Notes: Abstract A valine-resistant mutant line, VAL-2, of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. was identified by screening M 2 populations of ethylmethane-sulfonate-mutagenized seeds. The resistance was found to be due to a single, dominant, nuclear gene mutation. Assay of acetolactate synthase (ALS) indicated that the valine resistance in this mutant is caused by decreased sensitivity of ALS to the branched-chain amino acids, valine, leucine and isoleucine. A two fold decrease in apparent K m value for pyruvate of the mutant ALS enzyme was detected compared with that of the wild type. The sensitivity of the ALS enzyme to sulfonylurea, imidazolinone and triazolopyrimidine herbicides was not altered in the mutant. At the plant growth level the mutant was also resistant to valine plus leucine, but was sensitive to leucine or isoleucine alone. The mutant gene, var1, maps, or is very closely linked, to CSR1, the gene encoding acetolactate synthase in Arabidopsis.

Notes: Abstract The submerged flora of selected areas of Lough Corrib was examined in July, 1986. Plant assemblages are described in relation to local geology, topography and water chemistry. The impact of cultural eutrophication on the aquatic flora is discussed. Reference is made to some notable features of the Irish aquatic flora, as exemplified by Lough Corrib.

Notes: Abstract We have performed resistance measurements on thin films of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) in applied magnetic fields to above 200 T (2 MegaOersted) at temperatures as low as 2.5 K. The fields are produced by an explosively driven flux-compression system. We can see a particularly clear onset, without replotting the data, of the “hydrodynamic” flow of vortices probably because of the very fast increasing field. The low-temperature “critical field” for the field parallel to the c-axis of the sample is 135 T. Our data in the other direction are still preliminary. We discuss possible interpretation of our results.

Notes: Abstract We present eddy-correlation measurements of heat and water vapour fluxes made during the Antarctic winter. The surface layer was stably stratified throughout the period of observation and sensible heat fluxes were always directed downwards. However, both upward and downward water vapour fluxes were observed. Their magnitude was generally small and the latent heat flux was not a significant fraction of the surface energy budget. The variation of heat and water vapour fluxes with stability is well described by Monin-Obukhov similarity theory but the scalar roughness lengths for heat and water vapour appear to be much larger than the momentum roughness length. Possible explanations of this effect are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the upper critical fieldH C2(T) of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) thin films in magnetic fields up to 140 T forH applied parallel to thec-axis of the film. The critical field in the zero-temperature limit is 138 T, and the temperature dependence does not fit any simple model.

Notes: Abstract The ageing response of 2124 Al-SiC particulate metal-matrix composite (MMC) and unreinforced alloy has been examined using hardness measurements and Arrhenius analysis. The formation of phases during precipitation has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The MMC exhibits accelerated ageing compared to unreinforced alloy, due to enhanced S′ formation. The activation energy for diffusion is lower in the MMC than in the unreinforced alloy. DSC scans show Guinier-Preston B (GPB) zone nucleation to occur at a lower temperature in the MMC, whilst the total volume of GPB zones formed is smaller than in the unreinforced alloy. A model has been proposed to explain the GPB zone formation behaviour, in which ease of GPB zone nucleation varies within the MMC, as a function of ageing time and of position within the matrix. S′ formation is enhanced in the MMC because of improved diffusion and a large increase in density of heterogeneous nucleation sites compared to the unreinforced alloy.
