Notes: summary  To identify whether the direction of disk flexure deformation predicts the prognosis in cases of anterior disk displacement without reduction of painful temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the relationship between the direction of flexure, observed on pseudodynamic magnetic resonance (MR) images, and the outcome of conservative treatment using a flat occlusal splint was analysed in 40 female patients who perceived occasional or constant pain at unilateral TMJ with disk displacement without reduction. From the MR findings, 20 patients were classified as having upward flexure deformation of the disk and 20 as having downward flexure deformation. Patients’ TMJ pain, masticatory muscle pain, amount of maximal mouth opening, and MR findings were evaluated before treatment. All patients were treated with a flat occlusal splint for 6 months. The patients’ signs and symptoms were analysed statistically within each group before treatment and 3 and 6 months afterwards, and were also compared between the upward and downward flexure groups. There was no statistical difference between the groups before treatment, except in the amount of maximal mouth opening and the extent of disk displacement. The upward flexure group had persistent TMJ pain and tendency of delayed alleviation of masticatory muscle pain compared with the downward flexure group, although maximal opening gradually increased in both groups. Thus, the direction of the flexure in deformation of the disk, which can be observed only with pseudodynamic MR imaging, may predict the prognosis of painful disk displacement without reduction following treatment with a flat occlusal splint.

Notes: [Auszug] As shown in Table 1, little D-dopa seems to be transported by an active process and addition of phenylalanine and tyrosine causes an inhibition of transport of L-dopa competitively. However, other kinds of amino-acids such as glutamate and alanine do not show any significant influence. These ...

Notes: Aims:  S100 calcium-binding proteins are known to play multiple roles in carcinoma development. In this study, we focused on two kinds of these proteins, S100A2 and S100A6, and investigated their expression in thyroid neoplasms. Methods and results:  We investigated S100A2 and S100A6 expression in 141 thyroid neoplasms by immunohistochemistry. S100A2 was not expressed in normal follicles or follicular tumours, with one exception. Although 89.5% of papillary carcinoma were positive for S100A2, the expression was heterogeneous except in two cases. In anaplastic carcinoma, 78.5% of cases expressed S100A2 diffusely, while the remaining cases were negative. In normal follicles, S100A6 expression was always low, while 8.3% of follicular adenomas and 39.5% of follicular carcinomas showed increased expression. In papillary carcinomas, S100A6 expression was increased in 75% of cases, but in anaplastic carcinomas it was decreased, with only 14.3% showing high expression. Conclusions:  The expression patterns of S100A2 and S100A6 in thyroid neoplasms are unique compared with those of other carcinomas, suggesting that: (i) S100A2 and S100A6 contribute to certain events in papillary carcinoma progression, and (ii) S100A2 expression is one of the biological characteristics of anaplastic carcinoma.

Notes: The precipitation behavior in the Ti–27at.%Nb–6at.%Ta–6at.%Zr alloy aged at 643 K was examined by means of time-of-flight neutron small-angle scattering. When the alloy was aged, fine-scale α precipitates appeared. During the precipitation process, each precipitate grew in size, but the total number of precipitates remained nearly constant up to 1 Ms of ageing. The increase of critical superconducting current density could be connected with increasing size of α precipitates. The specimen for the measurements consisted of a composite containing 3721 filaments in a copper matrix. The use of neutrons was shown to give great advantages for the investigation of precipitation phenomena.

Notes: Summary The ability of the vaginal epithelium to respond to testosterone propionate by producing keratin was established when female rats were 3 days of age, whereas the vaginal stroma from rats 2 days old or less was capable of responding to the androgen and might destroy the vaginal epithelium.

Notes: Summary A new hairless gene in the Donryu strain of the rat has been designated atrichosis (at). Histological sections demonstrated that atrichotic skin was quite similar to that found in human skin with multiple follicular cysts, which is one type of skin tumor in humans.

Notes: Abstract A fourteen month-old boy with atypical phenylketonuria was treated with 5-hydroxytryptophan, L-dopa and peripheral aromatic amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor (Ro 4-4602:benserazide). Despite the good control of plasma phenylalanine on a low phenylalanine diet, he had shown no improvement in his development but progressive neurological symptoms, such asiirritability, convulsions and decrease voluntary movement. After beginning neurotransmitter therapy, his irritability disappeared promptly and the other symptoms diminished. He gradually reached his developmental milestones. At two and a half years of age, he had recovered sufficiently to be able to walk freely on treatment with 13 mg/kg/day of 5-hydroxytryptophan, 11 mg/kg/day of L-dopa and 2.7 mg/kg/day of benserazide in combination with slight restriction of phenylalanine intake (100 mg/kg/day). Levels of serotonin and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were low in the patient's CSF. His urinary biopterin (Crithidia factor) excretion was low. An increase in serum biopterin following L-phenylalanine loading was not found. Dihydropteridine reductase activity in his skin fibroblasts was normal. He excreated large amounts of erythro- and threo-neopterins (but only a trace of biopterin) in his urine. After loading with phenylalanine the urinary excretion of neopterins was even more enhanced, but biopterin remained at low levels. These findings indicated that the patient has a dihydrobiopterin synthetase deficiency.

Notes: There has been a big demand for increased vehicle safety and weight reduction ofauto-bodies. An extensive use of high strength steels is one of the ways to answer the requirement.Since the crashworthiness is improved by applications of higher strength steels to crashworthinessconscious structural components, various types of advanced high strength steels have been developed. The crash energy during frontal collisions is absorbed by the buckling and bending deformations ofthin wall tube structures of the crushable zone of auto-bodies. In the case of side collision, on theother hand, a limited length of crushable zone requires the components to minimize the deformationduring the collision. The lower the strength during press forming, the better the press formability isexpected. However, the higher the strength at a collision event, the better the crashworthiness can beobtained. It can, therefore, be concluded that steels with higher strain rate sensitivities are desired.Combinations of soft ferrite phase and other hard phases were found to improve the strain ratesensitivity of flow stresses. Bake hardening is also one of the ways to improve the strain ratesensitivity of flow stresses

Notes: Summary Application of conventional histochemical techniques to the living chick retina demonstrates that phosphorylase can synthesize glycogen (polyglucose) in vivo, in the paraboloid of the accessory cone. Natural in vivo glycogen synthesis may therefore be due to glycogen synthetase and phosphorylase systems, although phosphorylase is normally regarded as a glycolytic enzyme.
