Notes: [Auszug] SURELY the “luminous clouds” reported from Cornwall on September 10, in your issue of September 29, were auroral. It is a pity if no other record of altitude has been made, when one observation of such precision is available. I myself have a fairly good record of the upper edge of the bright ...

Notes: Summary A technique was devised whereby the arterially induced pulsations, in range of intracerebral interfaces that can be detected ultrasonically through the intact skull, could be written out as an analogous wave form. The Rise Times and Delay Times of these range pulsations were measured in patients with cerebrovascular disease or cerebral tumours to determine whether they differed significantly from the normal. In healthy people the Rise Times varied from 30 to 180 milliseconds and the Delay Times from 95 to 250 milliseconds. These wide limits were not surpassed in the diseases stated, nor did averaging of the results from several interfaces in each hemisphere show any significant difference from the normal. One reason for the wide variation in the shape of the recorded waves (which is reflected in the scatter of Rise Times and Delay Times) is that the pulse wave varies in shape and speed of propagation as it spreads peripherally. Any single interface may thus move as a result of different movements of a number of neighbouring domains, each of which may be slightly out of phase with the others. A second reason is that a single interface is recorded on the oscilloscope as a burst of cycles of about 2 microseconds duration. This represents 1.6 millimetres in range. Echoes returning from interfaces separated by less than 1.6 millimetres in range will therefore result in interference of cycles. The recorded movement of any one cycle may therefore represent, to a varying and unknown degree, the movement of more than one interface. It is concluded that, using ultrasonic methods, the detailed study of the individual waveforms written out by the arterially induced movement of intracerebral interfaces is not useful as a diagnostic test.

Notes: Abstract Eleven non-lactating Holstein cows of 8–10 years of age and 12 female Holstein calves of 5–6 months of age were maintained, during winter season, in the climatic laboratory for 3 days at thermoneutral climate (18.3°C, 50% RH) followed by 3 days at hot climate (32.2°C, 50% RH). Feed and water were provided ad libitum. Whole body40K counting, nitrogen balance, body weight and rectal temperature were taken on the third day on each animal at the climatic exposures mentioned above. Body potassium decreased significantly in cows (p 〈 0.01) but not in calves. Nitrogen retention decreased with heat exposure in cows and calves (p 〈 0.01) and the balance was negative in cows but positive in calves. In cows, body weight decreased with heat exposure 1.81%, significantly (p 〈 0.05), but it did not change significantly in calves. The final rise in body temperature under hot climate was significant in cows and calves (p 〈 0.01), being 0.82°C and 1.07°C, respectively. The heat-induced changes, except the rise in body temperature, were significantly different in cows from those in calves. These results indicate that calves are more heat tolerant than cows on the basis of catabolic reactions but not on rectal temperature rise.

Notes: Abstract The thresholds for startle responses to electric shock were measured in adult male Wistar strain rats given ethanol daily in doses rising from 3 to 7 g/kg over a 30-day period, and in controls receiving equicaloric doses of sucrose. Tests made 23, 36, or 47 h after ethanol (i.e., during partial or complete ethanol withdrawal) gave threshold values significantly lower than those obtained with sucrose-treated controls. The difference became greater after longer ethanol treatment and larger doses. However, when threshold measurements were made under the acute influence of ethanol in the experimental group, the mean values were virtually equal to those of the sucrose controls. This normalization, by ethanol, of a disturbance produced by absence of ethanol in a chronically treated animal is indicative of physical dependence. Following termination of ethanol treatment there was a gradual return of startle thresholds almost to control values over a relatively short period, indicating that the changes underlying the hyperexcitability are readily reversible.

Notes: Abstract Experimental determinations of the local heat transfer by forced convection from model leaves heated by a constant energy flux were made in the laboratory under laminar and turbulent flow conditions. The results are expressed in a logarithmic dimensionless plot of the local Nusselt number, Nu d , against the local Reynolds number, Re d . For the laminar case, Nu d was only a linear function of Re d 1/2 downwind from the leading edge regions, although this relationship departed from that predicted theoretically due to the finite size and thickness of the model. For the turbulent case, a simple relationship between Nu d and Re d was found over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The enhancement of heat transfer in the turbulent case depends primarily on the scale of turbulence rather than on the turbulent intensity. Past workers have discussed their results in relation to a factor β, defined as the ratio between the heat transfer predicted by the Polhausen equation, and that measured. The results suggest that β is not a unique parameter and may not be useful in describing the overall turbulent transfer process.

Notes: Summary A basic object of the paper is the presentation of a method that permits the experimental determination of stresses associated with vibrations in flexible members, immersed in a fluid, and subjected to prestress. The applied object of the paper is to present a method that may help in the visualization of one form of behavior of buoy-cable systems loaded by the action of water waves. Photoelasticity is used for the analysis. The cable is modeled by a solid urethane rubber strip and the buoy by a floating plastic round can. Waves of controllable frequency are produced by a device actuated by a shaker. Bending and axial stresses in the strip are determined and the possible extension of the experimental results obtained to prototypes by means of scaling laws is suggested.
