    Notes: Two practical and effective, h-p-type, finite element adaptive procedures are presented. The procedures allow not only the final global energy norm error to be well estimated using hierarchic p-refinement, but in addition give a nearly optimal mesh. The design of this is guided by the local information computed on the previous mesh. The desired accuracy can always be obtained within one or at most two h-p-refinements.The rate of convergence of the adaptive h-p-version analysis procedures has been tested for some examples and found to be very strong.The presented procedures can easily be incorporated into existing p- or h-type code structures.

    Notes: An a-posteriori error estimator for finite element analysis proposed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu is analysed and shown to be effective and convergent. In addition we analyse wider classes of estimators of which the Zienkiewicz-Zhu estimator is a special case. It is shown that some of these estimators will be asymptotically exact. Numerical evidence is presented supporting the analysis.

    Notes: This is the first of two papers concerning superconvergent recovery techniques and a posteriori error estimation. In this paper, a general recovery technique is developed for determining the derivatives (stresses) of the finite element solutions at nodes. The implementation of the recovery technique is simple and cost effective. The technique has been tested for a group of widely used linear, quadratic and cubic elements for both one and two dimensional problems. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the recovered nodal values of the derivatives with linear and cubic elements are superconvergent. One order higher accuracy is achieved by the procedure with linear and cubic elements but two order higher accuracy is achieved for the derivatives with quadratic elements. In particular, an O(h4) convergence of the nodal values of the derivatives for a quadratic triangular element is reported for the first time. The performance of the proposed technique is compared with the widely used smoothing procedure of global L2 projection and other methods. It is found that the derivatives recovered at interelement nodes, by using L2 projection, are also superconvergent for linear elements but not for quadratic elements. Numerical experiments on the convergence of the recovered solutions in the energy norm are also presented. Higher rates of convergence are again observed. The results presented in this part of the paper indicate clearly that a new, powerful and economical process is now available which should supersede the currently used post-processing procedures applied in most codes.

    Notes: In this second part of the paper, the issue of a posteriori error estimation is discussed. In particular, we derive a theorem showing the dependence of the effectivity index for the Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator on the convergence rate of the recovered solution. This shows that with superconvergent recovery the effectivity index tends asymptotically to unity. The superconvergent recovery technique developed in the first part of the paper1 is the used in the computation of the Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator to demonstrate accurate estimation of the exact error attainable. Numerical tests are shown for various element types illustrating the excellent effectivity of the error estimator in the energy norm and pointwise gradient (stress) error estimation. Several examples of the performance of the error estimator in adaptive mesh refinement are also presented.

    Notes: A higher-resolution and bounded discretization scheme is proposed for calculations of incompressible steady flows with finite-volume methods. The scheme combines a second-order upstream-weighted approximation with the first-order upwind differencing under the control of a convection boundedness criterion. It is easy to implement for calculations of multi-dimensional flows, and the resulting finite-difference coefficient matrix is always diagonally dominant. Applications to three test problems, two linear and one non-linear, and comparisons with two commonly used schemes, hybrid upwind/central differencing and QUICK, demonstrate the capability of the method in capturing steep gradients while maintaining the boundedness of solutions.

    Notes: A numerical study of confined jets in a cylindrical duct is carried out to examine the performance of two recently proposed turbulence models: an RNG-based K-∊ model and a realizable Reynolds stress algebraic equation model. The former is of the same form as the standard K-∊ model but has different model coefficients. The latter uses an explicit quadratic stress-strain relationship to model the turbulent stresses and is capable of ensuring the positivity of each turbulent normal stress. The flow considered involves recirculation with unfixed separation and reatachment points and severe adverse pressure gradients, thereby providing a valuable test of the predictive capability of the models for complex flows. Calculations are performed with a finite volume procedure. Numerical credibility of the solutions is ensured by using second-order-accurate differencing schemes and sufficiently fine grids. Calculations with the standard K-∊ model are also made for comparison. Detailed comparisons with experiments show that the realizable Reynolds stress algebraic equation model consistently works better than does the standard K-∊ model in capturing the essential flow features, while the RNG-based K-∊ model does not seem to give improvements over the standard K-∊ model under the flow conditions considered.

    Notes: The paper reports on a numerical study of turbulent confined jets in a conical duct with a 5° divergence. The flow has a large ratio of jet to ambient velocities at the entrance so that it gives rise to strong recirculation. The calculations are carried out with a general finite volume method designed for calculating incompressible elliptic flows with complex boundaries. Turbulence is simulated by the standard κ-∊ model. The sensitivity of the solution to numerical discretization errors is examined using three convection schemes, i.e. hybrid central/upwind differencing, QUICK and SOUCUP, on two grids consisting of 68 × 50 and 102 × 82 points respectively. An examination is also made of the influence of inlet boundary conditions on the predicted flow field. The computed results are compared with experimental data for mean axial velocity, turbulent shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy profiles. It is shown that the calculations reproduce the essential features of the flow observed in the experiments.
