Notes: Films have been preprared by sputtering over a wide range of compositions in the Fe-B-F system. Fluorine was supplied by rf sputtering from an FeF3 target, and Fe-B by dc sputtering from arc-melted targets. Most of the samples were amorphous, although some contained a relatively small fraction of crystalline FeF2. The films were ferromagnetic, with Curie temperatures above room temperature and with room-temperature saturation magnetizations of 60 to 150 emu/g. Large Faraday coefficients, up to 105 deg/cm at 633 nm and fairly large Kerr rotations were observed.

Notes: Summary In order to clarify the stage of abnormal activation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) B cells, we investigated the cell-cycle phase of SLE B cells by flow-cytometric analysis. This study uses the simultaneous flow-cytometric analysis of cellular DNA content and incorporated bromodeoxyuridine, an analogue of thymidine, as indicators for DNA synthesis to detect activated B cells in peripheral blood of patients with SLE. In active SLE, the percentage of B cells increased in the S and G2M phase and decreased in the G0G1 phase as compared with normal control subjects. In inactive SLE, the percentage of B cells in the S phase also increased. Active SLE B cells did not progress through the cell cycle with the stimulation of anti-IgM plus PMA or SAC plus BSF, although normal B cells transit into S and G2M phase with such stimulation. These data suggest that SLE B cells are already activated and shifted to a matured state and that for this reason the B cells were poorly responsive to mitogen.

Notes: Abstract The solubilities of o-, m- and p-xylene in water were measured at 25.0°C up to 250, 385, and 50 MPa, respectively. The solubility increased with increasing pressure up to 120 MPa (50 MPa for p-xylene) and then decreased. The reaction volumes, ΔVo accompanying the dissolution at 0.1 MPa were estimated as −3.6±0.5, −3.4±0.5, and −4.1±0.5 cm3-mol−1 for o-, m-, and p-xylene, respectively, from the pressure dependences of the solubilities. The limiting partial molar volumes, of p- and o-xylene in water under high pressure were estimated from ΔVo and the molar volume of the xylene. The partial molar volumes decreased with increasing pressure. The reaction volume for the formation of intra-molecular pairwise hydrophobic interaction between the methyl groups, as proposed by Ben-Naim, is discussed for the ΔVo of p- and o-xylene at 0.1 MPa.

Notes: Abstract The near-infrared absorption spectra (9500 to 11000 cm−1) of HOD, 20 mol% in D2O were measured at temperatures between 4 and 55°C and pressures up to 500 MPa. From the analysis of the spectra, the following conclusions are drawn. (1) At temperatures below about 38°C, the ice I-like bulky structure is destroyed to form the dense structure which reflects the high-pressure ice-like structure as the pressure is increased. (2) At temperatures above about 38°C, the bulky structure hardly remains at atmospheric pressure and the formation of dense structure proceeds monotonically with increasing pressure. The results and conclusion obtained in the present paper agrees with those obtained for pure H2O water in the previous investigation.

Notes: Summary An autopsy case of adult neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis was examined. The clinical picture was charaterized by gait disturbance, bulbar palsy and dementia. Histopathologically, diffuse neuronal loss was found throughout the central nervous system. The remaining neurons, predominantly in the motor nuclei of the spinal cord and brain stem, were swollen with storage material. Observed under the electron microscope the storage material showed various ultrastructures, such as lipofuscin-like bodies, pleomorphic lipid bodies, curvilinear profiles and finger-print profiles, in different regions of the central nervous system. In the ballooned neurons of the spinal anterior horn, many membranous cytoplasmic bodies and curvilinear profiles were intermingled within the same cell and were continuous with each other. Biochemically,N-acetyl neuraminic acid content was significantly increased in the spinal anterior horn. These findings suggest the localized increase of ganglioside in that region.

Notes: Summary Gram-positive bacteria isolated from deep-sea sediments of the Pacific basin showed considerable antibacterial activity. ABacillus strain, isolated from a sediment sample collected at a depth of 4310 m, was shown to produce 3-amino-3-deoxy-D-glucose, a known antibiotic.

Notes: Summary We describe a new autoradiographic technique for differentially demonstrating the presence of trace amounts of cadmium that remains unbound to metallothionein in tissue sections. This procedure involves [14C-1,4,5,8--naphthol]-1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (TAN) instead of a metal radioisotope. Tissue sections were stained using labeled TAN, and were then subjected to routine autoradiographic procedures. The results obtained indicated that the distribution of photographic grains truly reflected the distribution of metallothionein-unbound Cd in the sections. This demonstrates the suitability of this procedure for the differential demonstration of cadmium present in different chemical forms in tissues.

Notes: Summary To investigate the possibility that delection en bloc in the HLA region had caused the combined deficiency of neuraminidase and 21-hydroxylase in a female patient, genetic markers on the short arm of chromosome 6 were examined in the patient and her parents, and 21-hydroxylase genes of the patient were analyzed by the Southern blot technique. The affected “extended haplotype” identical by descent might have been recombined at two sites, between HLA-A and C and between HLA-DQ and GLO. This suggests that the neuraminidase gene is mapped between HLA-A and GLO. Southern blot analysis revealed the existence of two 21-hydroxylase genes, so that we found no evidence to support the possibility that deletion en bloc in the HLA class III region had caused the combined deficiency of neuraminidase and 21-hydroxylase.

Notes: Abstract The amino acid sequences of two subunits (80K and 30K) of calcium-activated neutral protease (CANP) were examined to clarify the structure-function relationship of CANP. The 80K subunit is composed of four clear domains (I–IV from the N-terminus). Domain II is a cysteine proteinase domain homologous to cathepsins B, L, and H. Domain IV is a calcium binding domain with four consecutive EF-hand structures known as typical calcium-binding sites found in calmodulin. The 30K subunit also has a clear domain structure (two domains). The N-terminal domain, a Gly-rich hydrophobic domain, probably determines the location of CANP through association with cellular membrane. The C-terminal domain is a calmodulinlike calcium-binding domain highly homologous to IV in the 80K subunit. The protease activity ascribable to II is regulated by 2 moles of built-in “calmodulins,” though its precise regulation mechanism is unknown. These results are discussed together with the molecular evolution of CANP on the basis of the gene structures of the two subunits.

Notes: Highly wettable films were prepared by plasma-polymerization from ethylene oxide. The surface energy of the formed films is 65.6 dyn/cm, and the contact-angle of water on the films is 12 degrees. The formation of highly wettable films is limited to the plasma-polymerization conducted at low W/FM values of below 200 MJ/kg. Analyses by infrared spectroscopy and ESCA show that the formed films contain much oxygen residues such as C—O, C—O, and C(O)—O— groups. Such polar groups would contribute high wettability of the plasma-films from ethylene oxide.
