Notes: Images of Bloch lines and variations of the brightness of the domain wall images were observed by means of a dark field method in thin plates of orthoferrites cut perpendicularly to the optical axis. A connection between the brightness variations and changes in the domain wall inclinations is discussed. The domain wall structure changes with the external inhomogeneous magnetic field and depends on the preceeding domain wall state. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. The preform of the rabbit sterol carrier protein 2 (pre-rSCP2) was cloned, the uniformly 15N-labelled protein expressed in Escherichia coli and studied by three-dimensional 15N-resolved nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In spite of its low solubility in aqueous solution of only ∼0.3 mM, sequential 15N and 1H backbone resonance assignments were obtained for 105 out of the 143 residues. From comparison of the sequential and medium-range nuclear Overhauser effects (NOEs) in the two proteins, all regular secondary structures previously determined in mature human SCP2 (hSCP2) [Szyperski et al. (1993) FEBS Lett. 335: 18–26] were also identified in pre-rSCP2. Near-identity of the backbone 15N and 1H chemical shifts and 1 : 1 correspondence of 24 long-range NOEs to backbone amide groups in the two proteins show that the residues 21 – 143 adopt the same globular fold in pre-rSCP2 and mature hSCP2. The N-terminal 20-residue leader peptide of pre-rSCP2 is flexibly disordered in solution and does not observably affect the conformation of the polypeptide segment 21 – 143.

Notes: Abstract Recombinant fusion proteins offer important new therapeutic approaches for the future. This report describes the use of three different genetic strategies (i.e. “mono-”, “bi-” and “tri-cistronic” vectors) to achieve stable secretion from BHK cells of a glycosylated antibody-cytokine fusion protein designed for use in anti-tumour therapy. It describes selection of a robust and effective production cell line based on stability of secretion of the product, quality of mRNA and protein products and performance in in vitro bioassays for potency. The data obtained at this stage were utilised in the selection of a suitable candidate production cell line. The relative productivity and general performance of the cells in stirred tank and fixed bed culture systems indicated that a variety of cell culture technologies provided robust tools for production of a highly selected cell clone. Consistency of the product glycosylation was determined by analysis of released oligosaccharides using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation – time of flight mass spectrometry and high-performance anion exchange chromatography. These investigations showed consistent expression of three glycoforms of the fusion protein which varied in their relative proportions in different culture systems and at different time points in a fixed bed reactor with continuous perfusion. In conclusion, this study dealt with a range of important scientific and technical issues which are essential for regulatory approval and commercial success of a recombinant protein and elucidates some useful markers for process development for similar recombinant biologicals.

Notes: Summary 31 lungs of cases of infectious anemia and 7 lungs showing other diseases of horses, all with a good clinical history based on personal observation, were studied. All subacute and chronic cases of infectious anemia showed distinct swelling and proliferation of endothelial cells both in the capillaries and small blood vessels. These changes were absent in other diseases as well as in old latent and very recent acute cases of infectious anemia.

Notes: Summary Over a period of seven years nine patients with vascular complications after lumber discectomy received medical care at the Clinic of Vascular Surgery, University of Graz Medical School. We report five acute bleeding complications occurring during the operation and four late manifestations of vascular lesions. Five patients presented with acute life-threatening iatrogenic haemorrhages from pelvic vessels. Three patients made a complete recovery, one patient died from acute haemorrhagic shock, one further patient died from sepsis due to an associated complication — an injury to the ureter. Over a period of two to ten years after primary surgery we corrected late complications such as 1 case of posttraumatic aneurysm of the aortic bifurcation found to have eroded the body of the fifth lumbar vertebra, and three cases of arteriovenous fistula between the common iliac artery and the common iliac vein. The four cases described below are an attempt to document the vascular surgical procedures involved and to provide typical findings. The risk of injuring the pelvic vessels intra-operatively can be explained by the close anatomical relation between the retroperitoneal vessels and the vertebral column and furthermore not only by the fact that pre-existent deficiencies but also injury to the anterior longitudinal ligament give access to the retroperitoneal space.

Notes: Abstract Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is now a standard method for providing long-term enteral nutrition in patients who are unable to swallow. The aim of our study was to document clinical data that would allow prediction of a possible complicated clinical course. Methods: The study was carried out retrospectively. Clinical data of patients having received a PEG tube by a single endoscopic technique were analyzed. Results: Some 5.17% of 232 patients showed complications requiring surgery including a mortality rate of 0.43%. Patients with complications had a significantly lower body mass index and there was a significantly higher complication rate in patients having obstructive malignancies compared with benign diseases. Conclusions: Low body mass index and advanced malignancies are predictors for complications after PEG application. Early installation should help prevent further nutritional deterioration and the related risk of complications.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das maligne Schwannom (MS) stellt einen Tumor der Schwann'schen oder Nervenscheidenzellen dar, der am hdufigsten im Bereich der unteren und oberen Extremität, Stamm and Kopfregion auftritt.
Notes: Abstract Malignant schwannoma (MS) is a tumor of the Schwann or nerve sheath cells, most frequently occurring in the lower and upper extremities, trunk and head region. We report the third known case of MS of the breast, which occurred in a 27-year-old woman. The palpable tumor, about 1.2 cm in diameter, was localized in the upper inner quadrant of the right breast. After ultrasonography, mammography and fine needle aspiration cytology, the tumor was removed surgically.
