Notes:
Summary 1. The basic number of i. p. injected Yoshida hepatom ascites cells for BD VI rats and BDE rats amounts to about 100000 cells per rat if, before transplantation, the ascites cells have through 3 passages grown isologous to the recipient animal to be tested. 2. Tumor bearing BD VI rats and BDE rats do not produce antibodies, which have an cytotoxic reaction at 37° against autologous respectively isologous grown ascites cells, if the ascites tumor has been bred through 3 passages on the corresponding isogeneic strain before transplantation. 3. However, with the tested rat strain (BD VI, BDE, Sprague Dawley) antibodies turn up, which have a cytotoxic reaction at 37°, if the rats bear an ascites tumor, which before-hand has not been bred at all or through less than 3 passages on isogeneic rats. Under these conditions the BD VI rats and the Sprague Dawley rats show a stronger antibody reaction than BDE rats. 4. With oil induced peritoneal exsudates as well as with the ascitic fluids used on Sprague Dawley rats, BD VI rats and BDE rats complement was demonstrated by means of the cytotoxic tests. 5. BDE rats can be immunized against this tumor by repeated injections of formalin-fixed Yoshida ascites cells: After i. p. transplantation of viable ascites cells in the 50-fold quantity of the basic number only 9 out of 21 experimental animals showed an ascites growth. Even with the immunized rats it was, however, not possible to clearly prove humoral anti-bodies against the ascites cells neither with the cytotoxic test nor with the mixed antiglobulin reaction.
