Notizen: Economic wealth is humankind's most dominant myth. However, this mythmust be significantly altered if economic activity and ecologicalsustainability are to be achieved for posterity. Changing the economicmyth means shifting the paradigms which underlie it, and shifting theseparadigms means changing the assumptions and values which lie at theheart of business's relationship to the planet. Research supports thenotion that widescale, fundamental change efforts are required toachieve such shifts. Examines the magnitude of the changes whichprobably will be necessary in order to achieve a truly sustainablesociety in the future. Discusses the nature of some of the scientific, economic, and management paradigm shifts which need to take place inbusiness organizations before the myth of economic wealth can be trulymodified to include Mother Earth.

Notizen: Abstract Enterprise strategy provides an accepted theoretical framework for integrating the moral responsibilities of organizations into their strategy formulation and implementation processes. We argue that, when extended to the ecological level of analysis, enterprise strategy provides a sound theoretical framework for ethically and strategically accounting for the ultimate stakeholder, planet Earth. Within the framework of enterprise strategy, a value system based on sustainability can provide a sound ethical basis for developing ecologically sensitive strategic management systems which allow organizations to satisfy the demands of the myriad green stakeholders that represent the planet in the immediate business arena. This provides a new "flavor" of enterprise strategy in which organizations "stand for sustainability." We call this new flavor "eco-enterprise strategy."

Notizen: Abstract Managing ethical behavior is a one of the most pervasive and complex problems facing business organizations today. Employees' decisions to behave ethically or unethically are influenced by a myriad of individual and situational factors. Background, personality, decision history, managerial philosophy, and reinforcement are but a few of the factors which have been identified by researchers as determinants of employees' behavior when faced with ethical dilemmas. The literature related to ethical behavior is reviewed in this article, and a model for understanding ethical behavior in business organizations is proposed. It is concluded that managing ethics in business organizations requires that managers engage in a concentrated effort which involves espousing ethics, behaving ethically, developing screening mechanisms, providing ethical training, creating ethics units and reinforcing ethical behavior.

Notizen: Beyond their classic roles in allergic reactions and defence against parasites, mast cells can now be viewed as key players in regulating connective tissue homeostasis. There is good evidence that mast cells are in close morphological and functional contact with the peripheral nervous system. Although substantial differences exist between mast cells of different tissues and different species, they produce a wide range of agents, including cytokines, growth factors, and other regulatory molecules, and they respond to an equally wide range of substances, including neuropeptides. At our current level of understanding wound healing, inflammation plays a central role in this process, with macrophages being central protagonists at the cellular level. There is now increasing evidence that mast cells are also involved in wound healing, in health and disease. They produce and secrete histamine, heparin, and multifunctional cytokines and growth factors, which represent important agents in the wound-healing process. Reviewing the recent literature supporting this hypothesis, we also outline the clinical importance of this work to help close the gap between basic research and clinical application.

Notizen: This paper examines selected issues arising from two studies in mainstream education of two minority groupings of children in Scotland–those with serious medical conditions and refugee children–completed in 1997 and 1999, respectively. It draws on first-person accounts of children, parents and teachers and focuses on school-based peer relationships, including friendships. Many of the described peer experiences were unhappy or mixed, only a minority were positive. The paper relates the research and its findings to current social and educational policy contexts and to theories on peer relationships, friendship and rejection. It challenges the problematizing of groups or individuals with minority experiences and school staff's acceptance of inevitable difficulty in these children's peer relationships. It hypothesizes that ways of developing all children's peer relationships need to be addressed in schools if the well-being of children who may be socially vulnerable is to be improved.

Notizen: We examine the behavior of self-pulsating laser diodes when injected with periodic optical signals. We experimentally and theoretically investigate the phase difference between the injected optical signal and the synchronized self-pulsating laser diode emission. We explore the phase difference dependence on detuning between the laser free-running self-pulsation frequency and the applied signal frequency, and on the injected signal power. The determined sensitive dependence of the phase difference on these factors has important consequences when self-pulsating lasers are used as optical signal processing elements in all-optical communication networks, where such sensitivity may lead to timing problems. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report on temporal response measurements of InGaAs metal–semiconductor–metal photodetectors (MSM–PDs) under high-illumination conditions. The peak current efficiency of the MSM–PDs decreases as optical pulse energy increases due to space-charge-screening effects. The screening effect begins to occur at an optical pulse energy as low as 1.0 pJ, as predicted by a recent two-dimensional model. The fall time and full width at half maximum of the impulse response increase as the optical pulse energy increases and decrease as the bias voltage increases. For optical pulse energies between 1.0 and 100 pJ, the rise time displays a U-shaped behavior as the bias voltage increases. This may be associated with the shape of the electron velocity-field characteristic in conjunction with the screening of the dark field by optical generated carriers.
