Notes: Abstract Rye chromosomes of wheat-rye addition lines were successfully identified by means of an RFLP analysis with 30 probes. Our results are in agreement with previous cytological data concerning the identity of lines F (+1R), D (+2R), C (+3R), A (+4R), E (+5R) and B (+7R). Two categories of chromosomal rearrangements have been distinguished, namely: (1) deletions: the current line D possesses a chromosome 2R deleted on its short arm and the line G a chromosome 3R deleted on its long arm; we have also noticed a deletion on the long arm of wheat chromosome 1A in line F61; and (2) evolutionary reciprocal translocations in rye relative to wheat which have been previously mentioned in the literature. The anther culture response of the different lines was studied. A significant difference between ‘FEC 28’ and the addition lines was observed for embryo production and plant regeneration. It appears that genes located on ‘S 10’ chromosome arm 3RL and on ‘FEC 28’ chromosome arm 1AL increase embryo frequency whereas gene(s) located on ‘S 10’ chromosome 5R reduce(s) it. Plant regeneration results suggest that genes increasing regeneration ability and green-plant frequency are located on ‘S 10’ chromosome 4R. The long arm of chromosome 1A seems to be involved positively in green-plant regeneration whereas chromosomes 1R and 3R limit plant regeneration.

Notes: Abstract RFLP analysis has been used to characterise XMv, a chromosome of Aegilops ventricosa present in a disomic addition line of wheat. This chromosome is known to carry a major gene conferring resistance to leaf rust (Lr). The analysis demonstrated that XMv is translocated with respect to the standard wheat genome, and consists of a segment of the short arm of homoeologous group 2 attached to a group 6 chromosome lacking a distal part of the short arm. Lr was located to the region of XMv with homoeology to 2S by analysis of a leaf rust-susceptible deletion line that was found to lack the entire 2S segment. Confirmation and refinement of the location of Lr was obtained by analysis of a spontaneous resistant translocation in which a small part of XMv had been transferred to wheat chromosome 2A.

Notes: Summary Fifty-two progenies originating from a cross between 8x and 4x triticale were submitted to cytogenetic analyses and to various electrophoretic studies [high-molecular-weight (HMW) glutelins, HMW secalins, γ-secalins, α and ω-gliadins, β-amylases] to identify new genetic structures, more specifically the input of the D genome in a genetic context other than the wheat one. Markers of the rye genome (HMW and ω-secalins) were identified in all of the triticale lines, but they originated either from the 4x or from the 8x parent, or from both. Chromosomes 4A, 1B, and 2R, present in both parents, showed the same banding patterns in all progenies. Chromosomes 1R and 5R, present in both parents, showed heterogeneous labelling. The expression of chromosomes 6A, 1D, and 4D, present in the 8x parent only, was more complex with a possible involvement of a regulatory system. Several hexaploid progenies had introgressed part of the D genome, suggesting that crossing 8x and 4x triticale was a practicable approach for transferring D chromosomes into hexaploid triticale.

Notes: Summary Two F5 strains of tetraploid triticale (2n= 4x=28), obtained from 6x triticaleX2 rye progenies, were crossed with diploid and tetraploid rye, some durum and bread wheats, and various 8x and 6x triticale lines. Meiosis in the different hybrid combinations was studied. The results showed that the haploid complement of these triticales consists of seven chromosomes from rye and seven chromosomes from wheat. High frequencies of PMCs showing trivalents were observed in hybrids involving the reference genotypes of wheat and triticale. These findings proved that several chromosomes from the wheat component have chromosome segments coming from two parental wheat chromosomes. The origin of these heterogeneous chromosomes probably lies in homoeologous pairing occurring at meiosis in the 6x triticaleX2x rye hybrids from which 4x triticale lines were isolated. A comparison among different hybrids combinations indicated that the involvement of D-genome chromosomes in homoeologous pairing is quite limited. In contrast, meiotic patterns in 4x triticale X 2x rye hybrids showed a quite high pairing frequency between some R chromosomes and their A and B homoeologues.

Notes: Solvent accessible peptide bonds in proteins exhibit a 1-3° compression of the OCN bond angle and a corresponding expansion of the NCCa bond angle, relative to buried peptide bonds. These changes are consistent with an increase in hydrogen bonding to the carbonyl oxygen accompanying solvent exposure (J. D. Dunitz and F. K. Winkler, (1975) Acta Cryst. B31, 251-263). For amphiphilic structures such as α-helices, systematic differences in peptide-bond geometry between solvent-exposed and buried residues will generate significant curvature. A decrease of 4° in the OCN bond angle between hydrophilic and hydrophobic sides of an amphiphilic helix will lead to smooth bending, with a radius of curvature of about 70 Å. This curvature is in the range observed for α-helices in proteins. Helix curvature is estimated to have only a small effect on the magnitude and direction of the helical dipole moment.

Notes: Optical multichannel analysis (OMA) was used to follow the kinetics of colour changes in electrochromic polyaniline films when the latter are polarized in an electrolytic medium at different potentials. These colour changes, which are related to the transition from one polymer form to another, are very fast. OMA also allowed us to obtain an apparent value of the film absorption coefficient. In the investigated range (300-800 nm), several absorption phenomena can be displayed which are characteristic of the different polymer forms. Two electrolytic media (1 M HCl and 1 M H2SO4) were compared to investigate the role played by the size of the inserted counter-ion. The overall results allow us to estimate the practical possibility of using polyaniline in electrochromic devices.
