    Notes: The neurochemical and behavioural effects of a novel stereotaxic surgical method developed for interrupting the nerve fibres running through the rat pituitary stalk to the posterior pituitary gland was studied. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) content as well as changes in aggressiveness were measured in rats one week and one month after the surgical intervention. The main results are as follows: (1) the compression of the pituitary stalk elicits a chronic increase in water consumption, as well as in CSF vasopressin and oxytocin content; (2) the surgical intervention increased the frequency of clinch fighting after one week. The increase in aggressiveness accentuated after one month and, in addition, operated animals showed reduced scores of resting while exploratory and social behaviours increased; (3) there was a strong positive correlation between water consumption, vasopressin, and aggressiveness; (4) oxytocin changes showed a positive correlation with variation in social behaviour. The surgical intervention may serve as a model for lesions of the pituitary stalk and formation of ectopic neurohypophyses in humans.

    Notes: Gap junctions between astrocytes support a functional syncytium that is thought to play an important role in neural homeostasis. In order to investigate regulation of this syncytium and of connexin43 (Cx43), a principal astrocytic gap junction protein, we determined the sequelae of gap junction and Cx43 disposition in a rat cerebral focal ischaemia model with various ischaemia/reperfusion times using sequence-specific anti-Cx43 antibodies (designated 13-8300, 18A, 16A and 71-0700) that exhibit differential recognition of Cx43, perhaps reflecting functional aspects of gap junctions. Antibody 13-8300 specifically detects only an unphosphorylated form of Cx43 in both Western blots and tissue sections. In hypothalamus after brief (15 min) ischaemic injury, Cx43 at intact gap junctions undergoes dephosphorylation, accompanied by reduced epitope recognition by antibodies 16A and 71-0700. Tissue examined 24 h after reperfusion showed that these effects were reversible. Astrocytic gap junction internalization occurring 1 h after ischaemia was accompanied by decreased immunodetection with 13-8300. At this time, gap junctions were absent in the ischaemic core, coinciding with a loss of Cx43 recognition with 18A and 13-8300, but elevated labelling of internalized Cx43 with 16A and 71-0700. Unphosphorylated Cx43 persisted at intact gap junctions confined to a thin corridor at the ischaemic penumbra which contained presumptive apoptotic cell profiles. Similar results were obtained in ischaemic striatum and cerebral cortex, though with a delayed time course that depended on the severity of the ischaemic insult. These results demonstrate that astrocytic Cx43 epitope masking, dephosphorylation and cellular redistribution occur after ischaemic brain injury, proceed as a temporally and spatially ordered sequence of events and culminate in differential patterns of Cx43 modification and sequestration at the lesion centre and periphery. These observations suggest an attempt by astrocytes in the vicinity of injury to remodel the junctional syncytium according to altered tissue homeostatic requirements.

