    Notes: Abstract Niobium is used as an alloy in the industrial and biomedical fields. The concentration of the toxic element in organs of a number of animal species has been defined by using radioactive niobium (95Nb). However, tissue lesions induced by niobium have only been studied at the light microscopy level. In this study, we used an electron probe X-ray analyzer equipped with a transmission electron microscope to define the localization of this element in kidney and bone marrow cells. Results demonstrated that niobium is located in the lysosome and that this element coprecipitates with phosphate. In kidney, lysosomes and precipitates are eliminated in the tubular lumen. In contrast, precipitates appear to be eliminated more slowly from the lysosomes of bone marrow macrophages. These processes therefore correspond to one of the mechanisms by which lysosomes eliminate certain toxic mineral elements and thus play a role in the more general process of the body's defenses.

    Notes: Summary The upper and middle pons and the lower mesencephalon of the cat were explored with extracellular microelectrodes in a search for respiratory related units (RRU). The preparation used, the unanesthetized normocapnic cat, resulted in an “isolated respiratory center” by eliminating input from, as well as output to, lung and thorax. Observations were done in standard experimental conditions which allowed quantitative comparisons of anatomical structures with respect to RRU density (RRUD), RRUD to total unit density (UD) ratio, and a respiratory modulation index (RMI). Units were recorded in 22 anatomical structures; of 3614 units kept for analysis, 46.9% had a definite respiratory rhythm. The phase relations of frequency variation ere classified into five main categories: 1) tonic expiratory (E) or 2) inspiratory (I) patterns, 3) phase spanning inspiratory-expiratory (IE) or 4) expiratoryinspiratory (EI) patterns, and 5) tonic early expiratory depressed (EED) pattern. Densely packed RRU were recorded in anatomical structures known to be involved in the command of respiratory accessory musculature (trigeminal system) or thought to be part of the pneumotaxic machinery (nucleus parabrachialis median's, Kölliker-Fuse nucleus). In these structures, RRU proportion was 57–89% of the total neuronal activity. On the other hand, definite RRU (10–26%) were recorded in structures which are not thought to have a respiratory function (such as inferior colliculus or griseum centralis) where isolate RRU were scattered among non-respiratory tonic units. This group includes nuclei sometimes considered as having a pneumotaxic function. The pontine reticular formation represents an intermediate category (RRU = 35.6%) where clusters of RRU alternate with non-respiratory modulated cells. The possible role of these clusters is discussed in relation to the hypothesis of multiple coupled respiratory oscillators. Variance analysis of RRUD, RRUD to UD ratio and RMI shows highly significant differences between the three preceding categories of structures.

    Notes: Abstract The quality of national perinatal mortality statistics was evaluated from a survey in nine maternity hospitals in Hainaut, Belgium (total births: 7862). The overall completeness of perinatal death registration was 86%. Under-registration was especially frequent in low birth weight babies. In 69% of cases, the birth weight value reported on death certificates was in exact agreement with the value in hospital records. Using detailed categories of causes, there was, in 37% of cases, agreement between the underlying cause on death certificates and the main cause identified in hospital records. Using gross categories of causes, the level of agreement was 56%. Disagreement was mostly due to the lack of specificity of the underlying cause on death certificates. The authors suggest ways to improve the quality of registration.

    Notes: Abstract In comparison to skin fibroblasts from normal subjects, those from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF): (1) bound [20-3H] phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate (PDBu) with a higher affinity (Kd=25.8 vs 12.8 nM respectively) but expressed a similar number of total phorbol ester binding sites (about 2.5 pmol PDBu bound/mg of protein); (2) exhibited a faster and higher response to 4β-phorbol 12β-myristate 13α-acetate (PMA) for the stimulation of [35S]-labelled glycoconjutate release, but were equally sensitive to the synergistic effect of A23187 on this process; and (3) secreted glycoconjugates with similar [35S]-sulfate and [14C]-leucine to [14C]-glucosamine labelling ratios. Taken together, these results provide further evidence for abnormal protein kinase C (PKC) regulation of macromolecule secretion in CF disease.

    Notes: Summary Progestin, estrogen, androgen, glucocorticoid as well as mineralocorticoid receptors (PR, ER, AR, GR and MR, respectively) were all evaluated with specific synthetic radioligands (biochemical assays) in 25 meningiomas, 9 gliomas and 4 brain metastases. In meningiomas the main steroid hormone receptors appeared to be the progestin receptor, present in 24/25 cases (mean level: 7 105 fmol/ gT) and the androgen receptor, present in 23/25 cases (mean level: 2 265 fmol/ gT). Progestin receptor levels were found to be significantly lower in meningiomas of the fibroblastic subtype whereas none of the steroid hormone receptors were detected in the anaplastic case. On the other hand, glucocorticoid receptor levels were related to the preoperative glucocorticoid therapy. In gliomas only estrogen receptors (2/9 cases) and especially androgen receptors (8/9 cases) were noticeable: the latter seemed to be related to the histological types and to the sex of patients. No receptors were found in any of the four studied metastases, including one from breast cancer. The biochemical characterization of the receptors as well as their relevance to tumor biology and to the physiology of the normal tissues where tumors arise, were discussed, and biochemical data were compared with those previously reported.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a model for the penetration of fluid into a moving paper web in the application nip of a film coater. One-dimensional and two-dimensional solution methods are developed and compared. The two-dimensional model is solved using a Galerkin finite element method with a free surface algorithm. The depth of fluid penetration into the paper web increases with increase in applied pressure, paper permeability and exposure time. The fluid penetration depth decreases as the porosity or solution viscosity increases. The functional relationship among these variables depends on the profile of the pressure applied at the surface of the paper sheet. For the case of uniform paper permeability and no air compression in the web, the two-dimensional model gives similar results to the one-dimensional model.
