Notes: In1−xGaxSb1−yBiy (0〈x≤0.21, 0〈y≤0.005) quaternary bulk single crystals were grown on InSb seed crystals using a rotary Bridgman method. In order to investigate the quality of these crystals, various kinds of measurements were carried out, such as optical microscope, x-ray topograph, four-crystal x-ray diffractometry, electron-probe microanalysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and secondary-ion-mass spectroscopy. All grown crystals were 10 mm in diameter and more than 10 mm in length. This indicates that the rotary Bridgman method was useful to grow quaternary bulk single crystals. Owing to segregation, the compositional ratio of Bi (y) increased and that of Ga (x) decreased as crystals grew. During growth of InGaSbBi, both Ga and Bi diffused into the InSb seed and there appeared domains of InBi. For comparison, InSb1−yBiy (0〈y≤0.05) and In1−xGaxSb (0〈x≤0.16) were grown on InSb. It turned out that Bi did not diffuse into InSb without Ga, but Ga diffused without Bi. The incorporation of Ga produced the excess In and as a result InBi domains were formed.

Notes: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a radical-scavenging enzyme. We determined Cu, Zn-SOD concentrations and activities in platelets from subjects with migraine and tension-type headaches. Thirty migraine without aura (MWoA) patients, 9 migraine with aura (MWA) patients, and 53 tension-type headache patients were selected for study. Thirty healthy volunteers composed the control group. Concentrations of platelet SOD were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay techniques. The activity of platelet SOD was determined by measuring reductivity of nitroblue tetrazolium. Low concentrations of platelet SOD were found in patients with MWA and MWoA. Platelet SOD activity decreased in MWA patients but not in patients with MWoA or tension-type headaches. These findings suggest vulnerability to oxidative stress in patients with migraine. It is suggested that low platelet SOD levels may play an important role in the etiology of migraine.

Notes: In order to examine the transverse distribution of scattered light and chlorophyll fluorescence in intact rice leaves, a micro-fluorescence imaging system was devised using a microscope, a CCD camera with an image intensifier, an Ar and a He-Ne laser light source, an image processor, and a microcomputer. A laser light was projected vertically on to the surface of a rice leaf segment at a cut-edge, and scattered light and induced fluorescence were observed at the cut-section from a 90° angle to the axis of the laser beam. The intensity of scattered light showed a maximum at several micrometres depth from the leaf surface and a steep gradient afterwards. Fluorescence reached a maximum crossing with the decline curve of the scattered light. The maximum of fluorescence measured at 741 nm was observed at a greater depth from the leaf surface than that at 687 nm, suggesting that part of the fluorescence of the longer wavelength was emitted due to absorption of fluorescence of the shorter wavelength. Profiles of the scattered light and the chlorophyll fluorescence depended on leaf anatomy.

Notes: Abstract. Studies were conducted to clarify the relationship between growth rate and disease progression of erythrocytic inclusion body syndrome (EIBS) in artificially infected coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum). In the diseased state, the haematocrit values decreased and the number of erythrocytes with inclusions was higher in faster growing fish. Rapid growth was accompanied by an abundance of immature erythrocytes, which had the greatest incidence of inclusion bodies.

Notes: The monoclonal antibody LH7:2, which recognizes type VII collagen, is now used in the diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica. We constructed the expression vector which contains the cDNA fragment of type VII collagen. Western blot with LH7:2 was carried out with the resultant fusion proteins which overlap each other, and we found that reactivity is located in the central region of the N-terminal non-collagenous domain of type VII collagen, at a position 81 kDa upstream from the collagenous domain. This epitope mapping for LH7:2 may be useful in studying the role of type VII collagen in epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica.

Notes: Abstract Ca2+-activated K+ channels play an important role in Ca2+ signal transduction and may be regulated by mechanisms other than a direct effect of Ca2+. Inside-out patches of the apical membrane of confluent transformed rabbit cortical collecting duct cells cultured on collagen were subjected to patch clamp analysis. Two types of K+ channel, of medium and high conductance, were observed. The latter channel was characterized by a K+/Na+ permeability ratio of 10, an inwardly rectified current, a conductance of 80 pS at 0 mV, and an open probability dependent on both voltage and Ca2+. Guanosine 5′-triphosphate (GTP) but not a guanosine 5′-diphosphate (GDP) analogue, adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP), cytidine 5′-triphosphate (CTP), or inosine 5′-triphosphate (ITP), inhibited the activity of this Ca2+-activated K+ channel. The inhibitory effect of GTP was dose dependent, with a 50% inhibitory concentration of 10−5 m in the absence of Mg2+. In the presence of Mg2+ (1 mm), which is required for the binding of GTP to G proteins, the 50% inhibitory concentration decreased to 3×10−12 m. Pertussis toxin or cholera toxin (each at 10 ng/ml) did not prevent the inhibitory effect of GTP. After removal of GTP from the medium bathing an inhibited channel, subsequent application of Ca2+ failed to activate the channel. Ca2+-activated K+ channels of smooth muscle cells and proximal tubule cells did not respond to GTP. Thus, the Ca2+-activated K+ channel in the apical membrane of collecting duct cells is inhibited by GTP, which appears to exert its effect via a G protein that is insensitive to both cholera and pertussis toxins.

Notes: Summary The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of neonatal alterations in 5-HT signalling on the regulation of endocrine stress response in adult rats. The neonatal blockade of 5-HT transmission by 5,7-DHT or ritanserin treatment did not alter the density of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) binding sites in the hippocampus, although a 5,7-DHT-induced lesion was clearly shown to decrease in 5-HT content by greater than 80% in the hippocampus. In addition, the animals pretreated with the blockade of 5-HT transmission during early life did not exhibit a hyperresponsiveness of the adrenocortical response to stress. On the other hand, the neonatal administration of the 5-HT uptake inhibitor, clomipramine, was shown to lower the stress responsiveness of the adrenocortical axis in adulthood.

Notes: Abstract The damping performance of a unidirectional (0 °) nylon 6-carbon fibre (NY-6/CF) commingled yarn composite was experimentally studied with special concern for the effect of moisture absorption. Dried specimens were immersed in distilled water for a certain time to allow water to diffuse into the material. The damping measurements were conducted on double-cantilever and cantilever beam specimens using sinusoidal and impact-hammering techniques. The damping loss factor η, flexural dynamic stiffness E′ and loss modulus E″ were evaluated as a function of the moisture content up to 8.2 wt %. η and E″ initially increased significantly with increasing moisture content up to 5–6%. Further increase of the moisture content up to 8.2% caused a slight reduction in damping ability. The reverse was true of E′ although the variation amplitude was smaller. The moisture content dependency of the damping performance obtained is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The fracture toughness and uniaxial tensile yield strengths of unmodified and CTBN-rubber-modified epoxies were measured under hydrostatic pressure. The purpose of these experiments was to learn how suppressing cavitation in rubber particles affects the deformation mechanisms and the fracture toughness of rubber-modified epoxy. It was found that the cavitation of CTBN-rubber could be suppressed at a relatively low pressure (between 30 and 38 M Pa). With cavitation suppressed, the rubber particles are unable to induce massive shearyielding in the epoxy matrix, and the fracture toughness of the rubber-modified epoxy is no higher than that of the unmodified epoxy in the pressure range studied. Unmodified epoxy shows a brittle-to-ductile transition in fracture toughness test. The reason for this transition is the postponement of the cracking process by applied pressure.
