Notes: The density-of-states effective masses for the heavy-hole, light-hole, and split-off valence bands of GaAs have been calculated as a function of energy for each band. The calculations are based on a full k⋅p theory with the most recent values used for the matrix elements. Provision has been made for the effect of the split-off energy on the matrix elements of the split-off band. The results show important nonparabolicities which should be taken into account in modeling the valence band, and rational polynomial fits have been made for ease of computation.

Notes: The new powder diffractometer installed on the beamline B2 at HASYLAB/DESY is described. It features a new design with a blocked double circle plus a third single circle which can be translated towards one another. The wide space between the two circle units conveniently holds complicated and spacious attachments and makes the instrument especially suitable for measurements under controlled environment conditions.

Notes: Electron trapping by intense wave electric fields can alter the power deposition of electron-cyclotron waves in a tokamak when high-power sources are employed. The effect of wave trapping is examined in a ray-tracing study that utilizes plasma and wave parameters appropriate for the Microwave Tokamak Experiment (MTX) [National Technical Information Service Document No. DE-88016919 (1986)]. It is found that while wave trapping does result in some degradation in the rate of power deposition, single-pass power deposition is expected to remain significant in MTX. In examining current drive for MTX, the influence of electron trapping in the magnetic wells of the tokamak equilibrium field is included. Relativistic and magnetic trapping effects reduce the driven current by 25% to 50%. This initial study does not include the effects of gradients in the magnetic field and wave vector and therefore provides lower bounds for the power deposition and driven current.

Notes: Summary The effect of mode of delivery on the survival and morbidity of 24- to 32-week infants (500–1500 g) was studied in 262 consecutive deliveries. The study population was divided into high-risk (e.g., hypertension) and low-risk (e.g. incompetence of the cervix) groups by evaluation of risk factors. 194 very preterm newborn were classified as high risk and 68 as low risk. In both groups the perinatal outcome of vaginal delivery and cesarean section delivery was compared. Cesarean section was associated with a highly significantly improved survival rate in the high-risk group, but was not associated with differences in fetal outcome in the low-risk group. The results of this study do not support primary cesarean section as the method of delivery for all very preterm fetuses.

Notes: Summary Twenty four patients with high grade malignant NHL (stage II 8, stage III 4, stage IV 12 patients respectively) were treated with a response-oriented regimen: Treatment was initiated according to the CHOP-protocol. Patients achieving at least a partial remission after 2 and a complete remission (CR) after 4 cycles were continued on CHOP to a total of 9 cycles. Patients not meeting these criteria were switched to a combination of Etoposide, Ifosfamide, Methotrexate, and Bleomycin (VIM-Bleo). With CHOP treatment, 16 patients (67%) achieved a CR. Of the remaining 8, 7 were treated with VIM-Bleo; 5 of these entered CR for a overall CR rate of 21/24 (88%). With a median follow up of 28 months 7 patients relapsed: 6 relapses occurred in patients with a rapid initial response and treated only with CHOP. We conclude, that there is a significant risk of relapse even in patients readily responding to CHOP and that consolidation therapy with a non cross-resistant regimen may improve results in these patients.

Notes: Summary A report of eight cases of skull base chordoma is given and the related literature reviewed. From disappointing experience with incomplete tumour removal and radiation the conclusion is drawn, that radical tumour removal at the first attempt should be strived for, even if the operative risk seems to be high. Cavernous sinus invasion should not be a reason to omit operation. Loss of function of one eye appears to be justified if radical tumour removal can be achieved. Possibly, the operative strategy can be improved by combining a frontal transbasal with a frontotemporal subtemporal approach, thus creating a chance for preservation of oculomotor function even in patients whose tumour has invaded the cavernous sinus region.

Notes: Abstract Terminology should facilitate communication; however, inaccuracies can lead to misunderstanding; new and revived terms normally add to the confusion. Megaturbidite is a rather common term in Europe used to identify a thick, extensive deposit from an exceptionally large mass flow. Their grain size can vary from large blocks to clay size. If the term megaturbidite is used, is should be restricted to layers that: (1) are thick compared to the host rock; (2) are laterally extensive; (3) differ in composition from the host rock; and (4) lack submarine fan geometries. They are excellent markers for stratigraphic and seismic correlations, and useful in basin analyses.

Notes: Abstract A conceptual sea-level-driven depositional model for individual fanlobes (channel-overbank systems) of the Mississippi Fan does not permit direct application of the sequence stratigraphic principles of Vail and colleagues. Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 96 results suggest that, during initial relative lowering of sea level, the canyon and upper fan channel were formed; excavated fine-grained slope sediments may have formed a debris flow deposit base for the fanlobe. Continued lowering produced constructional channel-levee-overbank deposits. Rising relative sea level inhibited input of coarse clastics, and channel depressions filled with muds. A blanket of (hemi)pelagics represents relative high sea level stand.
