Notes: Thirty-one patients with myasthenia gravis were studied for their HL-A antigen expression. Eighteen patients had family members available for HL-A typing, and full genotyping for HL-A antigens was possible. The inheritance of HL-A8 was studied in detail, and it was noted that this did not correlate exactly with the development of myasthenia gravis. The multifactorial nature of the genetic component of this disease was confirmed by these studies.

Notes: Abstract Polarization curves were obtained for a range of Cr-Fe alloys, containing up to 29% chromium, in sodium chloride solutions with pH between 2 and 12. Selected surfaces were taken for examination on a scanning electron microscope. The results indicate a nearly linear relation between an ‘apparent breakdown potential’ and chromium content up to about 20% chromium whilst the same potential is independent of pH in the pH range 2–10. There is a sharp increase in this potential as the chromium content exceeds 20% and when pH is 12. The results are discussed in terms of the pitting of the passive films and the transpassive phenomenon. Evidence is adduced that the films present under conditions of electropolishing are porous and that the pitting is not necessarily associated with features in the metal surface.

Notes: Abstract Movement of 9-oxodec-2-enoic acid, a queen honeybee pheromone, from one part of a bee to another was studied using material labelled with tritium. Translocation was demonstrated, apparently partly on the surface and partly internally. Tritium exchange with tissue material caused some difficulty in precise interpretation of the results.

Notes: [Auszug] The region of low tidal energy to the west of the Isle of Man (IOM), (see Fig. 1) permits stabilisation of the water column by insolation during the early part of the summer. At the beginning of June stratification of this area is usually well established, and a rapid warming of the surface waters ...

Notes: Summary Sinusoidal 650 Hz vibrations, pulsed in a manner similar to that of the piping sound made by queen honeybees, were applied to hives containing colonies of bees. When the vibrations were applied to four hives containing very small colonies with unmated queens less than one week old, all four colonies swarmed, leaving no bees in their hives. Sixteen slightly larger colonies, also containing queens a few days old, were divided into two groups of eight. One group received vibrations and five of the colonies in it swarmed, each leaving a proportion of its bees in its hive. The other eight colonies did not receive vibrations and none of them swarmed.

Notes: Summary Electrical or flash stimulation of the visual pathway evoked in the vestibulocerebellum of barbiturate anesthetized cats, field and unitary potentials characteristic of climbing fiber (CF) activation of Purkinje cells. The latency of the CF field potentials was 11–15 msec in the flocculus and 14–19 msec in the nodulus/ventral uvula. Mossy fiber (MF) related field and unitary responses were not observed following visual stimulation. Conversely, electrical stimulation of the VIIIth nerve evoked in the vestibulocerebellum MF-related field and unitary potentials, exclusively. Despite this dichotomy, the field potentials evoked by visual and vestibular stimulation frequently overlapped within the cerebellar cortex. This overlap was shown at the level of individual Purkinje cells by means of extra- and intracellular recordings which demonstrated vestibulo-visual convergence. These observations indicate that a given sensory modality may reach specific cerebellar areas utilizing only one of the two cerebellar afferent systems. It is concluded that the MF and CF afferent systems, when considered as sensory inputs, can operate as independent information channels.
