Notes: Cadmium incorporation in nominally undoped n-InP using open-tube diffusion has been investigated by photoluminescence (PL) measurements. A Sn-InP solution has been used to provide P vapor overpressure during the diffusion. This results in a 2–3 times larger incorporation of Cd acceptors in InP as compared to a low P vapor overpressure condition. In addition, the overall degradation in the PL intensity is considerably reduced by this technique. The degradation in InP during diffusion is further investigated by PL measurements on heat-treated InP under the diffusion conditions.

Notes: The growth of device quality InAsySb1−y on (100)-oriented GaSb substrates has been achieved by the use of intermediate buffer layers of Ga0.82In0.18As0.17Sb0.83 to minimize the dissolution of the subtrate by the ternary solution. Characterization of these layers by x-ray diffraction, compositional analysis, low-temperature photoluminescence, and electrical measurements indicates their high quality. Spectral response measurements of InAsSb/GaInAsSb/GaSb back-illuminated photodiodes give a 6%–7% quantum efficiency between wavelengths of 2.5 and 4.2 μm at room temperature.

Notes: The discrete variational (DV)-Xα method has been applied to CO and NiCO clusters to investigate core excitation, photoemission, and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. The transition state calculations demonstrate several important features of these excitation processes. A significant difference in the appearance of the screening effect due to the core hole is observed between photoemission and core excitation processes. The core excitation shows a greater difference in shifts between the C 1s and the O 1s electron excitations and also a stronger dependence on the bond lengths for Ni–C and C–O than those found for the ionization process. The intensity of the core excitation is briefly described in terms of the calculated dipole transition probability.

Notes: In this investigation, four non-invasive techniques were used to assess skin tumours. In particular a study was made to determine whether the malignant nature of a skin lesion could be obtained from these methods. Point thermometry using a thermocouple sensor did not yield any useful information. Skin blood flow measurements using the laser Doppler technique were Statistically significantly higher in malignant compared to benign lesions. Ultrasound Doppler assessment of deeper dermal blood flow was also used and gave only one false-negative and three false-positive readings when arbitrary threshold values were used in the detection of malignancy. In 24 patients with malignant melanoma there was a significant positive correlation between the value for dermal expansion obtained by ultrasound A-scan measurement and the histological depth of the lesion. We believe that these preliminary studies indicate that these methods to assess skin tumours may he important clinically and should he further explored in the assessment of tumours prior to treatment.

Notes: Summary The effect of mycotoxin (T-2 toxin) on catecholamines and Na+, K+-ATPase activities in rat epididymis has been evaluated. Dopamine and norepinephrine levels were significantly elevated in the caput and corpus regions whereas their levels remained unchanged in the caudal part of the epididymis. Na+, K+-ATPase activity was significantly increased in all the three regions of rat epididymis as a result of the toxin treatment. These changes may suggest an adverse effect on epididymal functions in rats.

Notes: Summary Changes in liver acid hydrolase activities during the infection of albino rats,Mastomys or mice withPlasmodium berghei are described. B-Glucosidase, B-galactosidase and N-acetyl-B-D-glucosaminidase exhibited widely different responses with acid phosphatase and cathepsin-B the least responsive and are likely to be causally related to immunity of animals.

Notes: Summary Purified Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus was solubilized under reducing condition by using 2-merceptoethanol (2 ME) or nonreducing condition without 2 ME and its structural proteins were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS-PAGE), followed by the Western blotting using polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against JE. The mobilities and reactivities against polyclonal anti-serum of V 3 (E) and V 2 (C) were reduced when virion was disrupted under reducing condition. The 54 K band corresponding to V 3 was treated with cyanogen bromide (CNBr) and analyzed by the second SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. By Coomassie Blue staining multiple bands of molecular weight ranging from 54 K to 8 K daltons were revealed for CNBr-treated V 3. For the specimens disrupted under reducing condition, uncleaved 54 K and cleaved 8 K, 14 K, 45 K, and 48 K bands were reactive by one of the JE and Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) crossreactive monoclonal antibodies (NARMA 16), while other monoclones did not show any reactivity. The uncleaved V 3 prepared under nonreducing condition was reactive with several monoclones to almost similar levels. After CNBr treatment, the antigenic epitope(s) for a flavivirus-common monoclone (NARMA 24) and those for NARMA 16 appeared to locate on different fragments, while the epitopes for other monoclones lost their antigenicities. These results indicate the importance of disulfide bond and highly organized structure to maintain some of the epitopes on V 3.

Notes: Abstract A total of 450 yeast isolates were obtained from up to 34 sites on 59 human subjects. The yeasts were characterized using morphological features and assimilation tests. Ten species were identified but, of these,Candida albicans andCandida parapsilosis were the most common and accounted for 84% of the isolates. An examination of the biotypes of the various species indicated a much greater diversity in the yeast microflora than that detected by species identifications alone. Fifty-five biotypes were differentiated and it is suggested that these could be regarded as distinct taxonomic or ecological entities.
