Notes: Abstract Measurements of the elastic small-angle scattering cross sections of silver for 60 keV electrons having been performed with silver-atom beams are communicated. The results agree with the theoretical values ofIbers andVainshtein. Comparison of the experimental results with the earlier measurements of the cross sections made with silver films shows no agreement at all. So the conjecture of several authors that the great differences between the theoretical small-angle scattering cross sections and those measured in foils are due to differences of the cross sections between isolated and condensed atoms could be verified.

Notes: Abstract The cross sections ofIbers andVainshtein are the current basis for the discussion of the small-angle scattering of electrons. As these cross sections have been calculated in the first Born approximation the limits of their validity are but roughly known. By absolute measurements of the cross sections for Ar, Kr, and Xe at 37, 60, and 100 keV between 5 and 65 mrad the range in which the Ibers and Vainshtein values are no longer valid was determined. The agreement with these values was good for Ar at all energies and for Kr at 60 and 100 keV. In the other cases deviations have been found which increase with increasing angle and atomic number and decreasing energy. Similar results have been found by measurement of the cross sections for inelastic scattering and comparison with the corresponding theoretical results ofFreeman andWatson.

Notes: Summary Regional cerebral glucose metabolism was studied in nine patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). (18F)-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) revealed general cerebral hypometabolism in all PSP patients in comparison with an age-matched reference group. When comparing the degree of regional metabolic deterioration, a consistent pattern of the most affected brain regions became obvious: the strongest significant alteration of cerebral glucose metabolism was observed in subcortical regions, e.g. in caudate nucleus, lentiform nucleus and upper mid-brain, which showed nerve cell loss in previous pathological studies. Less severe, but still significant hypometabolism was observed in frontal cortex. This pattern of hypometabolism was distinctly different from that typically seen in dementias of Alzheimer's type. The present data show that PET findings agree with histopathological studies: PSP is a primarily subcortical disease with secondary inactivation of cortical, especially of frontal brain regions.

Notes: Abstract Sorghum grain yields under the karité and the néré are reduced by an average of 50% and 70% respectively, in comparison with yields in the open field. Soil fertility, limiting primary production in the region, is at least as favorable under the tree canopies as in the open field. Reduced light intensity, to a minimum of 20% under the néré canopy, is probably largely responsible for low sorghum production under the tree canopies. Benefits from the tree products are more valuable than losses in cereal yields, explaining why trees are maintained on the agricultural fields. Pruning of tree branches, selection of (shade-) crops and tree selection could reduce crop yield losses but cannot be expected to increase tree- and crop production.
