    Notizen: Transport properties of dilute silver-doped Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films prepared by a laser ablation technique have been investigated. The Hall coefficient and critical current density were measured as a function of temperature and in magnetic field up to 1.0 T. Silver doping is shown to result in significant changes in the temperature- and magnetic-field dependence of the transport properties of these films. The Hall coefficient in silver-doped films shows a clear decrease from that in silver-free films, consistent with an increase in the hole concentration caused by the silver impurities. This result lends a direct support to the observation that dilute silver dopants behave as acceptors but without appreciable influence on the transition temperature. The magnetic-field dependence of the normalized critical current density Jc(H)/Jc(0) is enhanced by silver doping, mainly due to a decrease in the effective weak-link area at the grain boundaries.

    Notizen: The shock response of single crystals of the explosive pentaerythritol tetranitrate was studied from 3.4 to 19 GPa. Four orientations, 〈110〉, 〈001〉, 〈101〉, and 〈100〉 were studied. The shock Hugoniot and shock initiation sensitivities were measured in wedge tests. Intermediate velocity transitions were noted. A sensitivity anomaly near 4 GPa was discovered for 〈110〉 orientations. Chemiluminescent phenomena associated with this anomaly were studied using framing photography and uv/visible spectroscopy. Both plane-wave explosive and gas-gun impact experiments were done. Analysis of the steric hindrance occurring during edge dislocation motion in the shear flow associated with shock-induced uniaxial strain was done. The results corroborate the hypothesis that the orientation dependence of shock initiation sensitivity is due to the anisotropy of plastic flow, that is, the relative ease of slip in different orientations.

    Notizen: Highly c-axis oriented superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) thin films with a zero-resistance temperature of 85.5 K and a critical current density of 1.9×103 A/cm2 at 77 K and zero field, respectively, have been deposited on GaAs substrates by in situ laser ablation. A barrier layer using a combination of yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) and Si3N4 proved to be a most successful buffer on GaAs when YBCO was deposited at relatively high temperature, around 650 °C. The electrical properties of the YBCO films were very dependent on YSZ deposition conditions. The electrical and structural relationship between YBCO films and the YSZ deposition conditions is further investigated by cross-section scanning electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiling.

    Notizen: Silver (Ag) contacts to very thin superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x films were prepared by thermal evaporation. The nature of the Ag/YBa2Cu3O7−x contact during thermal treatment was in situ investigated by a combination of three- and four-terminal resistance measurements. The experimental results suggested that the interaction between Ag and the YBa2Cu3O7−x film began at a temperature of around 370 °C. The contact resistance measurement for different films also demonstrated that the contact property was a strong function of the film quality and surface conditions. The lack of reproducibility in forming a low-resistance contact to very thin YBa2Cu3O7−x films and the high probability of degrading the film quality after thermal treatment of the contact might be due to the excess Ag doping in YBa2Cu3O7−x. Ag island formation, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy after thermal treatment of the contact, is a limitation of Ag for use as a good contact electrode for very thin superconducting films.

    Notizen: The high brilliance of modern synchrotron radiation sources results in a significant intensity advantage over conventional sources in the far infrared region of the spectrum. For applications with inherently low étendue, such as reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) of surfaces, this advantage extends into the mid-infrared (IR) region, to 1000 cm−1 or higher. The spectroscopic region between 100 and 1000 cm−1 is of particular interest in surface science since it includes the vibrational modes of the majority of direct bonds between the surface and adsorbate, but the low intensity of conventional sources renders investigations of this region difficult. In this paper, we discuss the design criteria of the new Daresbury infrared beamline.

    Notizen: A transition buffer, consisting of subbuffers grown at different temperatures, was used to enhance the crystallinity and the transport properties of YBa2Cu3O6.8 (YBCO) films on metallic substrates. Films were fabricated using in situ laser deposition and were strongly c-axis oriented. Critical temperature of 87 K and critical current density of 3×104 A/cm2 at 77 K were obtained for a 0.5-μm-thick YBCO film with a 0.2 μm transition yttrium- stabilized ZrO2 buffer layer. Also, the magnetic field dependence of Jc could be enhanced by using Pt-coated metallic substrates.

    Notizen: In situ laser deposition was used to fabricate YBa2Cu3O6.8 (YBCO) films on metallic substrates. With a buffer layer, YBCO films were strongly c-axis oriented. Tc = 83 K and Jc= 4000 A/cm2 at 77 K were obtained for a 0.5 μm YBCO film with a 0.15 μm yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 buffer layer. There was negligible interdiffusion occurring at the interfaces. The n value of YBCO films ranged from 1.4 to 1.5.

    Notizen: Using an inductively coupled rf plasma operated at atmospheric pressure, superconducting thin films of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x have been grown in situ on single-crystal yttria-stabilized zirconia [100] from an aerosol precursor. X-ray diffraction and rocking curve results indicate that the films are highly c-axis oriented normal to the substrate with a lattice constant of 11.67–11.68 A(ring). The full width at half maximum of these films ranges from 0.55° to 1.0°. The films have typical Tc's of 86 K and Jc's in excess of 105 A/cm2 at 77 K and zero field; magnetic measurements reveal an anisotropy of 3:1 at 69 K. The dependence of the processing parameters on the transport properties of the superconducting films is discussed.

    Notizen: Multilayers of YBaCuO superconductors and Ni-doped YBaCuO superconductors have been grown by the laser ablation technique to study the flux pinning properties of the nonmagnetic/magnetic superconducting heterostructures. Even though Ni doping depressed the superconducting properties of the single layer films, when sandwiched between high quality YBaCuO films, the composite showed high critical temperatures. Three-layer and five-layer structures of the YBaCuO/YBaCuNiO system become superconducting around 87 K when the doped layer thickness was below 100 A(ring). Three-layer structures grown on ZrO2(100) showed critical current densities of 3×106 A/cm2 at 77 K, which is about three times larger than the reported results in the literature. Epitaxial layer growth between the two superconductors was indicated by x-ray diffraction measurements, which showed complete c-axis orientation with full width at half maximum of 0.45° in a (006) line scan. Behavior of the critical current up to 0.85 T and temperatures down to 66 K has been studied. Critical current densities close to 4.5×106 A/cm2 in 0.85 T fields perpendicular to the films have been obtained at 67 K.

    Notizen: High-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox/Ag superconducting tapes were fabricated directly from the nitrate salts of Bi, Sr, Ca, and Cu by the partial-melt-growth technique. Nitrate particles were deposited electrostatically on the Ag substrate and heat treated. After process optimization of the superconducting tapes, the best samples showed typical Tc of 89 K with zero applied field critical current density of 2×104 A/cm2 (Ic=11.2 A) at 77 K and 2.6×105 A/cm2 (Ic=190 A) at 4.2 K. Unlike films grown using solid state reacted precursor powders, these films lacked the typical Bi-free, needlelike defects and possessed a smooth morphology. X-ray diffraction patterns showed the film to be highly c-axis oriented. The processing of these tapes significantly reduces the overall fabrication time from precursor materials preparation to final heat treatment.
