Notes: [Auszug] For all experiments reported here the only coincidences which were recorded were those which occurred within a predetermined time A/. Coincidences may be due to excitation of both detectors by a common source or to chance. It is customary to compute the chance (accidental) coincidence rate by ...

Notes: Abstract The spectrum of neon superradiance at λ=6143 Å is calculated with regard to the Zeemansplitting induced by the magnetic field of the excitation pulse. Good agreement was found between experimental and theoretical results.

Notes: Abstract The stability of a two-dimensional continuum consisting of rigid solids embedded in an elastic homogeneous medium with a fixed boundary is investigated. With each solid is associated the scalar $$\sigma = \frac{1}{S}\sum\limits_\alpha {\vec F_\alpha } \user1{ }.\user1{ }\overrightarrow {0M} _\alpha$$ where $$\vec F_\alpha$$ are balanced dead loads acting at points M α of the solid, and where S is the area of the surface of the solid. If μ is the shear modulus of the elastic medium, it is shown that (i) the inequality σ+4μ〉0, when it applies to each solid, is a sufficient condition for stability of the continuum; (ii) the inequality σ+4μ≧0 is a necessary condition for stability of a single circular solid embedded in an infinite elastic medium.

Notes: Abstract Some coelenterates of the class Hydrozoa and some anthozoan coelenterates from the subclass Octocorallia secrete skeletons of calcium carbonate. Skeletal carbonates of three hydrozoans and of two octocorals were analyzed for the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen. The results suggest that each of these coelenterates deposits CaCO3 in oxygen isotopic equilibrium with seawater, and that at least one octocoral, Heliopora, has skeletal carbon in apparent isotopic equilibrium with atmospheric CO2. Two of these coelenterates, Millepora and Helipora, are significant contributors to the construction of coral reefs. Whereas δ18O of these corals is temperature dependent, δ13C is not obviously related to temperature. The δ18O-temperature relationship is not significantly different from the oxygen isotope paleotemperature scale developed by Epstein et al. (1953). These findings contrast with numerous analyses of the carbonate in scleractinian coelenterates, which have long been reported to deposit CaCO3 skeletons whose carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions are not in equilibrium with the external sea-water environment.

Notes: Abstract Average radial growth rates of the hemispherical aragonite colonies deposited by the Indo-Pacific scleractinian reef coral Platygyra spp. were determined by measuring the thickness of density variations in the skeleton that are revealed by X-radiography. Ninety-one specimens from 21 localities were examined, but only 54 of these exhibited well-defined growth-banding. The apparent temperature dependence of growth rate is linear over the range 23.9° to 29.3°C, averaging 5.4±0.94 mm/year at 24°C, 8.0±0.42 mm/year at 27°C, and 9.7 ±0.58 mm/year at 29°C (90% confidence limits). Expression of the influence of temperature on growth rate in terms of the Arrhenius equation yields an activation energy of 20,680 cal/mole, which is comparable to values for typical biological reactions, but is only half that reported for skeletogenesis in another reef coral, Pocillopora damicornis, on the basis of controlled incubation studies involving 45Ca uptake.

Notes: Abstract New experiments are reported which improve our estimates of the bandwidth and energy flux of the observed radiation. These include search for coincident, sudden increases in power of newly instrumented detectors at 1661 Hertz and 1581 Hertz, at opposite ends of a 1000 kilometer baseline, and search for coincidences between outputs of detectors at 1661 Hertz and 5000 Hertz. Coincidences are observed for the detectors separated by 80 Hertz, implying a radiation bandwidth exceeding 80 Hertz. The new instrumentation is a modification of the earlier technique for bonding ferroelectric crystals to aluminium cylinders. Three detectors are fully operational with sensitivity one order better than earlier ones. Progress has been made in data retrieval employing a computer and magnetic tape. Earlier results on the coincidence rates and time delay experiments have been confirmed. A 1661 Hertz detector has been developed for operation at liquid helium temperatures. It is now undergoing tests at the Argonne National Laboratory. An experiment has been approved by NASA to employ the moon as a gravitational radiation detector. Equipment has been designed by Bendix and the University of Maryland for emplacement by the Apollo 17 astronauts.

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of imposed protection currents on the efficiency of inhibitors for cooling watersIn case where the cathodic protection of a cooling system is not feasible a combination of cathodic protection and inhibition may be of advantage. The authors have studied the potential influence of a direct current on the efficiency of an inhibitor; during the experimental work they have used a current intensity corresponding to the maximum intensity of the protection current used in practice. Using potentiokinetic methods they have found that the number of inhibitors which may be used in such conditions is rather small. In the case of inhibitors based on nitrites or amines the protecting efficiency is rather reduced after some hundred hours' operation under direct current, and in some case even a corrosion stimulation has been experienced. Inhibitors based on chromates and anticorrosion oil emulsions exhibit improved electrochemical stability, though, in the case of oils emulsion breaking must be taken into account after relatively short durations of operation.
