Notizen: The hard magnetic properties of melt-spun Nd(Fe,M)12 nitrides and carbides were studied. The highest coercivity was obtained in NdFe10Mo2Nx with values of 8.8 kOe at room temperature and 33.7 kOe at 10 K. Other Nd(Fe,M)12N(C)x compounds had similar intrinsic magnetic properties but a lower coercivity than NdFe10Mo2Nx. The low coercivities were attributed to the three soft sources; α-Fe, non-ThMn12 structure, and insufficient nitrogenation or carbonation.

Notizen: We have developed synthetic techniques involving coprecipitation of iron(III) and manganese(II) ions from aqueous solutions using NaOH to create single-crystal, stoichiometric MnFe2O4 particles. The particle diameter could be varied between 5 and 25 nm by varying the metallic-ion to hydroxide-ion concentration ratio. Magnetic measurements revealed that the saturation magnetization decreased, the ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic transition broadened, and the apparent transition temperature increased, all with decreasing particle size.

Notizen: Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were prepared with mass-selected C+, CH2+, CH3+, and CH4+ ions, and the dependence of film microstructures and properties on ion species was investigated with micro-Raman spectroscopy, optical band gap measurement and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicate that highly sp3 bonded DLC films are achieved using carbon and hydrocarbon ions with ion energy of 100 eV. AFM results exhibit that the surface roughness for these films is very low, which is associated with the formation of a dense diamond-like phase as suggested by the subplantation model. The thermal stability of the films were investigated in the temperature region of 200–800 °C. Raman measurements show that the D peak evolves at much lower temperatures for the film prepared with CH4+ than that for the film prepared with C+ ions during annealing. The results indicate that hydrogen-free carbon films have a much better thermal stability than hydrogenated carbon films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Cadmium sulfide crystals were shocked along the crystal c axis to peak stresses ranging between 18 and 75 kbar. Stress-time profiles were measured both at the impact surface and after transmission through 1 to 2-mm-thick samples. Detailed analysis of the present data in combination with published static results makes a persuasive case for the completion of the wurtzite to rocksalt phase change in less than 0.2 μs under shock loading. The main findings are: the transition stress is measured to be 32.5±1 kbar; transformation to the final state is a two step process with the first step being too rapid (less than 10 ns) to be observed in our experiments and the second step occurring in 0.1 to 0.2 μs; the transition occurs directly from the elastic state prior to any plastic deformation. The calculated mean stress for the transition is 22.9 kbar in good agreement with the 23 kbar pressure reported in static high pressure studies; the presence of large shear stress has no effect on the transition pressure. Our results suggest that the onset of the phase transition results in plastic deformation and, subsequently, the phase transition and plasticity are coupled under shock loading. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Cavity-enhanced detection is used to monitor minute vapor plumes produced by focusing a pulsed laser beam onto a surface placed inside a resonant optical cavity. The photovaporization signals from a variety of different materials are examined, with emphasis being placed on their amplitude and temporal structure.

Notizen: Room-temperature ultraviolet (UV) laser emission of ZnO microcrystallite thin films is reported. The hexagonal ZnO microcrystallites are grown by laser molecular beam epitaxy. They are self-assembled and parallelly arrayed on sapphire substrates. The facets of the hexagons form natural Fabry–Pérot lasing cavities. The optical gain for the room-temperature UV stimulated emission is of an excitonic nature and has a peak value an order of magnitude larger than that of bulk ZnO crystal. The observation of room-temperature UV lasing from the ordered, nano-sized ZnO crystals represents an important step towards the development of nanometer photoelectronics. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have found that ZnO films consisting of epitaxially ordered arrays of closely packed hexagonal microcrystallites grown on vicinal (1000) sapphire exhibit biaxial in-plane optical anisotropy. The optical anisotropy resonance occurs near the band gap energy of ZnO. The line shape of the resonance is consistent with that induced by an in-plane anisotropic strain. The direction of the anisotropy coincides with the projection of the miscut direction of the (0001) sapphire substrates onto the sample surface plane. The magnitude of the anisotropy is generally larger for films with high crystalline quality, and on substrates with larger miscut angles. A possible origin of the strain anisotropy due to the miscut angle and the difference in thermal expansion rate of sapphire along its c and a axes is proposed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Shock-wave response of cadmium sulfide powder has been examined by conducting impact experiments on cadmium sulfide/elastomer composites. Particle-velocity profiles at different sample depths were measured in experiments ranging from 7 to 45 kbar. Although no two-wave structure was observed in the wave profiles, the peak pressure-volume states and the wave-velocity results indicate a shock-induced phase transformation in the cadmium sulfide. Calculations based on a simple mixture model constructed from the hydrostatic data on cadmium sulfide and shock data on the elastomer are in good agreement with the experimental results. Reasons for the good agreement between the shock data and the hydrostatic results are attributed to the nearly hydrodynamic compression of the cadmium sulfide particles because of the elastomer matrix.

Notizen: The magnetic and structural properties of fine iron and iron-oxide particles have been studied. The samples of iron oxide were prepared by the aerosol method and those of pure iron were prepared by the vapor deposition technique. Electron micrographs showed the size of aerosol particles to be 200 nm and that of vapor deposition particles to be 10–20 nm. The maximum coercivity at 10 K obtained for aerosol particles was approximately 700 Oe, and for vapor deposited particles it was 1540 Oe.

Notizen: The response of shorted quartz gauges, 1.27 cm in diameter and 0.32-cm thick, to impact loading has been examined. Of particular interest was the increase in current with time, commonly referred to as current ramping. Data on the initial current jump from the present work and from earlier studies have been fitted using a piezoelectric current coefficient, k=(1.92+8.25×10−3σ) ×10−8 C/cm2/kbar. This fit, good to within ±2%, is valid to 40 kbar. The current ramping coefficient α was found to be linear with stress and was fitted over the same stress range as α=0.195+8.24×10−3σ, where σ is in kbar and α is in μs−1. Procedures to use the current and ramping calibration are described.
