    Notes: Bilayers Nd-Fe/Cu and Nd-Fe/Al made by vacuum evaporation were studied. The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and reflectivity spectra were measured. For Nd-Fe/Cu with low Nd content and small thickness of Nd-Fe layer there is a peak in the MOKE spectrum and a broad MOKE enhancement. The position is located near the plasma edge of Cu. When the content of Nd exceeds 37 at. %, there is no Kerr peak in the MOKE spectrum of Nd-Fe/Cu. When the thickness of the magnetic layer is larger but still less than the light penetration depth, the position of the peak moves towards the long-wavelength side. For Nd-Fe/Al there is a broad enhancement in the short-wavelength region, but no Kerr peak occurs no matter how the magnetic layer changes. The results presented show that the necessary conditions for MOKE enhancement in bilayers are suitable values of n and k of the reflector, whether the reflector has a plasma edge or not, and the enhancement also depends on the properties of the magnetic layer.

    Notes: A theory as the basis for solving nonlinear boundary value problems is described. A new analysis is presented for nonlinear reflection, which reveals that there is a two-dimensional spatial increase of the second-harmonic wave. The accretion along the propagation direction is the result of the self-interaction of the primary wave; the one in the wave front is due to the boundary restriction.

    Notes: In this paper the magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation spectra of trilayers Fe/Ag/Cu, Fe/Cu/Ag, Fe/Au/Cu, and Fe/Cu/Au were measured and calculated. The experimental results coincided well with the calculated results. It was found that for trilayers Fe/Cu/Ag and Fe/Ag/Cu, with a 100 A(ring) thickness of the top Fe layer, there were two Kerr rotation peaks in their rotational magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra, located near 320 nm (the plasma edge of Ag) and 560 nm (the absorption edge of Cu). For Fe/Cu/Au and Fe/Au/Cu, with a 100 A(ring) thickness of the top Fe layer, there was only one Kerr rotation peak, which shifts slightly with the intermediate layer thickness. Trilayers Fe/Au/Cu and Fe/Cu/Au with suitable thickness of the top Fe layer are useful at present for magneto-optical storage with a read-out laser of long wavelength; Fe/Ag/Au and Fe/Cu/Ag will be useful in the future for magneto-optical storage with read-out laser of short wavelength.

    Notes: Bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au made by vacuum evaporation were studied. The magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and reflectivity spectra were measured in the region from 400 to 700 nm. In the magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra of bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au with the thickness of Fe layer less than the light penetration depth, there is a broad enhancement of the magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation with a Kerr peak near the plasma edge in the reflectivity spectra of Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys. The peak shifts toward the long wavelength side with increasing Cu and Au content in Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys, respectively. Our results show that the composition of the reflector in our bilayer structures can shift the wavelength range of the magneto-optical Kerr rotation enhancement. Interpretation and discussions are given.

    Notes: The giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effects in sandwiched Co/Cu/Co and Co/CuMn/Co structures have been investigated. The GMR oscillates with the spacer thickness for both cases, but is nearly antiphased. With diluted Mn atoms in the Cu spacer, the GMR curve as a function of the magnetic field changes a lot, and the saturation/switching field for GMR can be reduced greatly compared with that in Co/Cu/Co systems. This may indicate one way to obtain a highly sensitive GMR. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition has been observed in detail by electron-spin resonance (ESR) around the Curie temperature in a series of Nd0.7(Ca, Sr, Ba)0.3MnO3 with a fixed A-site mean radius 〈rA〉=1.21 Å. As A-site cation disorder σ2 increases, the ESR linewidth increases and the activation energy obtained from the ESR decreases, suggesting an increase of the local lattice distortions and a weakening of the ferromagnetic correlations with increasing σ2. ESR signals reveal that the A-site cation disorder causes the local microscopic inhomogeneity of the Mn oxidation state, which leads to the broad paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: For sputtered Co57Mn43/Si film samples with different ferromagnetic thickness, the spectra of the complex magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and optical constants were ex-situ measured. For 5 nm-thick Co57Mn43 film, the Kerr rotation around 4.3 eV was enhanced by a factor of about 10 times with lower loss of the signal intensity as compared to the thick film. Numerical calculations show that the enhancement effect is attributed to an interplay between optical properties of Co57Mn43 and substrate Si that has a strong interband transition (E2) near 4.3 eV. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magneto-optical and optical properties of GdFe single layer films, which are covered with a thin Si3N4 layer, were studied in the visible wavelength region. A Kerr rotation peak and a reflectivity drop were observed near 4.1 eV in GdFe alloyed films and attributed to the Gd element. Compared with the single thick GdFe film, the Kerr effect of SiN/GdFe bilayers was enhanced, due to the optical interference between Si3N4 and GdFe. The Kerr rotation of GdFe films showed a nonlinear function of the compositions in the whole measured wavelength range. Magneto-optical measurements directly evidence the spin–flip in the GdFe films as the Gd content increased from 20.7 to 24.2 at. %, which showed advantages over conventional magnetometry. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Cathepsin D is widely, but unevenly, distributed among cells and is capable of degrading a number of neural peptides and proteins. The present study was undertaken to examine the level of cathepsin D in astrocytes that might be relevant to its induction in inflammatory demyelination. Primary astrocytes were cultured from neonatal rat cerebrums according to the method of McCarthy and de Vellis. Based on staining for cell markers, cultures were 〉95% astrocytes and 〈3% microglia. Under serum-free conditions, leupeptin induced a 1.4- to 2.0-fold increase, maximal by 48 hours, in cathepsin D protein quantified by a radioimmunoassay. Cathepsin D enzymatic activity, inhibitable by pepstatin, also increased. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that leupeptin also increased cathepsin D mRNA expression. Kinetic analysis indicated that maximal cathepsin D mRNA levels are detected 24 h after stimulation with leupeptin. Exposure of astrocytes under the same conditions to rat recombinant interferon-γ, human recombinant tumor necrosis factor-α, human recombinant interleukin-1β, lipopolysaccharide, calcium ionophore, or a combination of these reagents did not increase the level of cathepsin D above controls. These results indicate that astrocytic cathepsin D mRNA and protein can be induced by selected materials. Furthermore, the effects attributed to leupeptin as a proteinase inhibitor may be modified by its ability to increase cathepsin D activity.

    Notes: Linear IgA disease is a subepidermal blistering disease characterized by IgA autoantibody deposition at the basement membrane zone of skin and mucosa. The antigens targeted in linear IgA disease have been defined by their molecular weight and localization. It has been proposed that a minority of linear IgA disease sera that bind to the dermal aspect of salt-split skin target collagen type VII. We have identified two patients with linear IgA disease using dermal binding IgA autoantibodies on salt-split skin which recognize collagen type VII by immunoblot analysis. The reactive epitope was destroyed by the proteolytic enzymes pepsin, which destroys the NC-1 domain of collagen type VII, and protease type VIII. Localization studies compared the IgA autoantibodies from these patients with the monoclonal antibody LH7.2 to the NC-1 domain of collagen type VII and showed colocalization on a dermal cylindroma tumour tissue, and a similar distribution with immunogold electron microscopy, using purified blister fluid from one patient. We propose from these results that the IgA autoantibodies from these two patients recognize the NC-1 domain of collagen type VII, the classical immunodominant epitope for epidermolysis bullosa acquisita.
