Summary Some of the enzymes of human adrenal cortex, especially the non-specific esterase and the acid phosphatase, disclose a functionally dependent distribution pattern which is opposite to that of the lipoids. Nodular hyperplasia in the adrenal cortex occurs in two forms: 1. There are the sub- and intracapsular nodular formations, which react very similarly to the remaining cortex in regard to their content of lipoids and enzymes; that is, they are functionally alike. 2. There are the intracortical nodular formations of hyperplasia which show various enzyme patterns. Often their lipoid content varies from that of the remaining cortex. Larger, endocrine inactive adenomas react similarly. In the endocrine active cortical adenomas, however, one finds different enzyme patterns of great variation which differ from that of the normal adrenal cortex, as well as from that of the non-endocrine active adenoma. The results indicate, that in the focal growth processes of the adrenal cortex in hyperplasia functional changes play an essential role. The degree of functional alteration appears to be decisive for further growth and for the functional consequences.
Notes:
