    Notes: We present preliminary results of a study of defects in GaAs-AlGaAs superlattices using deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). A dramatic difference is observed between the DLTS spectra of two superlattices when the superlattice period is doubled. This is explained by the presence of miniband conduction in the case of the smaller period and its absence in the case of the larger, and by the consequent difference in the distribution of electrons in the superlattice. Observed activation energies must be reinterpreted for comparisons to bulk material.

    Notes: The design and construction of a cryogenic electron beam ion source is in progress at Kansas State University. In about two years this source should produce high yields of bare and few-electron argon ions with low kinetic energies (∼keV–MeV). The design is similar to the latest French designs {CRYEBIS II [J. Arianer, C. Goldstein, H. Laurent, and M. Malard, IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci. NS-30, 2737 (1983)] and DIONE [B. Gastineau, J. Faure, and A. Courtois, Nucl. Instrum. Methods B9, 538 (1985)]}. However, several significant changes were incorporated in order to get a simpler and more flexible design. The key factors of the operation which are expected to limit the performance are discussed. The general design is outlined which allows significant future upgrading to obtain nongaseous as well as much heavier, highly ionized ions.

    Notes: Summary Several previous studies have suggested a strong GABA-mimetic action of the endogenous brain imino acid, L-pipecolic acid (L-PA). In the present study, these observations were evaluated using electrophysiological and neurochemical methods. In contrast to published data our electrophysiological studies on rat cortical neuronesin situ showed only a weak, but bicuculline-sensitive depressant action of L-PA on cortical neurones. Furthermore, L-PA proved to have no affinity for any of the three components of the GABA-benzodiazepine-chloride channel receptor complex. However, using a modification of published methods a weak affinity for the GABA-B receptor site was demonstrated (IC50=1.8×10−3 M). L-PA showed no anticonvulsive activity in several tests; in particular, it did not protect mice from seizures induced by inhibition of L-glutamate-1-decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.15: GAD). L-PA had a very weak action on brain GABA levels of mice, and did not modify the rate of GABA synthesis. In conclusion, these results are not compatible with a strongin vivo interaction between L-PA and GABA-mediated inhibitory transmission.

    Notes: Abstract Gastric antisecretory phenothiazine LM24056 inhibited acid and pepsin responses to feeding in dogs. Administered perorally two hours before feeding, LM 24056 reduced significantly the secretory responses to combinations of feeding either with antramine, a natural histamine derivate, or with synthetic histamine. LM24056 reduced circulating gastrin levels (p〈0.01 and p〈0.001) and gastrin responses to feeding (p〈0.01) without modifying neither circulating histamine concentrations nor histamine responses to feeding. The residual acid and pepsin secretions were closely related to gastrin reduction and endogenous or exogenous histamine, by themselves, seemed to be unable to recover the levels of secretory responses observed in response to feeding alone or in combination with antramine or histamine. These data favour a new scheme of gastric secretion regulation where gastrin would be the last step for stimulating parietal and chief cells. LM 24056 by reducing circulating gastrin prevents stimulatory effect of exogenous or feeding-released endogenous histamine. Histamine would not be thus the final common mediator for gastric secretion.

    Notes: Summary The morphology of retinal ganglion cells which project to different parts of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (DLG) in the hooded rat has been investigated. Small amounts of a retrograde tracer (horseradish peroxidase) were injected into the DLG, then labelled retinal ganglion cells were examined in retinal wholemounts. After injections into different parts of the DLG, differences were noted in the size, morphology and retinal distribution of labelled retinal ganglion cells. Specifically, after injections into the antero-ventral part of the DLG labelled retinal ganglion cells were spread sparsely across the retina, had large cell somas, and many were identified with Class I or Class III morphology. After injections into the postero-dorsal part of the DLG, labelled cells were more densely packed, had smaller somas, and more were identified with Class IIa and Class III morphology. The density of labelled cells was estimated to be no more than 37% of the total retinal ganglion cell density at any retinal position examined. These results show that in the rat, as in other species such as the cat or monkey, the terminals of different classes of retinal ganglion cells are segregated within different subdivisions of the DLG. However, unlike these other species, only a minority of the total retinal ganglion cell population projects to the DLG.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was undertaken to investigate the possible involvement of a noradrenergic and opioid mediation of the reversal by tricyclic antidepressants of escape deficits produced by inescapable shock pretreatment. Rats were first exposed to 60 inescapable shocks (15 s duration, 0.8 mA, every min±15 s) and 48 h later subjected, to daily shuttle-box sessions (30 trials/day, ITI: 30 s) during 3 consecutive days. Twice-daily IP injection of desipramine or clomipramine (total daily dose: 32 mg/kg) prevented escape deficits. Penbutolol (0.125; 0.25; 0.5 mg/kg), prazosin (1; 2 mg/kg) and naloxone (0.5; 1 mg/kg) given once a day dose-dependently attenuated the beneficial effect of tricyclic antidepressants in reducing the number of escape failures in rats exposed to shock pretreatment. In agreement with data obtained in the forced-swimming model, these findings support the notion that activation of noradrenergic and opioid receptors is an important factor in the mediation of the effects of tricyclic antidepressants in animal models of depression.

    Notes: Abstract The optical properties of the dielectric oxide films SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, CeO2 and Ta2O5 produced by ion-based techniques have been reviewed. The influence of ion bombardment during deposition is discussed in some detail and the various production techniques are described. Recent results on the deposition and properties of diamond-like carbon films are also reviewed. Finally, some examples of the practical applications of high quality dielectric oxide films are given.
