    Notes: Transconductance oscillations were observed for silicon-on-insulator metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors with 50 nm channel length and 6 nm Si-layer thickness in the temperature range of 39–50 K. By investigating the temperature dependence of the oscillations it was found that the oscillations were caused by two reasons. One reason is the roughness at the Si/insulator interface responsible for the low-gate-voltage oscillations. The roughness results in different thicknesses of the Si layer along the channel, causing different quantized energy levels, which act as barriers for carriers moving in the channel. The other reason is the tunneling through the potential barrier at the p/n junctions between the contacts and the channel, which is responsible for the high-gate-voltage oscillations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The goldfish optic nerve can regenerate after injury. To understand the molecular mechanism of optic nerve regrowth, we identified genes whose expression is specifically up-regulated during the early stage of optic nerve regeneration. A cDNA library constructed from goldfish retina 5 days after transection was screened by differential hybridization with cDNA probes derived from axotomized or normal retina. Of six cDNA clones isolated, one clone was identified as the␣Na,K-ATPase catalytic subunit α3 isoform by high- sequence homology. In northern hybridization, the expression level of the mRNA was significantly increased at 2 days and peaked at 5–10 days, and then gradually decreased and returned to control level by 45 days after optic nerve transection. Both in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining have revealed the location of this transient retinal change after optic nerve transection. The increased expression was observed only in the ganglion cell layer and optic nerve fiber layer at 5–20 days after optic nerve transection. In an explant culture system, neurite outgrowth from the retina 7 days after optic nerve transection was spontaneously promoted. A low concentration of ouabain (50–100 nm) completely blocked the spontaneous neurite outgrowth from the lesioned retina. Together, these data indicate that up-regulation of the Na,K-ATPase α3 subunit is involved in the regrowth of ganglion cell axons after axotomy.

    Notes: Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae established first feeding 3 days after hatching (DAH) at c. 17° C. Non-fed fish reached irreversible starvation at age 5 DAH. Non-fed fish showed similar feeding rate and feeding intensity as the fed fish when they were provided with prey before 5 DAH, after which the starved larvae did not feed even when prey became available. None of the six morphological measurements examined (total length, body height, eye height, head height, gut height and myotome height) showed significant differences between the non-fed and fed larvae until 5 DAH. Normal development continued only in the fed group, and the non-fed larvae showed reverse growth or body collapse after 5 DAH. Owing to the shrinkage and collapse at the top of head due to starvation, head height could be a sensitive indicator of starvation in Japanese flounder larvae. In the fed treatments, high mortality occurred from first feeding (3 DAH) to irreversible starvation (5 DAH), accounting for about two-thirds to three-quarters of the overall mortality (46–52%) throughout the experiments. This mortality was not prey density or larval density dependent. Mortality during the same period in the non-fed larvae accounted for about a third of the overall mortality (100%).

    Notes: In laboratory predation trials kinsen-gani crab Matuta lunaris rarely preyed on hatchery-reared (HR) Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, even at extremely elevated prey densities (c. 90 fish m−2), but fed readily on sacrificed Japanese founder. This suggests that under similar conditions in the wild predator-prey interactions between kinsen-gani and juvenile Japanese flounder are likely to be weak. Larger Japanese flounder readily cannibalized smaller conspecifics, suggesting that within-release group cannibalism may contribute considerably to post-release mortality of HR Japanese flounder when sufficient size variation exists within groups of released fish. Kinsen-gani presence had no effect on within-release group cannibalism rates of large Japanese flounder on small Japanese flounder. Within-release group cannibalism rates were significantly affected by densities of smaller (prey) fish, implying that the number of fish released (and thus post-release densities) in stock enhancement programmes may significantly affect post-release mortality rates. The probability of within-release group cannibalism increased rapidly as the cannibal-to-prey size ratio exceeded 1.6, suggesting that minimizing size variation of released HR individuals will reduce post-release cannibalism rates. These results have implications for Japanese flounder stock enhancement release strategies, and may be applicable to other finfish stock enhancement programmes.

    Notes: An association between postmenopausal osteoporosis and tooth loss has been proposed. However, histomorphometrical changes in alveolar bone following estrogen deficiency are rarely reported with data on microtrabecular structural changes. To clarify the relationship between estrogen deficiency and tooth loss, we histomorphometrically analyzed the trabecular structural changes of mandibular alveolar bone in ovariectomized rats. Twenty-four adult female Fischer rats were used. Eight rats were sacrificed on day 0 (baseline). The remaining 16 rats were divided into two groups. One group was ovariectomized bilaterally (OVX) and the other group was subjected to sham surgery (Sham). After administration of tetracycline and calcein, the animals were sacrificed 60 days after surgery. Bone histomorphometry, node-strut analysis and measurement of thickness of alveolar bone proper were performed on the interradicular septum of the first molar on the sagittal surface. The trabecular bone volume and trabecular number of the OVX group were significantly lower than those of the baseline and Sham groups. All of the bone resorptive and formative parameters of the OVX group were significantly higher (about one-and-a-half times) than those of the Sham group. Several osteoclasts were seen lining the irregular, eroded surface facing the bone marrow in the OVX group. Furthermore, the OVX group tended to have low microtrabecular stiffness and showed significantly thinner distal alveolar bone proper than in the baseline and Sham groups. In summary, estrogen deficiency caused osteoporotic changes and thin alveolar bone proper in the interradicular septum of rat first molar. This phenomenon might accelerate destruction of alveolar bone and tooth loss, especially in elderly women affected by periodontal disease.
