Notes: We have successfully fabricated superconducting nanobridges and grain-boundary junctions from epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films with thickness between 20 and 30 nm and width down to ∼100 nm. The patterning process turned out to severely deteriorate the transport properties resulting in structural damage, corrosion, and oxygen loss. The most crucial steps are the baking procedure used to cure the electron beam resist, the resist development, and the ion beam etching process. By optimizing these steps and applying a suitable post-treatment procedure a significant enhancement of the sample quality could be achieved. An ultraviolet light assisted oxygenation procedure after the patterning process enabled us to achieve superconducting transition temperatures between 80 and 87 K and critical current densities at 4.2 K up to 4×107 A cm−2 for the nanobridges and 5×103–2×105 A cm−2 for the grain boundary junctions. At 4.2 K junctions with width down to 100 nm corresponding to a junction area down to 2.3×10−3 μm2 showed superconductivity. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the first spatially resolved measurement of the critical transport current density of c-axis oriented epitaxial Y1Ba2Cu3O7 films on 〈100〉 SrTiO3 using low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM). The local critical current density, imaged with a spatial resolution of ∼1 μm, has been found to vary considerably in these films. Possible reasons for the observed spatial inhomogeneities are surface imperfections of the substrate and precipitates in the film. The spatial inhomogeneity of the critical current density in epitaxial films might be a reason for differences in the temperature dependences of the critical current density obtained by magnetic and transport measurements.

Notes: We have developed a high-power XeF laser photolytically pumped by two surface discharges. The discharges slide along 760-mm-long by 12-mm-wide ferrite rods. They were energized by a single 6 μF capacitor at 50 kV in a fast discharge circuit. Each emitted up to 38 kW nm−1 cm−2 at 140 nm in 3-μs-long pulses. This powerful radiation source was used to photolyze mixtures of 450 Torr argon, 50 Torr nitrogen, and up to 12 Torr XeF2 in an active volume of about 1 l. We extracted a maximum specific laser output energy density of 8 J/l at 351 nm from the B–X transition of XeF.

Notes: A numerical study of the motion of the gaseous medium in nuclear-reactor-pumped lasers with cylindrical geometry has revealed the existence of an axis-shielding phenomenon—the spatial nonuniformity of the fission-fragment energy deposition forces the gas to redistribute itself in a way that causes the on-axis power density to vanish. The nondimensional parameters that govern the energy deposition and the gas motion are derived, and the region of parameter space in which axis shielding occurs is determined.

Notes: We performed numerical simulations and experiments on Josephson vortex flow transistors based on parallel arrays of YBa2Cu3O7–δ grain boundary junctions with a cross gate line allowing us to operate the same devices in two different modes named the Josephson fluxon transistor (JFT) and Josephson fluxon–antifluxon transistor (JFAT). The simulations yield a general expression for the current gain versus number of junctions and normalized loop inductance and predict higher current gain for the JFAT. The experiments are in good agreement with simulations and show improved coupling between gate line and junctions for the JFAT as compared to the JFT. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the preparation and characterization of the double-perovskite compound Sr2CrWO6 with a Curie temperature of 390 K. We have fabricated both Sr2CrWO6 bulk sintered polycrystalline bars and high-quality epitaxial thin films on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. The samples were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, electrical transport, and magnetization measurements. Polycrystalline samples containing a large number of grain boundaries show a large low-field magnetoresistance of up to 100% at 5 K. At room temperature, this effect is reduced to a few percent. Our results show that Sr2CrWO6 is an interesting candidate for room-temperature magnetoelectronic materials. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Clinical studies have shown that estrogen deprivation through menopause is a risk factor in both the initiation and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and that estrogen replacement therapy may be protective. One of the major pathological features in the human AD brain is the senile plaque, a proteinaceous structure composed mainly of heterogeneous peptides collectively known as A-beta (Aβ). In vitro studies have linked estrogen with Aβ modulation, suggesting that one-way that estrogen depletion at menopause may exacerbate the features of AD is through Aβ accumulation. To test this, two studies were performed on transgenic models of amyloidosis. Firstly, transgenic mice without detectable amyloid aggregates were subjected to ovariectomy and estradiol supplementation, and Aβ levels were assessed. Secondly, the effects of estrogen modulation were assessed in mice at an age when plaques would be forming initially. Overall, Aβ levels were higher in estrogen-deprived mice than intact mice, and this effect could be reversed through the administration of estradiol. These data suggest that, in vivo, estrogen depletion leads to the accumulation of Aβ in the CNS, which can be reversed through replacement of estradiol. These results provide evidence that post-menopausal estrogen depletion may be linked to an increased risk of AD through Aβ modulation.

Notes: Pertussis toxin (PT) is the major virulence factor of Bordetella pertussis. The cloning and nucleotide sequencing of the PT genes from B. pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis and Bordetella bronchiseptica has elucidated the evolution of the Bordetella species and allowed considerable advances towards the understanding of their gene expression and the development of safer vaccines against pertussis.

Notes: The nucleotide sequence of the pertussis toxin operon of Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis and Bordetella bronchiseptica, has shown that the last two species contain many common mutations and are likely to derive from a common ancestor (Arico and Rappuoli, 1987). To elucidate further the evolutionary relationships between the Bordetella species, we have cloned and sequenced the promoter region and the gene coding for the S1 subunit of pertussis toxin from additional B. pertussis strains, such as the type strain BP 18323 and two recent clinical isolates, namely strain BP 13456 from Sweden and strain BP SA1 from Italy. While the strains BP SA1 and BP 13456 are shown to differ from the published B. pertussis sequences by only one base pair, the type strain BP 18323 contains a total of 11 base-pair substitutions. Remarkably, 9 of the 11 substitutions found in BP 18323 are also common to B. parapertussis and B. bronchiseptica, strongly suggesting that this strain derives from the same ancestor as B. parapertussis and B. bronchiseptica.Computer analysis of the sequence data allows the construction of an evolutionary ‘tree’ showing that the B. pertussis strains are very homogeneous and significantly distant from B. parapertussis and B. bronchiseptica. Therefore the proposed conversion from B. parapertussis to B. pertussis appears highly improbable.