    Notes: Summary Hepatic glucose output is decreased by hyperglycaemia through an unknown mechanism. We hypothesize that free radicals generated by hyperglycaemic pseudohypoxia might cause glucose output to decrease by inhibiting glucose 6-phosphatase – a key enzyme of gluconeogenesis. To prove this a model experiment was performed on a microsome fraction of rat liver. One of the characteristic features of pseudohypoxia due to hyperglycaemia is an increase in the ratio of NADH/NAD + , so in the present study the changes in NADH – induced glucose 6-phosphatase activity were investigated as related to the release of inorganic phosphate (Pi) derived from glucose 6-phosphate. After incubation for 50 min, Pi release was significantly reduced by NADH (4.026 ± 0.189 vs 2.696 ± 0.429 μmol · l–1· mg protein–1, control vs NADH samples, p 〈 0.01). The decrease in the activity of glucose 6-phosphatase generated by NADH was prevented by using desferrioxamine, an irreversible ferric chelator, butylated hydroxytoluene and Trolox, two agents which inhibit lipid peroxidation, and reduced glutathione, a non-specific radical scavanger. Superoxide dismutase, catalase and the hydroxyl radical scavenger dimethyl sulphoxide proved to be ineffective. When the above investigations were carried out in the presence of a ferric-EDTA complex the inhibition of glucose 6-phosphatase was found to be inducible by hydrogen peroxide and/or hydroxyl free radicals. These investigations seem to indicate that pseudohypoxia due to hyperglycaemia can inhibit the activity of glucose 6-phosphatase both by lipid peroxidation and by inducing hydrogen peroxide and/or hydroxyl free radicals and thus it may play a part in the glucose-induced decrease of hepatic glucose output.     Description / Table of Contents: Summary To improve the wildlife habitat effectively it is important to know the nutritional intake of the wild animals species in question. A method is discussed here which has been used successfully for mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana). The method consists of raising and training young animals in such a manner that they, because they have complete trust in their observers, could be observed when foraging from a very close distance. The usefulness of the method was investigated also by comparing the plant fragments content of fecal pellets from wild and tame animals foraging the same general area.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Für eine wirksame Verbesserung des Wildlebensraumes ist es notwendig, die Nahrungsaufnahme des Wildes zu kennen. Beschrieben wird eine Methode, die beim Weißwedelhirsch (Odocoileus hemionus) und der Gabelantilope (Antilocapra americana) erprobt wurde. Sie besteht darin, daß die Wildarten aufgezogen sind und, durch ihre Vertrautheit dem Beobachter gegenüber, auf kürzeste Distanz Untersuchungen über die Nahrungswahl zulassen. Die Brauchbarkeit der Methode wurde unter anderem auch durch vergleichende Losungsuntersuchungen bestätigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The most important differences between the European and the American philosophy pertaining to wildlife are: strong beliefs of the American people in the right to bear arms, game is public property until killed and that every citizen has the right to hunt game. Today, of course, there are many limitations and regulations pertaining to these traditional American beliefs. Most laws and regulations concerning wild animals, especially game animals, are set by the individual states. The fish and game departments of the state are authorized to enforce the game laws of the particular state, they will set fishing and hunting seasons and they are responsible for proper management of the game as well as the habitat. The federal government has no direct authority over game, except in case of migratory birds and of endangered species. Due to the efforts of different agencies concerned with wild animals and their habitat and to the wide interest of the American public in preservation of their natural resources, most game animals are abundant today. The general trend of the future as far as wildlife is concerned is a more utilitarian use of the resource by many segments of the population such as hunters, nature lovers, photographers and vacationers.
    Abstract: Résumé Les différences les plus importantes entre les conceptions européenne et américaine du gibier sont les suivantes: une conviction plus forte chez les Américains du droit à détenir des armes, de l'appartenance des animaux sauvages à la communauté et du droit de chacun de chasser les animaux sauvages. Actuellement, il est toutefois de nombreuses limitations et restrictions à cette façon de voir des Américains. La plupart des lois et règlementations qui concernent les animaux sauvages, et plus particulièrement les animaux-gibier, sont édictées et appliquées par les différents Etats. Les services de la chasse et de la pêche de chaque Etat sont mandatés pour faire approuver des règlementations cynégétiques, ils peuvent fixer les périodes d'ouverture de la chasse et de la pêche et sont responsables de la gestion des populations d'animaux sauvages et de leur habitat. Le gouvernement fédéral n'est pas compétent pour la chasse, sauf en ce qui concerne les espèces migratrices menacées. Grâce aux efforts déployés par les services de la chasse des différents Etats et grâce à l'intérêt que manifeste l'Américain vis-à-vis de la protection de la nature, la plupart des espèces sauvages sont aujourd'hui bien représentées aux Etats-Unis. La tendance future est de permettre une jouissance plus généralisée des animaux sauvages par les différentes couches de la population, c'est-à-dire aussi bien par le chasseur que par le naturaliste, le photographe et le récréant.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die wichtigsten Unterschiede zwischen der europäischen und der amerikanischen Philosophie vom Wildwesen sind: ein starker Glaube, daß die Amerikaner das Recht haben, Waffen zu besitzen, daß wilde Tiere Eigentum des Volkes sind und daß ein jeder das Recht hat, wilde Tiere zu jagen. Gegenwärtig gibt es aber viele Grenzen und Beschränkungen gegen diesen traditionellen Glauben des Amerikaners. Die meisten Gesetze und Regelungen, die die wilden Tiere betreffen, besonders die jagdbaren Tiere, werden von den einzelnen Staaten erlassen und ausgeführt. Die Fisch- und Jagdabteilungen der Staaten sind bevollmächtigt, die Jagdregeln für den Staat durchzusetzen, sie können Zeiten für die Bejagung und das Fischen festlegen, und sie sind für die richtige Bewirtschaftung der Tiere und ihres Lebensraumes verantwortlich. Die Bundesregierung hat keine Zuständigkeit für die Jagd, außer im Falle der Zugvögel und der gefährdeten Arten. Durch die Bemühungen der verschiedenen staatlichen Abteilungen, sich wilder Tiere und ihrer Umgebung anzunehmen, und durch das Interesse des Amerikaners an dem Naturschutz sind die meisten wilden Tiere heute in größerer Zahl zu finden. Die zukünftige Tendenz für das Wildwesen ist die allgemeine Nutzung der wilden Tiere durch viele Teile der Bevölkerung z. B. seitens des Jägers, des Naturliebhabers, des Photographen und des Urlaubers.

    Notes: Abstract DSC, TG and quadrupole mass spectrometer data concerning methylquinuclidinium iodide (MeQ1), dried precursor gel, and crystalline levyne-type zeolite are discussed together with the thermal degradation of MeQ1 mixed with single inorganic components of the gel. It is shown that MeQ+ions play a role in the organization of the gel structure.
