equations on unstructured tetrahedral meshes is developed. The algorithm takes the form of a centred scheme with the explicit addition of a high accuracy artificial viscosity and the solution is advanced to steady state by means of a multi-stage time stepping method. The side based data structure which is employed enables a clear connection to be established between the proposed algorithm and upwind cell vertex schemes for unstructured meshes. The computational efficiency of the procedure is improved by incorporating an unstructured multigrid acceleration procedure. A number of flows of practical interest are analysed to demonstrate the numerical performance of the proposed approach.

Notizen: A two noded, straight element which includes shear deformation effects is presented and shown to be extremely efficient in the analysis of axisymmetric shells. A single point of numerical integration is essential for its success when applied to thin shells where the results compare favourably with those achieved with more complex curved elements.

Notizen: The algorithm in a earlier paper by Comini et al1 for handling the phase change in transient non-linear heat conduction problems is simplified and improved. Two examples involving phase change are solved using quadratic isoparametric elements and it is demonstrated that very good accuracy may be achieved.
