Notes: Abstract Study of a case of dyschondrosteosis (Léri-Weill syndrome) was detected in a sixth-century adult skeleton. In addition to the typical characteristics of dyschondrosteosis (shortness of the forearms and lower legs accompanied by Madelung's deformity of the radius), examination of the skeleton revealed bilateral acetabular dysplasia. No degenerative change (osteoarthrosis) was observed in the joints directly associated with these malformations.

Notes: Abstract Cockayne's syndrome is a rare familial disorder characterised clinically by premature aging, appearing progressively from the third year on. The radiological manifestations of eight affected children have been studied and summarised. It is concluded that a skeletal survey can provide a roentgenologic pattern suggesting the diagnosis, even when it is inconclusive from the clinical signs during the first years of life. The aetiology of this syndrome is unknown, but the authors postulate the possible role of a defect of thymic hormone which has been found in all their cases.

Notes: Abstract Four boys are described with partial gigantism of the hands and/or feet, pigmented nevi, hemihypertrophy, subcutaneous hamartomatous tumors and macrocephaly, and/or other skull anomalies. Three of these patients showed an accelerated growth in their first years of life. Two suffered from cystiform pulmonary abnormalities. The children showed normal mental development with the exception of one with traumatic brain damage. Parental consanguinity was not disclosed. As a result of a review of the literature, we can say that these cases do not conform to any well defined entity and would appear to represent a ‘new’ syndrome to be categorized under congenital hamartomatous disorders. The mode of inheritance of the undoubtedly genetically determined syndrome is yet not clearly understood. We propose the term Proteus syndrome for this ‘new’ syndrome.

Notes: Abstract Three brothers with a constitutional skeletal dysplasia characterized by an excessively retarded ossification, principally of the epiphyses, the pelvis, the hands and the feet, are reported. In the hands and feet the retarded ossification is combined with an abnormal modeling of the bones. All the children appeared normal at birth. At the time of examination a moderate degree of dwarfism could be predicted. There was no mental retardation. All laboratory investigations including chromosomal analyses and examination for acid mucopolysaccharides in the urine were normal. Parental consanguinity suggest an autosomal recessive inheritance. There is no resemblance of this disorder to any of the hitherto described groups of constitutional diseases of bones.

Notes: Summary The influence of a) tissue culture medium (RPMI), b) homologous plasma (HP), and c) fetal calf serum (FCS) on lymphocytic cortisol metabolism was compared to that of phosphate buffered saline alone. RPMI was found to enhance the conversion rate 1.71 times, whereas HP and FCS enhanced it about 3.2 times. Raising the temperature of the HP and FCS to 100°C before incubation reduced the enhancing effect to the level of that obtained with RPMI.

Notes: Abstract Apart from the anterior mediastinal position and the usual size of the normal thymus, aberrant locations and extreme size variations may occur. This is illustrated by an eight month old boy whose histologically normal thymus presented as a large mass in the right hemithoraz. It is the largest normal thymus on record in an infant. Thus, idiopathic thymomegaly should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of peripheral intrathoracic mass lesions.

Notes: Abstract  · Objective: Lea symbols can be used for measuring visual acuity in childhood. Therefore, these symbols might be useful for early detection of amblyopia. We evaluated whether the visual acuity determined with Lea symbols (LS) corresponds to the visual acuity determined with the Landolt-C (LC). · Patients and methods: In 55 strabismic amblyopic volunteers aged 5–59 years, the monocular visual acuity of both eyes was determined using LC and LS. For comparison, the right eye of 20 healthy volunteers was examined. Single optotypes (LC, LS) were used in 55 amblyopes and crowded optotypes (LC17.2, LC2.6, CLS) in 40 amblyopes. The luminance of the test charts was 180–200 cd/m2, with a contrast 〉85%. The refraction of the subjects was corrected beforehand. · Results: In the 40 amblyopic eyes tested under each condition, LS exceeded CLS and LC by about 1 line (dB), LC17.2 by 2 lines and LC2.6 by 3 lines (mean values ± SD: LS 0.62±1.8 dB, CLS 0.46±1.7 dB, LC 0.5±2.0 dB, LC17.2 0.41±2.3 dB, LC2.6 0.29±2.3 dB). The non-amblyopic fellow eyes and healthy eyes showed smaller differences (fellow eyes LS 1.32±1.1 dB, CLS 1.17±1.1 dB, LC 1.15±0.9 dB, LC17.2 1.05±0.9 dB, LC2.6 0.93±1.1 dB; healthy eyes LS 1.74±0.9 dB, CLS 1.58±0.8 dB, LC 1.48±0.6 dB, LC17.2 1.41±0.7 dB, LC2.6 1.32±1.1 dB). In the amblyopic eyes, the reduction of LC was more distinct than the reduction of LS. Fifty-two amblyopes had an amblyopia 〉1 dB of LC, LC17.2 and LC2.6, while 50 had an interocular acuity difference 〉1 dB CLS. · Conclusions: Using Lea symbols, a recognition acuity can be determined and amblyopia can reliably be detected. Due to their design, the Lea symbols are particularly suitable and recommendable for application in young children. However a slight systematic difference between LS and LC has to be considered.

Notes: Abstract We present data on the multiplicity structure of inclusive charged hadron production in charged current neutrino and antineutrino freon interactions in the energy range 3–30 GeV resulting from an experiment with the bubble chamber SKAT. Average multiplicities, dispersions and correlation coefficients are investigated. Furthermore, KNO-scaling is studied and average net charges are calculated in different kinematical regions. Our data are compared with results from $$\begin{array}{*{20}c} {( - )} \\ v \\ \end{array} $$ -interactions on an isoscalar target of “free” nucleons to study the influence of nuclear effects.

Notes: Abstract The target asymmetry of the deuteron photodisintegration was measured at a photon energy of 550±50 MeV and at proton center-off-mass angles between 25 and 155 degrees.D-butanol andND 3 were used as target material yielding a maximum deuteron polarization of 41%. Proton and neutron were detected in coincidence. The data show a structure which cannot be described by the existing analyses.
