Notes: Polycrystalline barium titanate that has been doped to give a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) effect is an inhomogeneous material electrically. Analysis of ac impedance data using the complex impedance plane representation gives the dc resistance of PTCR ceramics. By additional use of the complex electric modulus formalism to analyze the same data, the inhomogeneous nature of the ceramics may be probed. This reveals the presence of two, sometimes three elements in the equivalent circuit. Grain-boundary and bulk effects may be distinguished from capacitance data: grain-boundary effects have temperature-independent capacitances, whereas bulk effects show a capacitance maximum at the Curie point and Curie–Weiss behavior above the Curie point. Both grain-boundary and bulk effects appear to contribute to the PTCR effect. These results reveal limitations in current theories of the PTCR effect.

Notes: Antibody activity in the major classes and IgG subclasses against antigens in factory humidifier water was quantified by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) in 88 subjects who were exposed at work to the output from these contaminated humidifiers. Those with work-related symptoms had significantly higher mean titres than those who were symptom free, although values overlapped. The individuals with the highest IgG antibody titres also had the highest titres of IgM and IgA antibody, and these parameters did not discriminate between those with and without symptoms any better than the IgG titre. This was also true for the IgG subclasses where activity was predominantly measured in IgG 1. Quantifying the IgG antibody allowed us to demonstrate a significant correlation with years of work exposure (P〈0.001). There was no significant association between antibody and cigarette smoking, as assessed by smoking history and confirmed objectively by serum cotinine levels. There was a significant correlation with total IgG level (P〈0.001) suggesting that a non-specific immune enhancement may accompany the specific response. The antibody titres were followed up to 3 years after modification of the humidification systems, and during this time symptoms resolved and the antilunK levels progressively fell to undetectable levels. The EIA was adapted to measure antigen at nanogram levels thus providing a rapid test for screening of humidifier water as a technique that may help identify the nature of the antigens involved.

Notes: [Auszug] The experiments to be described were carried out with spark circuits of a type and power-level widely used in spectrographic analysis. In each of the circuits shown, Gx represents the control gap determining the striking voltage, while Gz represents the analysis gap which, for convenience in ...

Notes: Abstract Elastic scattering of20Ne on24Mg was studied at an incident20Ne energy of 40 MeV. Scattered20Ne and24Mg nuclei were observed in coincidence with a standard surface barrier and a position sensitive detector. The measured angular distribution shows periodic oscillations which are identified with the24Mg(20Ne,24Mg)20Ne reaction. Taking interference between elastic scattering and transfer into account, anα-spectroscopic factor ofS=0.08±0.02 was deduced from the amplitude of the oscillations.

Notes: Summary Oxygen uptake by neutrophils has been stimulated by particulate serum-treated-zymosan (STZ) and soluble N-formylmethionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP) in the presence and absence of the superoxide radical scavenger, cytochrome C. Results indicate that FMLP may stimulate neutrophils to produce superoxide but that STZ may not.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the biases associated with manta tow surveys of Acanthaster planci, counts obtained by manta-towed observers were compared with counts made on SCUBA swims under a limited range of conditions. Five 10 m wide strip transects on different parts of two reefs and with different densities of A. planci were surveyed. On average, 22.7% of starfish counted on SCUBA searches were counted on manta tows over the same transect (SD=12.0%, n=69). This proportion is termed sightability. As sightability decreases with increasing transect width, we estimate that, on average, less than 5% of the A. planci present are counted on routine manta tows which are conducted over transect of undefined width. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine which of 33 variables explained most of the variation in sightability in 10 m wide transects. The most influential variables were the proportion of cryptic starfish and an index of the degree of reef complexity. A regression equation designed to improve estimates of the abundance of A. planci on routine manta tows was developed. However, as it explained only 39% of the variation in sightability, this equation is of limited value in stabilising the negative bias associated with manta tow counts. In view of the variability of this bias, the manta tow technique is not suitable for estimating absolute densities of A. planci. Manta tow surveys are appropriate for identifying gross relative differences between densities of A. planci, and thus for determining broad-scale patterns of abundance. As such, they are a cost-effective method of estimating the geographical extent of A. planci outbreaks.
