Notes: Abstract: The absorption of π+ on Ar was studied at pion energies of 70, 118, 162, 239 and 330MeV, and on N and Xe at 239MeV. Twenty-six absorption reaction channels with at least two energetic charged particles in the final state have been evaluated. Partial cross-sections have been determined according to the number of protons, neutrons and deuterons in the final state.

Notes: Abstract. The known bound for the index of nilpotency of a finitely generated nil ring of bounded index is improved and the new bound is applied to obtain other bounds for indices of nilpotency and nility.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Three fatal cases of intoxication by the desinfectant C4 (Alkyl-dimethylbenzylammoniumchloridgemisch) are reported. The unusual mode of administration of the poison render these cases as rare. In two cases the desinfectant was erroneously administered via enema, using a 3 % solution in unknown amounts. In the third case the desinfectant was used in an attempt to secure abortion. Concentration and amount were unknown. In all three cases death occured very rapidly. The findings at autopsy and the result of the chemical-toxicological analyses are reported. Identification of the toxic substances in the abortion cases was possible. The mode of action of C4 is discussed in the light of the available literature.

Notes: Abstract To improve the technique of intraoperative sonography of the spinal canal, a teaching model of the thoracolumbar spine was developed. It allows to simulate the typical spinal stenosis of a vertebral fracture and the sonographic procedure to detect and measure such a lesion. Moreover, partial laminectomy and modification of a fixateur interne set-up, which are preconditions for successful sonography, can be simulated. Independent of the surgical qualification, a high precision in sonographic localisation and measurement of the spinal canal stenosis was achieved by the training. The results could be validated in the cadaveric model. Thus, sonographic expertise acquired with the teaching model proved to be reliable in the clinical situation.

Notes: Summary The phenomena and effects of host-controlled modification (HCM) as described in the literature are comprehensively discussed. The review includes the occurrence of HCM, the restriction and modification caused by HCM, its influence on bacterial and phage crosses, and the function of restricted genes. Besides, genetic control of HCM and mutual effects of HCM and UV-irradiation are reviewed.

Notes: Abstract: The nuclear electric quadrupole moments of the isotopes 26Na, 27Na, 28Na and 29Na were measured by -NMR spectroscopy in single crystals of LiNbO3 and NaNO3. High degrees of nuclear polarization were produced by optical pumping of the sodium atoms in a fast beam with a collinear laser beam. The polarized nuclei were implanted into the crystals and NMR signals were observed in the -decay asymmetries. Preparatory measurements also yielded improved values for the magnetic moments of 27-31Na and confirmed the spin I=3/2 for 31Na. The results are discussed in comparison with large-basis shell model calculations.

Notes: Abstract Experiments using laser spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques have been performed at ISOLDE on the unstable isotopes of several light elements. The results include nuclear ground state spins, magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments, and the behaviour of mean square nuclear charge radii within isotopic strings. These give important information about the nuclear structure at shell closures and close to the drip lines.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes the development, design and operation of a television microscopic instrumentation which was specifically constructed to measure intra-orally, under clinical conditions, the adaptation of the cavo-filling margin deterioration of restorations in primary teeth. Basically, the intra-oral television micromeasurement instrumentation is achieved by coupling a petrographic microscope to a two-camera closed-circuit television system through scan line measurement circuitry. A 1-mm dia. circular area of the cavo-filling margin can be serially viewed at 250 × magnification with linear measurement change as small as 2μ noted. Movement of the patient, at these magnifications, is limited by the use of a permachon (electronic memory) tube, which retains the image during measurement.
