Notes: Measurements of minority-carrier lifetime have been carried out on slices of n-type CdxHg1−xTe (0.2〈x〈0.3) prepared by both normal Bridgman and accelerated crucible rotation (ACRT) Bridgman techniques. Some of these crystals were deliberately doped with a high level of a single impurity. A study of aging effects has been concluded. Lifetime variations with temperature are explained using a combination of band-to-band and Shockley–Read recombination processes. Frequently, a single level 10–30 meV below the conduction-band edge was assumed, but for ACRT crystals it was necessary to postulate a second level. Attempts to identify the origin of the centers, by measurements on doped crystals, were only successful in the case of iron since it acts as a recombination center without providing conduction electrons in CdxHg1−xTe.

Notes: The results of photoluminescence analysis of ion-implanted and flash-annealed CdTe are reported here. Bound exciton lines in the spectrum of the CdTe were used to study the annealing of implantation-induced damage in the crystal. The intensity and width of these lines are a very good indicator of variations in lattice strain. Optimum flash annealing conditions were found to depend on both the energy and the dose of the implant. The photoluminescence indicates that flash annealing can provide complete annealing of the crystal damage following implantation. Implanting Cu or B ions into the lattice did not, however, lead to significant variations in the spectrum of the samples as compared to annealed, unimplanted samples. A comparison of flash and furnace annealing was made.

Notes: Cu diffusion into CdTe was investigated. Diffusions were carried out at 325 °C for 170 h under vacuum, starting with a surface deposition. The Cu diffusion caused a reduction in the band-edge photoluminescence intensity of the crystals. Hall data indicate that the Cu also inhibited the formation of acceptor states in the lattice during the 325 °C thermal treatment. The luminescence intensity is partially restored by a 2 h, 700 °C anneal under inert gas atmosphere. The spectral features in the exciton region of the spectrum are not significantly changed by the doping, and appear to be dominated by the annealing process itself rather than by the Cu introduced into the crystal. This is in contrast to previously reported data associating Cu doping with increases in the intensity of the 1.5896-eV bound-exciton line. Cathodoluminescence and infrared microscopy indicate that the Cu did not form precipitates or supersaturated areas along defects, as has been previously reported by other workers as the cause of the overall decrease in luminescence intensity with Cu diffusion.

Notes: The complex admittance of an n-type Hg1−xCdxTe/Photox SiO2 interface with x=0.3 has been examined for frequencies ranging between 1 mHz and 4 MHz. The conductance method is used to decompose the total interface state density into three types of components: a valence-band tail, a conduction-band tail, and some well-resolved discrete states. The fixed charge density is low and there is no statistical broadening. The surface valence- and conduction-band edges are both found to be shifted upward in energy relative to their respective bulk values; moreover, the surface has converted to p type. The energy variation of the valence-band tail states response times follows a pattern characteristic of Shockley–Read recombination centers with a constant capture cross section, but the behavior of the conduction-band tail states is more complicated. Evidence is presented that the interface region has a higher Cd concentration than the bulk.

Notes: Beam from the accelerator for research was available for a total period of 3900 h last year and unscheduled maintenance time was reduced by a factor of almost 2. An arc discharge tube conditioning test was conducted on the top five units of the accelerator and a test with macropulsed beam was accomplished. The main problems during the year were vacuum leaks and voltage "tics.''

Notes: A randomised prospective study was carried out in children undergoing surgery for squint correction, to determine the value of controlled ventilation as a prophylaxis against the occurrence of the oculocardiac reflex. One hundred patients anaesthetised with nitrous oxideloxygen and halothane were randomly assigned to either ventilated or spontaneously breathing groups of 50 each. Half the patients in each group received glycopyrronium 7.5 μg/kg intravenously at the time of induction of anaesthesia. Heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure and end tidal CO2 concentration were monitored throughout. A positive oculocardiac reflex. defined as a fall in heart rate of 20% or more and/or the occurrence of dysrhythmias, was observed in 72% of spontaneously breathing patients and in 100% of ventilated patients not receiving prophylactic intravenous glycopyrronium. The incidence of a positive reflex in patients receiving glycopyrronium was 10% (4 and 16% respectively in spontaneously breathing and ventilated patients). It is concluded that controlled ventilation is of no value as a preventive measure against the occurrence of the oculocardiac reflex in patients undergoing squint surgery and that prophylaxis is safely achieved with the use of intravenous glycopyrronium.

Notes: Abstract Previous reports that whole cells of Methylophilus methylotrophus oxidase exogenous NADH have been investigated. Essentially identical rates of oxygen consumption were observed following the addition of methanol or NADH to whole cells. Both activities were inhibited by EDTA and hydroxylamine, but not by HQNO, and exhibited similar pH optima. Analyses of the reaction stoichiometry with NADH as substrate showed that the expected amount of oxygen was consumed, but also revealed acidification (instead of alkalinisation) and no oxidation of NADH. Further studies showed that commerical NADH is contaminated with ethanol which is oxidised to acetic acid by the low specificity methanol oxidase system present in this organism. The oxidation of exogenous NADH by whole cells of M. methylotrophus reported previously is therefore spurious.

Notes: Abstract Laser chemical vapor deposition of copper has been performed under a variety of conditions. The results are interpreted using the kinetic model of Ehrlich and Tsao. We find that the kinetics of the process are limited by the rates of surface reactions and not by diffusion of reactant molecules to the surface. Furthermore, we find that deposit shapes are quite sensitive to laser intensity and scan rate.
