Notes: The influence of the crystal shape on the fine structure of transmission electron diffraction (TED) patterns described by the crystal shape amplitude is discussed. A general algebraic expression for the crystal shape amplitude of any crystal polyhedron is used for computing the intensity distribution of TED reflections. The computer simulation method is applied to the analysis of the fine structure of TED patterns of small gold and palladium crystals having octahedral and tetrahedral habits.

Notes: Abstract Absolute pionic x-ray intensities have been measured for Mg and Fe. The accuracy achieved was 2% of the line intensity for the most prominent transitions. In the Balmer series of Mg and the Paschen series of Fe the crossover transitions were found to be even more attenuated than the transitions between circular states, as deduced, for example, by comparison with muonic atoms; no crossover transitions were observed in the Fe Balmer series. According to cascade calculations based on the experimental intensities more than half of the pions are absorbed in Fe already from levels with principal quantum numbern〉17 by strong interaction.

Notes: Abstract The dissolution behaviour of two alloys, which represent the metallic precipitates, occurring in the dissolution step of a nuclear reprocessing plant was investigated. The solubility of these alloys, containing Mo, Ru, Rh and Pd, in HNO3-solutions is rather low and dissolution ceases after some time, caused by passivation. A significant acceleration of the dissolution rate takes place if ozone is passed through the alloy/HNO3-suspension, or if an electrolytic dissolver with or without an oxidation catalyst is used. Moreover, Ru can be separated as RuO4 by distillation.

Notes: Summary Considerably different transfer factors soil/plant are reported in literature for the fission product ruthenium. As ruthenium belongs to those radioactive nuclides, that could be released from a reprocessing plant during an accident, reliable transfer factors should be explored under middle-European conditions for some typical nutrition plants. In an artificial humous and sandy soil spiked with 106Ru as RuO2 and RuCl3, pasture grass was grown under artificial illumination in our laboratory. The amounts of ruthenium taken up by the plants were determined by γ-spectrometry. For open-air investigations with pasture grass, wheat and potatoes inactive ruthenium(III) chloride and ruthenium nitrosylchloride were used. Ruthenium was determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) after destroying the organic material and concentrating the solution. The concentration and chemical form of the ruthenium exert an unimportant influence on the transfer factor. For the pasture-grass, the stems of wheat and the weed of potatoes it amounts to 0.00005 to 0.0015, for the ear of wheat to about 0.00005. In peeled potatoes there was no ruthenium detectable, therefore the limit of detection leads to a transfer factor ≤0.00001. So it is evident that ruthenium is little available for the roots of the plants. In the event of an accident in a nuclear plant the uptake of radioactive ruthenium by roots has only negligible radioecological consequences. This applies even if 50 years of ruthenium enrichment in the soil are assumed.

Description / Table of Contents: Current carriers can cause currents after variation of the external electrical field, which depend on time just as relaxed dipols. The intensity and the position of the relaxation region and especially the nonlinear dependence between the stored charge and the external field are criterions for this. Blocking contacts cause relaxations of current carriers in poly(phenyl quinoxaline) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) samples. Detailed investigations of this phenomenon make possible informations on the density of the current carriers in the sample volume and on electrical properties of the contact region. Further ac-hopping is to be proved in poly(phenyl chinoxaline).
