Notes: In1−xGaxSb1−yBiy (0〈x≤0.21, 0〈y≤0.005) quaternary bulk single crystals were grown on InSb seed crystals using a rotary Bridgman method. In order to investigate the quality of these crystals, various kinds of measurements were carried out, such as optical microscope, x-ray topograph, four-crystal x-ray diffractometry, electron-probe microanalysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and secondary-ion-mass spectroscopy. All grown crystals were 10 mm in diameter and more than 10 mm in length. This indicates that the rotary Bridgman method was useful to grow quaternary bulk single crystals. Owing to segregation, the compositional ratio of Bi (y) increased and that of Ga (x) decreased as crystals grew. During growth of InGaSbBi, both Ga and Bi diffused into the InSb seed and there appeared domains of InBi. For comparison, InSb1−yBiy (0〈y≤0.05) and In1−xGaxSb (0〈x≤0.16) were grown on InSb. It turned out that Bi did not diffuse into InSb without Ga, but Ga diffused without Bi. The incorporation of Ga produced the excess In and as a result InBi domains were formed.

Notes: The interface disorder in quantum wells (QW's) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on 0.5°-misoriented (111)B GaAs substrates was characterized by low-temperature photoluminescence and by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the abruptness of the heterointerface of (111)B QW's is as sharp as that of (100) QW's. The effect of growth interruption at a high substrate temperature of 720 °C on the interface disorder was also studied and was found to be detrimental.

Notes: Amorphous silicon alloyed p-i-n solar cells have been fabricated using a separate chamber photochemical vapor deposition system. The photocharacteristics of such cells have been modestly improved by the addition of a carbon-alloyed graded-band-gap layer at the p(a-SiC:H)/i(a-Si:H) heterointerface. The best efficiency obtained for a glass/TCO (transparent conductive oxide)/p(a-SiC:H)/i(a-Si:H)/n(μc-Si:H)/metal structure of this type was 11.2% for a 3×3 mm2 cell; other parameters were Voc=0.882 V, Isc=18.05 mA/cm2, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.702.

Notes: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a radical-scavenging enzyme. We determined Cu, Zn-SOD concentrations and activities in platelets from subjects with migraine and tension-type headaches. Thirty migraine without aura (MWoA) patients, 9 migraine with aura (MWA) patients, and 53 tension-type headache patients were selected for study. Thirty healthy volunteers composed the control group. Concentrations of platelet SOD were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay techniques. The activity of platelet SOD was determined by measuring reductivity of nitroblue tetrazolium. Low concentrations of platelet SOD were found in patients with MWA and MWoA. Platelet SOD activity decreased in MWA patients but not in patients with MWoA or tension-type headaches. These findings suggest vulnerability to oxidative stress in patients with migraine. It is suggested that low platelet SOD levels may play an important role in the etiology of migraine.

Notes: In order to examine the transverse distribution of scattered light and chlorophyll fluorescence in intact rice leaves, a micro-fluorescence imaging system was devised using a microscope, a CCD camera with an image intensifier, an Ar and a He-Ne laser light source, an image processor, and a microcomputer. A laser light was projected vertically on to the surface of a rice leaf segment at a cut-edge, and scattered light and induced fluorescence were observed at the cut-section from a 90° angle to the axis of the laser beam. The intensity of scattered light showed a maximum at several micrometres depth from the leaf surface and a steep gradient afterwards. Fluorescence reached a maximum crossing with the decline curve of the scattered light. The maximum of fluorescence measured at 741 nm was observed at a greater depth from the leaf surface than that at 687 nm, suggesting that part of the fluorescence of the longer wavelength was emitted due to absorption of fluorescence of the shorter wavelength. Profiles of the scattered light and the chlorophyll fluorescence depended on leaf anatomy.

Notes: Abstract. Studies were conducted to clarify the relationship between growth rate and disease progression of erythrocytic inclusion body syndrome (EIBS) in artificially infected coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum). In the diseased state, the haematocrit values decreased and the number of erythrocytes with inclusions was higher in faster growing fish. Rapid growth was accompanied by an abundance of immature erythrocytes, which had the greatest incidence of inclusion bodies.

Notes: The monoclonal antibody LH7:2, which recognizes type VII collagen, is now used in the diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica. We constructed the expression vector which contains the cDNA fragment of type VII collagen. Western blot with LH7:2 was carried out with the resultant fusion proteins which overlap each other, and we found that reactivity is located in the central region of the N-terminal non-collagenous domain of type VII collagen, at a position 81 kDa upstream from the collagenous domain. This epitope mapping for LH7:2 may be useful in studying the role of type VII collagen in epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica.

Notes: Summary Alzheimer's neurofibrillary tangles (ANT) in the hippocampal area were studied immunohistochemically using antisera against glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S-100 protein in 48 patients with or without dementia between 52 and 92 years old. In 27 of the 38 brains that developed ANT in the hippocampal area, some ANT were immunostained with these antisera. Flame-shaped or globose-shaped immunostains were occasionally continuous with astroglial cell bodies and processes. They appeared particularly in the entorhinal cortex, subiculum and CAl. The ANT, immunostained with GFAP and S-100 antisera, apparently correspond to slightly eosinophilic tangles in H&E sections and to less argentophilic tangles in silver-impregnated sections in all of the 27 brains. ANT of another 11 brains were consistently negative with these antisera. The GFAP-positive eosinophilic tangles were encountered in the brains of older patients (P〈0.01) and with more abundant formation of ANT (P〈0.001). This alteration was present in all of the 20 brains with more than 100 ANT per section and none of the eight brains with less than 10 ANT. These findings suggest that in the last stages, ANT are penetrated by eosinophilic processes of astrocytes, and appear eosinophilic, and that the presence of GFAP-positive eosinophilic tangles indicates the abundant formation of ANT.

Notes: Abstract Crystal-orientation dependence in photoconductive Pb2CrO5 thin film devices, prepared by an electron-beam evaporation deposition technique, with interdigital electrodes is described as functions of film thicknesses, temperature, and electrode widths. There are three types of orientations of (020), (310), and (200). The photoconductive sensitivity of (200) is smaller than the other orientations because of the lower carrier mobility. The observed activation energy for each oriented sample is 0.69 or 0.26 eV for the dark or the photoillumination state. The film thickness influences strongly the photoconductive sensitivity and spectrum. At the shorter wavelengths the difference of the photoconductive current due to the illumination direction is obvious. The ratio of the finger width to the gap of interdigital electrodes on the thin film affects the photoconductive current level without changing the photoconductive spectra.
