Notes: Summary The binding of serum proteins with Butyl Toyopearl (BT) 650-M has been investigated and applied to on-line deproteinization for the HPLC determination of gentamicin components, c1, c1a, c2, in serum. It was found that in 0.4% perchloric acid medium about 36mg of BSA was adsorbed on 1ml of wet gel. Under this condition hydrophilic components such as gentamicin passed through the pre-column packed with BT 650-M, while serum proteins and hydrophobic components were trapped in the pre-column. The ion pair between gentamicin components and pantanesulfonate anion was effectively trapped in a reversed-phase analytical column. It was then eluted and fluorometrically determined by post-column derivatization with o-phthalaldehyde. The recovery was quantitative with good reproducibility at therapeutic concentrations in sera. Several clinical samples were analyzed by the method.

Notes: Summary New quinidine metabolites, including 10,11-dihydrodiol quinidine N-oxide, 10,11-dihydrodiol quinidine and their glucuronides, were found in human urine. A quinidine monitoring HPLC method including these metabolites, is proposed by the direct injection of body fluid samples onto the precolumn for deproteinization followed by reverse phase separation in the analytical column with a column switching technique. The recovery of spiked quinidine and its metabolites in plasma was quantitative (98–102%) with good reproducibility (C.V.: 1.6–4.0%). Several clinical samples such as whole blood and urine were analyzed by the present method.

Notes: Summary A 31-year-old male patient complaining of repeated respiratory infections was revealed to be in an immunodeficient state in both humoral and cellular immunity and accompanied by dermatomyositis which was proved by both clinical and histological findings. Persistent diarrhea followed by colonic bleeding due to multiple ulcers and a severe liver dysfunction seemed to bring him to his death. The autopsy revealed the presence of thymoma of spindel cell type, depleted cells in the systemic lymphatic systems and inflammatory lesions in the muscle, liver, lung, kidney and gastrointestinal tract. This is the first report of Good's syndrome accompanied by dermatomyositis.

Notes: Polyurethanes with various NCO/OH ratios and kraft lignin contents were synthesized by polymerization of kraft lignin (free of the low and high molecular weight fractions), a propylene-oxide-based polyether triol and polymeric MDI in tetrahydrofuran solution. Films were made by solvent casting and tested with respect to swelling behavior and tensile properties. The main findings were: At low NCO/OH ratios, kraft lignin contributed effectively to the formation of the three dimensional network; under particular conditions of NCO/OH ratio and kraft lignin content, polyurethanes of considerable toughness were obtained; at high kraft lignin contents, the obtained polyurethanes were hard and brittle regardless of the NCO/OH ratio used.

Notes: A liquid chromatograph directly coupled with a quadrupole mass spectrometer through a vacuum nebulizing interface was applied to the analysis of various free fatty acids. Chemical ionization mass spectra of the C7—C22 free fatty acids were first examined using either methanol or benzene as the reagents. Then the practical compositional analysis of the fatty acids were performed with various biological samples such as bean oil, rape oil, palm oil and milk fat where most of the fatty acids are included as their triglycerides.
