Notes: Abstract We consider exactly and strongly consistent voting functions where the alternative set is the set of real numbers and each person's preference ordering is determined by a utility function ¦x−x*¦ wherex * is his most preferred alternative. We prove that a voting function which is continuous, anonymous, weakly Pareto, and strongly and exactly consistent must coincide with a class of generalized medians studied byMoulin [1978]. Thus, such a function is actually strategyproof. The continuity assumption can be weakened a little, but we give an example of a noncontinuous function which is strongly and exactly consistent, anonymous, and weakly Pareto, but is not strategyproof.

Notes: Abstract A formulation is given of the problem of the stability of piston-flow motion in a traveling magnetic field. It is shown that this question reduces to the problem of stability of motion in the presence of constantly acting perturbing forces. The second Lyapunov method is used as the basis to present the sufficient criteria for stability of the flow motion with respect to certain specified quantities.

Notes: Abstract Interferometric measurement of the air density in a supersonic nozzle of rectangular cross section is described. The flow structure is studied in a real Laval nozzle. It is shown that the core flow follows the laws of motion of an ideal gas and has a wave nature. The relation δZ=(3−4)δy is obtained for the boundary layer thickness on the nozzle walls for nozzle width-height ratio L/h=3.75–7.5. The flow structure in a real supersonic nozzle may differ significantly from the theoretical structure, both because of defects in nozzle fabrication and because of boundary layer growth on the nozzle walls. In many casesitis important to know the param'eters of the supersonic flow in the actual nozzle. The determination of these parameters (density ρ, pressure ρ, temperature T, velocity u, Mach number M) at any section of the nozzle in question is the objective of the present investigation.

Notes: Abstract The effect of Cr, Ni, Mo, Si and Cu on the diffusivity of hydrogen inα-iron is studied in the temperature range of 160 to 430° C at a hydrogen pressure of 1 atm. The diffusivity of hydrogen was determined by absorption rate experiments using Sievert's type apparatus. The results show that the diffusivity of hydrogen in iron alloys decreases and the activation energy increases, as the concentration of the alloying elements increases, except Cu and Ni. The trapping parameters of hydrogen in iron alloys on the basis of Oriani's approach are calculated. The results show that Si, Mo and Cr are in order of increasing trap energy and that Cu and Ni have a negligible effect on hydrogen trapping. This can be explained by taking account of both chemical affinity effects and elastic strain effects of alloying elements on hydrogen trapping.
