Notes: Summary To assess the capacity of transitional cells to synthesize and release polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIg-R) in bladder carcinoma, we studied the localization of pIg-R in normal and tumor tissues and measured the levels of secretory component (SC) either in the free form or bound to Ig (S-IgA, S-IgM) in the serum and urine of 56 patients with transitional-cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder. In the normal bladder mucosa, pIg-R was localized in the cytoplasm and plasma membranes of the superficial cells and on all epithelial cell membranes. In TCC cases, 65% of those studied expressed pIg-R. A marked heterogeneity in pIg-R staining was observed in some tumors. Although a better expression of pIg-R in tumors with a well-preserved epithelial architecture was observed, no correlation was found between pIg-R expression and the grade or stage of the tumors in the patients under study. Three groups were established: (1) in TCC with no complications, serum levels of free SC and S-IgA were significantly increased; (2) in TCC with urinary infections (UI), serum levels of free SC and S-IgA were significantly higher than control values but lay within the same range observed in TCC with no complications and rates of urinary excretion of SC were significantly higher than those in normal subjects; (3) in TCC without UI but with hepatic disorders [high gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity], there was a correlation between serum S-IgA levels and GGT activity (r=0.5, P〈0.005) and serum SC levels were significantly higher than those observed in the other groups. Whereas urinary SC levels appear to reflect urinary infection, serum SC levels, albeit influenced by the hepatic status, may be an additional marker of TCC of the bladder.

Notes: Abstract The level structure of196Po has been studied using a160Dy(40Ar, 4n) reaction and a recoil-catcher technique to reduce fission. The results showed a sharp drop off in the first (2+) and (4+) energies relative to systematics implying an abrupt increase in the quadrupole collectivity at N=112. In addition, second (2+) and(4+) states were identified at 859 and 1388 keV, respectively, suggesting the discovery of a 4p2h deformed band in Po isotopes which is related to known 2p2h proton bands in several Pb isotopes. A prompt183W(20Ne, 5n@#@) experiment located similar second 2+ and 4+ states at 1039 and 1483 keV in198Po providing corroboration and extended information on the properties of the new Po deformed bands. A measured halflife of 850 (90) ns for the 2491 keV (11−) state in196Po implied collective E3 contributions to the extractedB (@#@ E3; 11−→8+)=27(5) W.u.

Notes: Abstract The neutron deficient nucleus96Pd, four proton holes below the doubly magic100Sn, has been studied in the reaction64Zn (36Ar, 2p 2n). Innγ andγγ coincidences levels up to 7 MeV excitation energy were established, and a new neutron core-excited isomer with T1/2=35(4)ns and g=0.83 (5) was identified. A detailed shell model study yields excellent agreement for states within the π(p1/2,g9/2) configuration space but fails to reproduce the isomerism andg-factor for the core-excited state.

Notes: Abstract Mean lives and limits of lifetimes have been determined for some ten mostly yrast states in70Se, by means of the recoil distance Doppler shift technique. The states were excited in the reaction40Ca(36Ar,α2p) at 115 MeV resp. the reaction58Ni(14N,pn) at 39 MeV beam energy. The systematic decrease ofB(E2) values along the the ground band transitions indicates a band crossing consistent with theγ-ray energies. Effects of continuum feeding times in both reactions are being discussed. The lifetimes of the lowest three yrast transitions in72Se have been remeasured by means of the reactions40Ca(36Ar,4p) and60Ni(14N,pn).

Notes: Abstract The neutron-deficient nuclei100,101Cd were identified for the first time in — beam following the reactions58Ni +46,48Ti and58Ni +50Cr at 230 MeV and 245 MeV bombarding energy of the58Ni beams. Theγ-decay of the isotopes100,101,102Cd was studied inpγ, ppγ,nγ, nnγ, andnγγ prompt and delayed coincidence spectra. Isomers were found with spin and half life {ie1-01}=8+, T1/2=52(5) ns in100Cd, {ie1-02}=(19/2+), T1/2=4.6(4) ns in101Cd and {ie1-03}=8+, T1/2=56(4) ns in102Cd. In a PAD experiment theg-factor of the {ie1-04}=8+ isomer in100Cd was measured to be g=1.24(6). Using the reaction36Ar +70Ge at 135 MeV energy of the36Ar beam, theg-factor and the quadrupole moment of the {ie1-05}=8+ isomer in102Cd were measured to be g=1.29(3) and Q=87(10) fm2, respectively. The spectroscopic results are discussed within a shell model approach using a100Sn core, which accounts well for the electromagnetic properties of the proton aligned isomers. The structure of the spherical neutron states, dominated by the close lying vd5/2, g7/2 orbitals, and the gradually developing quadrupole collectivity are reproduced by the shell model calculations.
